A big surprise for the Obama girls

(CNN) - The Obama girls still don't have a puppy, but they did receive another surprise when they arrived home from school Wednesday– a brand new swing set.

A spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama says Malia and Sasha, ages 10 and 7, "squealed with delight" when they saw their surprise, playing on the swing set for almost an hour in the chilly weather.

The girls' parents arranged for the play set to be installed Wednesday at the White House grounds, within sight of the Oval Office, before Malia and Sasha arrived home from Sidwell Friends school.

As a mother and grandmother I know for a fact those two girls are too big for this silly swing set. Another think they do to pretend they are the Kennedys. What a joke, but his blind followers will eat this stuff up.

Some of you people really need to get a life. President Obama, I'm sure can afford to get his girls a swing set... They still need to be children when their whole world has been turned upside down. Stop being so negative and focus on something positive. Green doesn't seem to be your color.

Hello, we all accept they have wonderful daughters. Now, why is this in political ticker? Today, the stock market is down by another 110 points. People are more concerned about it.

A rich couple spends a few hundred bucks on their kids and people fly into a rage? Wow. Where was this outrage over the subsidies to Exxon while making record profits? Where was this outrage outrage when the no-bid contracts were given to Haliburton, the company Cheney used to CEO?

Oh, wait, It's OK If You're A Republican. I forgot.

Wow.. Sharon LV, Tony, etc.. I can't believe people are complaining about "people can't pay their mortgages, bla bla bla". The elite? LMAO. As though that is really related to this in any way whatsoever. It is a frigin swing set for gods sake! Big deal. It is not an apple-red ferrari for their 16th birthdays or something ridiculous. Come on, they have a right to a childhood and thats what Barack & Obama are trying to give them! It's simple, practical, payed for with THEIR OWN MONEY, and somply unrelated to the state of our economy. It is a matter of their personal life...

They are TEN and SEVEN, people!! You're talking about them like they're adults! Grow up. I didn't vote for Obama, against the stimulus, and a life long Republican, but you people are really dreadful.

They went without their dad while he campaigned. They didn't ASK for that. They deserve all of the good things in life, doncha think??! Never mind... all of you are bitter, jaded, miserable people.

I'm a 65 yr old grandpa and I'd like to play on that swing set.

Good for them they deserve after going through a long election process. I can't believe so many adults are critizing a 10 and 7 year old. The same ones complaing are the same ones that voted for Bush, Blame yourselves.

If you're over 50, you're obviously capable of getting yourself a puppy. Are you waiting for someone to gift you one? Obviously they are some outstanding issues that have nothing to do with the innocent Obama girls...let's act our age, yes?
I'm sure they paid for it on their own. It's a normal looking swing-set, not a jungle gym the size of a house- let's remember they're just normal people you start crying "Elite!"

Thanks this is the best piece of commentary and plain talk that I can understand. Thanks for your intelligent comments.. Some of the TV anchors, moderators and "experts" are producing an overabunce of hype and stirring the pot. Many thanks for your analysis

I'm a tried & true Republican and I say "Lighten UP!" I'm sure the Obamas paid for the swing set themselves and its a wonderful gift for their girls. The girls deserve to have the White House be a home for the next (hopefully only) 4 years.

Some of you are awful, horrible people you must live miserable, pointless lives in order to attack other people the way you do. What a sad existence you must have.

It is so funny reading these bitter responses to a simple article about the young Obamas getting a swing set. Truthfully, why are you really so bitter? Would the color of your new president have anything to do with it? LOL! Hope you clowns have a good day!

Wow! So glad we have this story in the political section, not to mention the ability to blog about the implications that the first swingset holds for this country. Who said the media can't focus on real issues?

Psychologist always says – you find what you focus on. Some see this as wasteful spending, some sick minds only can focus on which credit card paid for this swing set, but I really hope that more people share my sentiment – they are a family, with family values who want to do something for their kids.

Plus, being a marketing professional, I am willing to speculate that one of the 'cleanest' things to do as far as buying the swing set is for the selling company to give it away because of all free publicity, take the money and give it to charity... that's smart and good PR.

Let's not forget haters, that Obama is not responsible for the present day economy. If you all would reseach, this started long before Bush as well, but don't say that he should have to restrain from giving to his family because of the present day economy. Buying a swing set is not going to stop you or anyone else from going into foreclosure. Get REAL! This country has been headed this way for a long time and you can thank the greed and powers that be for that. Don't blame Obama.

GOPers complaining that taxpayer money was spent on this even tho it wasn't…in 3…2…1…

Dude, you post a lot of ill-informed, downright ignorant things....and you didn't fail this time either. Maybe the didn't pay for the $600-700 for the set, fine. Who paid for the secret service guarding the installation, who paid for vetting the installation team....etc..etc...

it's great the kids have something, but this isn't vital information for our country. We need a leader, not someone posing for GQ one minute and Family Circle the next. To date, he's averaged over $36 billion in spending, and created what, 60 jobs? You, like so many other liberals that post here are so far out of touch with the economy and world events, that you should stop posting here, stop drooling over obama-based websites, and get an education. YOU are responsible through your reckless voting, of what's happening to the country....3..2..1.. that!
