Congressional Dems have 'heated' meeting over spending bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.

Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.

The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.

One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

Here is the plan to save this country

    1. Strip out all of the earmarks (Republican and Democrat)

    2. Look for additional 5% cut in spending after all the earmarks are cut.

Any Republican or Democrat who votes for this bill as it is with the earmarks should be voted out of office. If Obama signs this bill with the earmarks, he should be kicked out of office. These politicians are living like kings on our tax dollars, wasting billions and borrowing against our children and grandchildren.

this woman has no idea of how the rest of us live; she is all for self
why Obama agrees with her and not do what is best for the
Country is just pure politics, who wins and who loses. Obama
wants to tax some of us who have made our money the hard way
and grew up in the country paid our way through college and raised
our family on hard work and not food stamps and "tax cuts" (which
he has changed the name from welfare to tax cuts; Pelosi who
jets from California every week on tax payers dollars, (no one
will talk about his ) should be addressed and taken into
consideration by her colleagues or are they afraid to talk about
this and the benefits she has done for her husband. This country
    deserves better.

It's funny how you liberals, so obsessed with "hope" and "change", so willing to preach against "the old politics", are so quick to jump to the tune of your ultra-partisan Queen Nancy and Prince Harry and blame the GOP for everything.

It's good to know Nancy Pelosi has a spine. She is always so nice, I was beginning to wonder.

With all the anger and calling Bank CEO's to the Hill to answer questions on bailout money and bonuses, has anyone asked the Congress and Senate for their very recent pay raises back? Nancy Pelosi is showng her true self that most people never have taken the time to see. Unfortunately for the rest of us, San Francisco just re-elected her.

Warthog, I don't think that you know what socialism is. Thought someone should give you a heads up so you don't continue spouting off ignorantly. Seriously, you need to do some research.

Meet the New Boss same as the Old Boss.....
Either party, when unoppossed, becomes drunk with power and Pelosi is the Democratic poster child. Unfortunatley, the entire congress has become self-serving despite claiming a desire to become bi-partisan. When will we stop worring about the special interest groups and extremists who control the electoral process and worry about the issues at hand. Obama and the democrates are going to spend us into Stagflation and they don't seem to care as long as we become "green" and everything is fair. I feel like congress is playing its fiddle while our great country is burning.

Nancy Pelosi needs to walk into a bookstore and see that the face on the cover of all the books and magazines in Obama's and not hers. Millions of people voted for him, but only a small, small, small percentage of those people voted for her, yet she's operating under the illusion that somehow she won the election. Now she wants the exact kind of presidency/administration that she was vehemently against when Bush was president.

Democrat, Republican, same thing! They're corrupt, dishonest, and in no way worthy of their positions. When are you all going to get it? We're ruled by an aristocracy that only cares about power and there's no way out unless we start voting more intelligently. Do you think they care about the direction our country is going? No! They're already on the top, and they plan to keep it that way. What do they care? Do you know why this country is falling apart so fast? We keep voting for the same people! Some of these people have been in office for decades and have nothing to show for it! Talk about maintaining the status quo. You people don't know what you're talking about, so stop wasting your time "sharing your opinions" online, because you're absolutely wrong. There's no other way to say it. As long as you continue to vote Democrat or Republican, you're just maintaining the status quo. Wake up or shut up!

Why don't you face reality, Pelosi, you do not have the brains to do your job. Step down and let a real person step up. You are a pitiful excuse for a woman. Go home and spend time with your grands if you have any. If you do not you will do moregood reading stories to the orphans in your state or open a soup kitchen and homeless center and you would gain more support. You made me sick with your so called talk with the POP regarding abortion. I do not know what your pet peeve is that you support killing unborn babies. You will stand in judgement one day. You are not getting any younger.

Warthog – Just need to set you straight on what socialism means. According to Merriam Webster's, socialism is defined as, "any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods". Hysterical rants from people such as yourself do nothing to advance the ball in this country -regardless of where you fall on the political specturm. Left wing idealogues, such as yourself, and your right-wing counterparts, who also blur the line between facts and what they would have people believe, contribute to the problems of this country. Get a grip and get yur facts straight.

Why do they need 60 votes in the Senate because when the republicans controlled the Senate 2 years ago they threatened to change the rules if the Democrats threatened to use the 60 vote rule? Another double standard for the republicans.

The Dems have replaced the Repubs, but nothing has changed. Same old partisan politics, same old attack strategy, same old 24/7/365 perpetual campaign mode.

To hell with the people, right Pelosi? How are you different than the Republicans? You're not.

Change we can believe in? I hope President Obama takes care of her, this is horrible for his plan. She is going to make the Republicans viable in 2010. This will come back to bight her and the Dems. Mark my words.

What's wasteful spending is invading Iraq and spending over 10 billion a month there as Bush did.

Exactly - Go Nancy! These spineless Republicans got us into this mess and now inspired by their fearless leader Rush Limbaugh want to blame all on the Democrats.

Hopefully we are smarter than this.

If the spending is so low in this bill and insignificant, shouldn't Democrats kill it and cash in for political capital in '10 and down the line?

Nancy this and Nancy that keeps us focused exactly on what the enemy wants us focused on. By venting our frustrations on an individual, regardless of who that individual may be, the real corruption remains in our blurred peripheral vision, insidiously disguised as democracy. The system we now call a democratic form of government has become so corrupt and self-serving that their focus is not on our country's needs, it is on their own self-preservation. They have squandered our taxes for the past several decades to place our country 10+ trillion dollars in debt, and the flood gates are now wide open, at least to the point where there will be no more waters to cause a flood. Worst than the drain of monetary resources has been the vaporization of honesty, integrity, trust, and all of the elements, which used to characterize a relic of antiquity known as a 'Statesman'.

How do you fix the corrupt system? You do not want to fix it, you want to replace it. The only mechanism that exists short of revolution is the vote. Statesmen and Stateswomen are needed in Washington, not politicians. Short of that, there is no solution, only more of the same until the whole system implodes.
