Gingrich talks openly about running in 2012

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/06/art.gingrich.gi.jpg caption="Gingrich is mulling a White House bid in 2012."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Newt Gingrich is talking out loud about a possible run for the White House in 2012.

“Calista and I will look seriously, and we'll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January 2011, and we'll look seriously at whether or not we think its necessary to do it,” Gingrich told reporters in Ashland, Virginia last night, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

“And if we think it's necessary we'll probably do it,” he said. “And if it isn’t necessary we probably won't do it.”

The former House Speaker told the New York Times magazine something similar in a profile published over the weekend.

“I think I’m closer to Benjamin Franklin than to George Washington,” Gingrich told the magazine. “I’m a contributor to my country and to my times. If it turns out that there’s a moment when it makes sense to run, then I’ll run. But if I end up never being able to run, then it won’t devastate me.”

Gingrich briefly flirted with the idea of running for president in 2007, telling supporters that if he could raise $30 million in a three-week period he would enter the race, but ultimately decided against entering the race.

Though he’s mulling a run, Gingrich said it may be time to pass the torch to younger crop of leaders. He told the Times-Dispatch that he sees the Republican Party “moving towards a whole new generation” and predicted that Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the House Minority Whip, is on the path to becoming Speaker of the House.

The Republican Party is out of power, ideas, and leadership. There is a very serious vacuum when the intellectual leader is Rush and the latest candidate for president is a washed up political hack like Gingrich.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (affair, divorce, affair, divorce) is this really what America needs? He was married and having an affair while he tried to bring down Clinton over the Monica scandal.

A very polarizing figure. He has high negatives yet also fairly high positives. He is a pretty good commmunicator and his success while Speaker of the House can't be denied.

Regardless, a good pool of candidates is what the republicans need to avoid another nominee like McCain.

...and yeah, 2012 is a long way off. Chill out with this stuff already.

Newt can forget it. He doesn't have a chance to get the Republican nomination in 2012.

Mitt Romney is the new Republican Messiah.
The Big Wigs who run the Republican party will package and sell Romney was a rock-solid, true blue conservative the same way that they packaged and sold George Bush to the American people.

During last year's Republican primaries, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, etc. were all openly shilling for Romney.
When Huckabee briefly took an early lead, they attacked Huckabee as a "Poularist" and Tax Raiser. When mcCain took the lead, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. savagely attacked him and called him a RINO and a traitor to the Party.
They will do the same thing to Gingrich.

By the time the Republican propaganda machine is finished re-creating Mitt Romney, the Ditto-Heads will think that he is the reincarnation of Richard the Lion Hearted, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Douglas MacArthur in one body.

I wonder which in his series of wives he'll be on then? Go ahead, Newt - you're so incredibly popular. Just recycle all of your old ideas and imagine that one of them will stick.

Eric Cantor speaker of the House? That means the Republicans would have to have a majority. Not going to happen anytime soon.

“I think I’m closer to Benjamin Franklin than to George Washington" In a long line of arrogant, self aggrandizing comments from Newt, this might be the apex/nadir. The certifiable scoundrel and modern architect for division politics who has had a direct hand in destroying this country comparing himself to a certifiable genius who had a direct hand in creating it.

I don't agree with all of your ideas Newt, but this Dem does respect you.

If Obama can't rangle in the Democratic party to start doing what's right for the people and not the party, I would seriously consider voting for you.
