Gingrich talks openly about running in 2012

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/06/art.gingrich.gi.jpg caption="Gingrich is mulling a White House bid in 2012."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Newt Gingrich is talking out loud about a possible run for the White House in 2012.

“Calista and I will look seriously, and we'll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January 2011, and we'll look seriously at whether or not we think its necessary to do it,” Gingrich told reporters in Ashland, Virginia last night, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

“And if we think it's necessary we'll probably do it,” he said. “And if it isn’t necessary we probably won't do it.”

The former House Speaker told the New York Times magazine something similar in a profile published over the weekend.

“I think I’m closer to Benjamin Franklin than to George Washington,” Gingrich told the magazine. “I’m a contributor to my country and to my times. If it turns out that there’s a moment when it makes sense to run, then I’ll run. But if I end up never being able to run, then it won’t devastate me.”

Gingrich briefly flirted with the idea of running for president in 2007, telling supporters that if he could raise $30 million in a three-week period he would enter the race, but ultimately decided against entering the race.

Though he’s mulling a run, Gingrich said it may be time to pass the torch to younger crop of leaders. He told the Times-Dispatch that he sees the Republican Party “moving towards a whole new generation” and predicted that Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the House Minority Whip, is on the path to becoming Speaker of the House.

old idea – send troops to war in Iraq
new idea – send troops to war in Afghanistan

old idea – give corporations money through tax breaks
new idea – give corporations money

old idea – take lobby money (green)
new idea – take PAC/bundle money (same color green)

old idea – pork barrel spending
new idea – pork barrel spending but lie about it

Newt is brilliant...... his rhetoric is a bit toned down.... But he's smart..... He's basically saying, if the economy is not back by 2011, I will find it necessary to run for Pres. If we're doing well, then I'll wait until 2016...... He wants Obama to succeed as well. His speech at CPAC, was good....... I want Obama to succeed only b/c he is good for our country, and the world......

Newt, I got news – you're no Ben Franklin. He never shut down the government, divorced his wife while she was in the midst of cancer treatments, or cheated on his second wife with an aide – at the same time he was trying to impeach the president for cheating on his wife with an aide.

On the other hand, it would be kind of fun to see Newt run as the leader of the "family values" party!

The far right wing nuts still think whites are the only people living in America. He is too old and too racist to win the White House. Hey, racist big mouth you need more than your base to win the White House 2012 and you will be too old. You Repulicans are really nuts. What country do you right wing racist nuts live in. McCain tried this in lost. Get a clue for Old nasty racist McCain. We voted loud and clear against this. First you better start working with a minority President before you can start thinking about 2012 you nut.

Newt must need some more girlfriends, he is known for affiars with all his women campaign staffers. Hey, Newt, what wife number are you on now? Have you discussed divorce actions with her yet, or does she not have cancer (that was your first wife). Please if this is the best the GOP can offer you really are in trouble!!!!

  14. Get Well Soon GOP

I thought Newt resigned in discrace in the 90's. Diddn't he mary a 22 year old intern? Why would we want him back? It shows a real void in the GOP to have to bring back. Its like the Dems bringing Carter back because he only had 1 term. Come on GOP, get well soon.

I'll pray to every known god that Gingrich runs. This really highlights the lack of any viable candidates in the Republican Party. His unfavorable ratings are so low its not even funny. The Republican Party is the modern day Whig Party.

Newt Gingrich = Racism and Hipocracy. In my opinion, he is also morally bankrupt.

    Hey Kevin in Ohio,

You may not know it but there are lots of aspects of our society that are "socialist". Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are three that come to mind quickly for most people. And while many people think we should get rid of them there are plenty of aspects that people don't think of quickly that would be terrible if they would done by private entities.

Imagine if the police and fire departments were run privately. Or if our roads were owned privately, big businesses would have to own and maintain them but could easily put small businesses out of business. And the big own is the military. Would you like that to be privately run by the highest bidder, or having multiple private militaries opperating under the free market? I sure don't.

Do yourself a favor and learn the definition of words before you spout out your opinion. Socialism does not equal communism, like the Republicans would have you think. We have lived in a mixed economy for a very long time. Making it completely capitalistic would produce some unwanted results.

Gingrich plan = W's plan. There are absolutely no difference. W carried all his wishlist for the past 8 years and it was disastrous. Please, all elephants have BIG butts and they love to use their trunks to strangle innovations. We just got rid of Daffy Duck, Darth Vader and The Sith. The force is strong, but fight back. Dont go back to the dark side of the force.

  23. Go Fogey Go

Old Fogey Newt is about as inspiring and a breath of fresh air as McCain was. Old ideas for an out of touch party; makes good sense.
He pled guilty to ethics charges, violated federal tax law and is exactly what the Rushpublicans need.

This cannot happen. One giant step forward with Obama, one million steps backwards with this creep. Hopefully America is older and wiser, but then again, we allowed W to pollute the White House for 8 years so anything is possible.

In spite of my complete disdain for Gingich, the issue of politician's politicians running our country decade after decade is one of the problems we face. I feel the same way about many of the Dems who won't just go away ... like Hillary. We need young, fresh blood to make a difference in this world.

Hope his platform is not family values, or fiscal responsibility. Someone who shut down the government because he didn't get to exit Air force one for a photo op with Clinton couldn't even begin to handle the current crisis or the aftermath. Good luck recycling the old guard, that will keep the base chanting USA, USA.
