[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/06/art.gingrich.gi.jpg caption="Gingrich is mulling a White House bid in 2012."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Newt Gingrich is talking out loud about a possible run for the White House in 2012.
“Calista and I will look seriously, and we'll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January 2011, and we'll look seriously at whether or not we think its necessary to do it,” Gingrich told reporters in Ashland, Virginia last night, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
“And if we think it's necessary we'll probably do it,” he said. “And if it isn’t necessary we probably won't do it.”
The former House Speaker told the New York Times magazine something similar in a profile published over the weekend.
“I think I’m closer to Benjamin Franklin than to George Washington,” Gingrich told the magazine. “I’m a contributor to my country and to my times. If it turns out that there’s a moment when it makes sense to run, then I’ll run. But if I end up never being able to run, then it won’t devastate me.”
Gingrich briefly flirted with the idea of running for president in 2007, telling supporters that if he could raise $30 million in a three-week period he would enter the race, but ultimately decided against entering the race.
Though he’s mulling a run, Gingrich said it may be time to pass the torch to younger crop of leaders. He told the Times-Dispatch that he sees the Republican Party “moving towards a whole new generation” and predicted that Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the House Minority Whip, is on the path to becoming Speaker of the House.
A Gingrich presidential bid would die quickly. He carries too much historacle baggage.
Our belief is that Gingrich is, politically, a very spiteful person, with a frighteningly, smilin' facade, that fiercely filters his fiendish feelings from his heart, fertile with ferocity. But, let's leave it to the people to judge. Fox news channel will have a diametrically opposite opinion.
Newt would be good, I know most Libs will hate him, hell you'd hate whoever it is no matter what so your opinions are worthless. Just remember he ran the house when your beloved Clinton balanced the budget with a republican led congress.
Be prepared for a bunch of liberals commenting on Newt that have never listened to anything he said beyond the hatcheted sound bites they heard from Oberman or Rachel Mad-cow...
Newt Gingrich looks like he's older than Mc Cain, is this a joke he's gotta be over 100 years old?
I don't agree with him on almost anything, wouldn't vote for him and think he is the biggest hypocrite in the world........but I'll agree that he is alot better at making an arguement than most on the right, has alot more actual ideas than most on the right and has a better sense of where this country is politically than most on the right.
Yawn? Another GOP leader who will be willing to represent the Wealthy, and not "We the People". Another GOP leader who will tell us one thing and do something else, continue to expand the size of the Government, and continue to enslave many generations of our citizens going forward for many generations.
He won't get my vote
I have one thing to say, Ha ha ha ha ha ha. that is funny, i never considered Newt a comedian.
Newt didn't play football because they couldn't find a helmet big enough to fit his head. His head is still too big. However, it would be interesting to see Newt vie with Palin and Jindal to see who best represents the reborn Republican party.
Before this place is completely overrun by the liberals, I just want to say that Newt is one heck of a political strategist and a great man who is searching hard for solutions to America's problems. I hope he tries to run.
newt could run on health issues like how he left his wife who had cancer for another woman. Nice guy. A real humanitarian.
As a Democrat, I hope he runs. Newt Gingrich is viewed by Democrats in the same light as the right views Al Gore (i.e., a hypocritical wonk better suited for a professorship than the Presidency). He is the Boris Yeltsin of the Republican Party: a hero that led them to a new era when the Party needed one, but unable to avoid the dustbin of history once his movement grew bigger than he was.
I love the fact that all the Repubs are getting the band from 1994 (Limbaugh, Gingrich,...) back together for the 2012 election. We've been down this conservative road before...look how badly it ended. Are the American people really going to be dumb enough to trust these guys again?
Double standard Newt, he was committing adultery at the same time he was trying convict Bill Clinton for adultery. He will represent the republicans well.
from a die hard republican. Thanks but not thanks.
Agree more of a Benjamin Franklin. Most will tell you that Thomas Jefferson really wasn't that great of a President. Smart and good at developing ideas but not a leader. WOuld be a great adviser or WH Chief of Staff. Of course anything is better than the crew running the show now. I could go to an insane asylum and get better than the lot in charge now.
One good thing the Market is up today. We need to cross our fingers and hope Obama, Biden and/or Geithner don't open their mouth.
Newt Gingrich is without a doubt the biggest egomaniac in politics. He just can't seem to get the message that he is over. I feel sorry for the GOP. This is all they have to offer, Newt and Rush...
Oh great – that's all we need, another divisive campaign full of yelling, screaming and name calling. Can't we catch a break from the vitriol and get some real options?
Hopefully the Libertarians will come out strong from the GOP implosion and we'll see a campaign that is substantive for a change.
do it Newt, we need a man in the white house....especially one with a brain.
Dear God Please and it will be another win for the Democrats. Stay home and sit the one out Newton.
Pleez!!!!
I'd vote for him over President Obama any day.
He can't be serious! If I am needed??? What would we need him for? Wasn't he thown out DC once for his conduct or am I confusing him with some other right wing hypocrite ? (Rush Limbaugh) This is just more blah blah blah to bring down President Obama's successes. Today it is Mar of 2009. Why do we all stop worrying about 2012 and rally around our leaders and try to work out solutions to our problems. Focus on what you can do today Newt. If you do nothing then you continue to be part of the problems!
That would sure make it easy for a landslide by the Democrats!
PLEASE run, Newt!
I'll vote for you.......................gladly !
