U.S. reverses policy, drops 'enemy combatant' term

WASHINGTON (CNN) - In a dramatic break with the Bush administration, the Justice Department on Friday announced it is doing away with the designation of "enemy combatant," which allowed the United States to hold suspected terrorists at length without criminal charges.

In a court filing in Washington, the Justice Department said it is developing a new standard for the government's authority to hold detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba.

I guess they are no longer our enemies then. Let them come to America, and do what they will......... or what Allah wills.

This was put in place by the Bush Ad. to undermine habius corpus!!!
Thank you Justice dept. for basically putting habius corpus back in place which has been part of our basic rights for over 900 years. Goes back to early England.

  4. there was something convienant and simple about 'enemy combatant'

    but just very very wrong

we put ourselves in a very dangerous position with respect to the world at having done that

'beacon on a hill' now is replace with holders of 'enemy combatant', water borders, invade Iraq fabricated (by Bush administration) facts, wire tap our own citizens and the list continues

we need to unwrap ourselves from the nightmare and rejoin the world

Of course the Obama administration is dropping the term "enemy combatant".... when your foreign policy becomes "We Give Up" – waive the white flag diplomacy – you no longer have any enemies.

Just "friends" who wish to harm you.

I would rather have Osama Bin Laden making US Foreign Policy than this clown. At LEAST Osama is clear about his intentions of harming the US. Obama does it quietly – in the back.

Great Obama as president can declare them innocents, wrongly jailed by the previous administartion & may als help these thugs by suing Bush administaration on behalf of the detainees. And since no other country is ready to receive these scums, obama can provide suitable employment in the white house.
I really wonder how foolish are american people & their leaders are?

The Obama will break with the Bush administration in so many ways that we will be a perfect target for the terrorists again. Time will tell.

"but on authority specifically granted by Congress."

Yeah, that's brilliant. Now every time you have an opposition congress we will get scads of released detainees. That's a great answer to national security, let the same body that safeguards us from earmarks take charge of it.

For the most part, not foolish enough to believe a thing you just said.

Stay tuned for Obamalaw. By the end of the year, a terrorist act that kills Americans will be a misdemeaner.

Let's just call them "meanies" and be done with it. They are so mis-understood. They can fly on the GV with Nancy Pelosi, work in the bank that Maxine Waters owns, or maybe buy a Senate seat like Roland Burris. They obviously won't need to pay taxes, well, because nobody else does. America truly is the land of opporutnity.

    Dear KnightJ,

I did not vote for Obama and hope he fails in his policies without taking the entire nation down with him.

Only 52% of Americans are foolish. Unfortunately that is enough to elect someone so uniquely unqualified. I am sure that if our Founding Fathers could have seen today, that we would still be part of the British Empire.

You chicken-little IDIOTS do realize that this is all FEAR and is all in your heads?

You have a better chance of being mauled by a pet chimpanzee than being killed by an angry guy with a scragly beard and a turban.

Awesome...and since E-Verify got blocked by the Democrats in both the Spendulus Package and the Omni-Earmark Bill, they don't have to worry about becoming gainfully employeed here in the Land of Free Handouts and the Home of the Stupid Liberals.

I hear there's a fabulous Airline Pilot training course that accepts transfer credits from Al Qaeda University.

    Good luck boys.

It is funny that of all places in the world America is where some human are more human than other human. Some people are entitled to constitutional protections and other human are not entitled to any legal protection. Some people are guilty until proven innocent and other innocent until proven guilty.
All other countries must comply with international law. America does not have to.

As an American, if Bush committed a crime he must pay for it, if the detainees have grounds to sue for compensation, they must rightfully do so, and if Americans place these people in their present condition where no one wants them, then they must take them.
Didn’t we treat blacks, Chinese, Native Americans, and women as less human, not long ago?

    Dear Knight,

Only 48% of you are fools. The others realize that the Taliban sold the US Military anyone they hated and said they were terrorist. Bush was dumb enought to think that the people bought were what the Taliban said they were.
