Ingraham to Meghan McCain: You’re a ‘useful idiot’

Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham are in a war of words.

Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham are in a war of words.

(CNN) –– Laura Ingraham is calling Meghan McCain a "useful idiot" and a "flavor of the month" - the latest salvo in the war of words between the conservative radio host and the daughter of former Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"Memo to Meghan McCain: Enjoy the media coverage while it lasts, but know you're being used," writes Ingraham, in a blog post titled "'USEFUL IDIOT' WATCH." "You are the flavor of the month in left-wing media land because you are a Republican bashing the GOP. Likewise, your dad is most popular among the same people when he is slamming his Republican brethren in full-blown 'maverick' fashion. At least he backs up his views with a lifetime of sacrifice and public service.

Ingraham says liberals are taking a single satirical comment out of context "to paint Meghan as the victim of a right-wing hate crime" and "malign outspoken conservatives."

The radio host mocked McCain on her show last week over comments urging Republicans to seek compromise with Democrats. She referred to McCain “a Valley Girl gone awry” and a “plus-sized model.”

Ingraham calls the furor over her remark "manufactured and totally phony."

"This comes from the same playbook responsible for the ongoing demonization of Rush Limbaugh," she writes.

"If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman's size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson's 'weight battle' during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer?" she asked, referring to a headline the president noted on a magazine cover during his interview with the NBC anchor.

Ingraham pointed to digs Rush Limbaugh has gotten over his weight, and references to herself and Ann Coulter as "peroxide blondes."

(Update: John McCain responds after the jump)

"I laughed it off. If you can't stand the heat...get out of the punditry business," she writes. "Next time, just for fun, Meghan should pretend that she's had a change of heart and is now a pro-life conservative. Then she'll really see how the Mean Girls treatment feels."

Meghan McCain has taken aim at both Ingraham and Coulter over the past week during a media blitz that's included blog posts and appearances on network television.
On The View yesterday, she said she felt like model Tyra Banks, who “went on her show in her bathing suit and said, ‘Kiss my fat ass.’”

“That’s what I feel right now,” McCain said. “I’m like, ‘Kiss my fat ass!’”

Update: In a Tuesday afternoon interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Twitter, Sen. John McCain repeated what seems to be his standard response to his daughter's string of headline-grabbing statements. "I'm proud of my daughter and she has a right to her opinions," he said, adding that "like any family we agree on some things and disagree on others."

Ingraham claims that McCain is being used as a left wing to advance their cause. Funny – you could accuse Ingraham of doing the same thing. I think she's stoking the embers in this war of words to boost her on profile. Because I certainly hadn't heard of her until now.

Look what happens to any fresh perspectives in the conservative world: Conform or be the target of the Republican spit-poison propaganda machine! Conform! Conform!

The Republican Party has acted like a bully-machine to silence conservatives like Meghan and Steele who, GASP, tell the truth.

people like Ingraham really set me off. they seek the other side, whatever it is. trying to just get their few moments of so called fame in the spotlight. in this time that we are in, trying to be of some benefit is more important.

sounds like Laura can't take what she dishes out herself. There's nothing viler than someone desperately trying to justify her own bad behavior.

Translation: toe the line or be insulted over and over and over. My goodness, this is sad. I think Meghan McCain is super foxy, and maybe Laura is a bit jealous? The problem is that she said what she said specifically to ridicule and try to belittle someone she disagrees with. I don't recall President Obama having a feud with Jessica Simpson, or calling her a plus-sized valley girl gone awry. And to say this is a manufactured argument ginned up by the liberal media is absurd. Meghan responded on her own via Twitter. Oh, but I forgot, Twitter is a tool of the liberal tech media!

oh boo hoo Laura. the only one who looks bad is YOU! oh, and Mann Coulter too. Who can't stand the heat? Your party is toast and you know it, and still you are spouting the same old drivel that got you all there. You peroxide blonde's will never learn. Time to turn out the lights and retire. Quit your nasty old whining and cat fights and do something productive for a change.

Meow! Keep it up Ingraham. Your comments just make the GOP look all the more extreme, nasty, and irrational. Nice job. Keep up the good work.

the $&!#show that is the republican party right now is so entertaining. the fact that they cannibalize the only ones who are really making rational statements (meghan mccain) make the whole thing even funnier.

people like pawlenty of minneapolis are the only ones who offer real hope and they are constantly pushed to the bottom of the barrel. i can't say that i agree with all of pawlenty's positions, but i respect him as a moderate rational thinker who is able to engage in thoughtful dialogue. i'm so glad the republicans don't rally behind him because if they did, they might have a chance to take back the whitehouse in 2016.

Megan will go the way of Stephanie Miller(father was VP with Goldwater), Ron Reagan, Julie Nixon Eisenhower!!!! Megan is progressive. She graduated from Columbia University where President Obama got his first degree in Foreign Affairs and Finnace(graduated Magnum Cum Laudi). She's a smart girl and can not be controlled by the radical right wing!!!

Ingraham is entirely too old to be carrying on like this. She looks like she's picking on a young lady who didn't really ask for her input. Besides, McCain is right. Women like her and Coulter do give the GOP party an even worse name than it already has.

I think Meghan McCain is a bright young woman with an incredible future. She says what's on her mind, and doesn't wait for "approval" before she can defend herself. Hopefully, we have more people like Meg who are to become part of either political party to move this country in the direction it needs to go. Plus, she's pretty sexy.

Typical of the far right wing...."either completely agree with us, or shut up!"
...and they wonder why people don't like them.

Unfortunately for them this is America. Meghan McCain has a right to her opinion and she has a right to voice that opinion.

But wait....aren't the conservatives the so-called "GATE KEEPERS" of what it means to be a true American? So why are they getting so upset with Meghan exercising her rights?

    I don't get these people.
