Ingraham to Meghan McCain: You’re a ‘useful idiot’

Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham are in a war of words.

Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham are in a war of words.

(CNN) –– Laura Ingraham is calling Meghan McCain a "useful idiot" and a "flavor of the month" - the latest salvo in the war of words between the conservative radio host and the daughter of former Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"Memo to Meghan McCain: Enjoy the media coverage while it lasts, but know you're being used," writes Ingraham, in a blog post titled "'USEFUL IDIOT' WATCH." "You are the flavor of the month in left-wing media land because you are a Republican bashing the GOP. Likewise, your dad is most popular among the same people when he is slamming his Republican brethren in full-blown 'maverick' fashion. At least he backs up his views with a lifetime of sacrifice and public service.

Ingraham says liberals are taking a single satirical comment out of context "to paint Meghan as the victim of a right-wing hate crime" and "malign outspoken conservatives."

The radio host mocked McCain on her show last week over comments urging Republicans to seek compromise with Democrats. She referred to McCain “a Valley Girl gone awry” and a “plus-sized model.”

Ingraham calls the furor over her remark "manufactured and totally phony."

"This comes from the same playbook responsible for the ongoing demonization of Rush Limbaugh," she writes.

"If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman's size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson's 'weight battle' during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer?" she asked, referring to a headline the president noted on a magazine cover during his interview with the NBC anchor.

Ingraham pointed to digs Rush Limbaugh has gotten over his weight, and references to herself and Ann Coulter as "peroxide blondes."

(Update: John McCain responds after the jump)

"I laughed it off. If you can't stand the heat...get out of the punditry business," she writes. "Next time, just for fun, Meghan should pretend that she's had a change of heart and is now a pro-life conservative. Then she'll really see how the Mean Girls treatment feels."

Meghan McCain has taken aim at both Ingraham and Coulter over the past week during a media blitz that's included blog posts and appearances on network television.
On The View yesterday, she said she felt like model Tyra Banks, who “went on her show in her bathing suit and said, ‘Kiss my fat ass.’”

“That’s what I feel right now,” McCain said. “I’m like, ‘Kiss my fat ass!’”

Update: In a Tuesday afternoon interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Twitter, Sen. John McCain repeated what seems to be his standard response to his daughter's string of headline-grabbing statements. "I'm proud of my daughter and she has a right to her opinions," he said, adding that "like any family we agree on some things and disagree on others."

Angerham and Coultergeist are complete idiots. Republicans are digging their own hole....Meghan you have a mind of your own and don't let these old losers get away with this. John and Cindy McCain needs to stand up and slam ignorant hateful people. (Not that Meghan cannot take care of herself).

As opposed to Ingraham, who is just an idiot.

Ingraham is why the Republican party is dissolving before our eyes. She and her kind need to slink back to the American Independent Party so the Republicans can go back to being an honest and decent group of people out to serve America, instead of what they've become–an irrelevant and extremist group of obstructionist nobodies.

The Republican party (which I belong to) has become nothing more that a comedy relief channel!!! If McCain dgt, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingram, and Rush Limbaugh think they represent middle republican America, they are in a sorry state!!!!!! All they do is bash, ridicule, and the like of everyone from democrat on. There are sooooo many serious problems the mainstreet America is facing, and they JUST DON"T GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get over yourselves and work to improve this country, not condemn everyone! PLEASE!!!

There *was* a furor over Obama's comment about Jessica Simpson, but it calmed down once everyone realized he was paraphrasing a tabloid headline in order to mock said tabloid; he wasn't attempting to belittle her. Ingraham is just envious of Meghan McCain's youth, beauty, and charm.

As the country moves slowly from the right towards the center, Laura is having another one of her intolerant temper-tantrums. Her need to make dehumanizing comments about Megan McCain who is using logic and common-sense to move this country forward, lets the rest of the county know that Laura Ingraham is out of touch. Meghan McCain is becoming relevant and Laura Ingraham is becoming irrelevant.

I'd rather listen to a flavor-of-the-month useful idiot fight back than listen to someone that I've previously never heard of say anything.

Hey Laura, isn't it nice to know you and the typical middle-school bully have something in common? I'd love to know just what did you mean by calling Meghan "a Valley Girl gone awry" and a "plus-size model", and how exactly was that taken out of context. Just own up to the fact that you and your Republican thug friends are on the way out and are becoming increasingly out of touch with the direction in which the country is traveling.

There's an excellent line in here that shows just how much the right wing doesn't get it: "You are the flavor of the month in left-wing media land because you are a Republican bashing the GOP." It isn't because she's a Republican bashing the GOP, it's because she's a Republican that isn't caving in to extremism. She speaks her mind. She's open to discussion. I know these are foreign concepts to the right, but freedom doesn't mean everybody thinking the same way you do.

And this is why the Republican party is failing. They have a chance at being cool, going mainstream, identifying with a lost group, and their conservatism/bitterness/insecurity doesn't allow it. Oh well.

Can we stop this incessant picking, poking, and name calling. This is just getting pathetic and tiresome. All involved have lost credibility as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously? She is going to use Rush Limbaugh to defend her comments? I don't care if they are Republican or Democrat, they are women first, and this kind of slander from one woman to another is ridiculous. From one woman to another, the only reason to make a comment like that about another woman's weight is to hurt her personally. When Laura goes there, this isn't a fight about politics anymore, this is a personal attack meant to hurt. Which is fine, but then don't call yourself a political pundit. Sounds like someone is a little angry that Megan is getting more attention her. Wow, how old are you, 12?

"Enjoy the media coverage while it lasts, but know you're being used"
    – These words could just as equally be applied to Laura.
This policy of personally attacking anyone who disagrees is not a good policy for a democracy – let's focus on the issues!

All the infighting amongst Republicans isn't good for the party but is probably good for the country. If Coulter is really for freedom of speech, why attack Meghan McCain for saying what she believes? Why is it that conservatives are all for freedom until someone uses it in a slightly different manner than the way conservatives decided is the only correct way.

If Meghan McCain wants Republicans and Democrats to work together then I think she is a true American who loves her country.

Laura is just being a typical Republican. Republicans like to preach about taking personal responsibility but when it comes time to do so, they attack. Sure Laura could have said "I am sorry, my comments about Megan McCain's weight were inappropriate". But instead she attacks and spins. It is their way – say one things and do another. The GOP is becoming synonymous with hypocrite.

I love Meghan McCain! I have been a Republican for my entire life or at least until 8 years ago. The party I believed in has turned their backs on the platform issues that had drawn me in such as fiscal responsibility and civil liberties instead determined to use fear tactics to hold control.

Heaven forbid that someone actual say we should work together instead of standing at this eternal stale mate. Compromise means giving a little and when no one gives anything nothing happens. I'm tired of nothing happening and if that means taking a chance on Obama then I will and did.

Meghan is a fresh face for the party that needs to get back to common sense roots or continue on it's path to a fringe party, out of touch with the majority. The fact that these talk show pundits use a middle school come back of calling her fat just shows exactly where they draw their popularity from and it is fading away.

Is this woman serious?? She talks like a ten year old who is fighting on the playground?? If you act and talk like a moron then the morons will follow... no surprise that this woman likens herself with Ann Coulter who also thrives on ratings from her hate rants.

It is a sad story where two otherwise intellegent women are calling each other names. The only thing I or anyone else will remember from this story are the gender biased name calling. Is this the best these two women have to offer? A cat fight? Really sad. I hope they both read this and take a step back and look at themselves and their disgraceful actions.

The best part is that Laura Ingraham doesn't seem to realize that she, in fact, is the "useful idiot" here. Every time she spews this divisive hate speech, all the liberals have to do is quote her and it turns off Americans who want solutions instead of invective.
