Palin spokeswoman attacks Levi Johnston's 'lies'

(CNN) - A Palin family spokeswoman Monday is continuing to push back against recent claims from Levi Johnston, saying the former fiancé of Bristol Palin told an outright "lie" when he said the two were allowed to live together.

"Levi has never lived under the same roof as Bristol or any of the Palins," Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton told CNN.

In an interview that aired in full Monday on the Tyra Banks Show, Johnston said he moved in to the Palin household shortly before the birth of son Tripp last December.

"I just wanted to be there for her when she had the baby," Johnston said, adding the two were allowed to share a room.

"Do you really think the governor and Todd would have allowed that," Stapleton said in an e-mail.

In a statement released late last Friday, Stapelton was also sharply critical of Johnston for appearing on the show.

"We're disappointed that Levi and his family, in a quest for fame, attention, and fortune, are engaging in flat-out lies, gross exaggeration, and even distortion of their relationship," Stapleton said. "It is unfortunate that Levi finds it more appealing to exploit his previous relationship with Bristol than to contribute to the well-being of the child."

But in the interview with Tyra Banks, Johnston said was driven to "break his silence" after reading several news reports that were "not true."

"I have seen a lot of stuff, read a lot of things in the newspapers and news and it's time we get our story out there," he said. "I have seen a lot of stuff saying I've done steroids and drugs and cheated on Bristol and that kind of thing, and it's not true."

Johnston also described a currently chilly relationship with the Palins, saying the Alaska governor "doesn't want me around, I don't think." Johnston, and his mother Sherry, said they may go to court in an effort to be granted 50 percent custody of the child.

Johnston and Bristol Palin were thrust into the spotlight last September when Sarah Palin was chosen to be the Republican vice presidential candidate. During the GOP's national convention in Minneapolis, Palin revealed that Bristol, then 17 years old, was pregnant with Johnston's baby and the two had plans to marry.

The Alaska governor later indicated the wedding would occur this summer. But news surfaced last month the two had split.

I dont think Levi has anything to lie about. On the other hand Palin has her dubious reputation to keep untarnished if that is possible.

What else is new with this dysfunctional family? Whether they are religious conservatives or not, their daughter and her boyfriend had a baby out of wedlock like so many others have. They have split up like so many others have. Levi is cashing in on his 15 minutes of fame like so many others have. And the mother and baby are supported by girl's parents like so many others are! So how has all that religion and conservative upraising made any difference? It hasn't like it hasn't in so many others.

And this surprises you why? I think we knew it was all about the campaign and a reputation. To tell people they had planned to get married after they graduated anyway was ludicrous. The Palins knew better. This shows what was really happening and it looked forged anyway.

Oh Sarah, Sarah, Sarah... I thought you were all Mrs. Morals and all. Isn't it enough that you publicly condoned your teenage daughter’s behavior while under your watchful eye… obviously the abstinence only agenda isn’t working too well in your household maybe next time you should consider preaching about safe sex… You then top it off by allowing the teenage father of the baby to move into the governor’s mansion. Did he reap the benefits of the Alaska tax payer dollar too? You exploited Levi and Bristol from day one... now its time for you to deal with the backlash... hopefully Levi has some more ammo against you and your "perfect" family.

the whole situation is loaded with lies and politics. how awful for everyone involved.

This is a shame. Another child caught between dueling parents/in-laws. They all should think of the best interests of the child, i.e., a two parent family where everyone gets along or at least pretend to like each other.

Sarah Palin needs to be there for her children and stop running around thinking she will be the next President!! Obviously her children need her at home more. She chose to have children so be their mother!! Also, this kid is out for his 15 minutes!!

I, for one, am proud of Sarah Palin for so aptly being concerned about the words and implications by Levi Johnston and how he may skew her sense of decency. It's good to see this is taking a high priority with her, apparently ahead of economic meltdown, unemployment and US wars being waged in two countries. The American people need more of this and less relevant news if we are to focus on “Palin for President in 2012.”

You go, girl! And take your "aw shucks, gee whiz and you betcha" mentality with you.

No matter what your political views are, it's always sad when a parent opts for the spot light instead of the welfare of their child. What's next for this guy? Maury Povich?

Meg Staplegun should really consult with her boss before she puts out statements on her behalf. Does she KNOW that Levi lied? I'd believe Levi over SP anyday.

Perhaps if Bristol Palin and her mom hadn't done an interview with Greta Van Susteran, Levi wouldn't have felt compelled to respond with his own TV interview. This round of TV appearances started with the Palins.

Wait, so he's not allowed to live with her? Why? Would that be inappropriate since they aren't married? What's the point, you can't lose your virginity or get pregnant twice!

Talk about closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

Palin has been piping up lately in her own defense. Good! The way the media has been bashing her reminds me of when Ronald Reagan was a viable presidential contender back in the 1970's. It looks like Levi Johnston got sucked up into the smear campaign. The reason for their breakup: he needs to become more mature. You betcha!

Disappointed in Levi's quest for fame? Is this the same Governor Palin that paraded both Levi and her daughter onstage at the convention? Is this the same Governor Palin whose daughter just did an interview on fox news? So, when her daughter gives interviews, she is telling her story, yet when levi tells his story it is a quest for fame. Wow, pretty large double standard there governor.

I don't blame Levi or Bristol for this situation. I believe Levi when he says Sarah Palin knew. Just like she knew Bristol was pregnant and she knew she was under investigation and she knew she did not have what it takes to be a VP, yet none of that mattered to her. She freely chose to bring her children in the spotlight with her and now Bristol has become part of the media frenzy. A lot of women have to scale back until they raise their children, she should have done the same. Fame will go to your head, if you are not careful. The best thing Sarah Palin can do for her family at this point is be governor and a mother. One thing I will say in her defense if I hope she does not allow the republican party to pimp her out, using her for fundraising and to do their dirty work with no intention of giving her a real shot within the party. She deserves better than that and so does her family.

I knew it was just a matter of time before the boyfriend became the new target of the Palin Attack Machine. This is the only strategy that this lady knows that could guarantee her a continuous spotlight until 2012… say things that create controversies, and always play victim!!

This is pretty sad. What makes it more un-believeable is Levi's past myspace blogs. If you want out of the public, stop trying to jump in front of it. Don't let the fact that you had a child with the former candidates daughter be your one claim to fame. Trying doing something that makes a difference. Airing your dirty laundry just makes you appear like a pathetic. Work you issues out with the babys mother, not with America.

What a joke Palin is. Now she is in a name-calling contest with a teenager (and losing!!). She can't even run her amoral household, even with the help of her husband. How in the world does she think she can run this country.?

I do not know who to believe, The Palins or The Johnstons. Both are dysfuntional. I do not know what Bristol was thinking when she dated Levi. Did Sarah Palin tell her daughter, when you lie with dogs, you get fleas?

Maybe both parties are seeking the limelight? Seems like something best worked out in private.

Bristol Palin already came out and said that abstinence was not realistic. Bristol by having a baby now makes her an adult and should no longer have anyone speaking out on her behalf.

The Palin spokesperson smacks of not being credible and trying to put spin on the situation. Mother Palin needs to come to terms with her daughters situation and let her make her own way.

Gov Palin should busy herself with Alaska's needs and stop this sillyness.

Sad situation but has no bearing on whether or not Sarah Palin is qualified for office. If you think it does, let's dredge up accounts of all the other politician's children, siblings, brothers, sisters. We could start with Obama's relatives.

Stapleton finds it ". . .unfortunate that Levi finds it more appealing to exploit his previous relationship with Bristol . . ."? And Sara Palin was not exploiting that "relationship" during her VP campaign?
The only thing newsworthy about intruding into the private lives of these teenagers is the hypocracy of moralistic preaching politicians who rarely live up to their own preaching.
