Shirtless Obama to appear on magazine cover

A shirtless Obama is on the cover of Washingtonian Magazine.

A shirtless Obama is on the cover of Washingtonian Magazine.

(CNN) - It's not every day a President of the United States lands shirtless on a magazine cover.

But the May issue of Washingtonian Magazine, to hit newsstands Wednesday, is causing a bit of a sizzle inside the beltway. President Obama graces the cover, shirtless, in an issue that focuses on "26 Reasons to Love Living Here."

The number two reason: "Our new neighbor is hot."

The particular photo choice, taken while Obama was vacationing in Hawaii over Christmas last year, is certainly an unconventional pick to showcase the commander-in-chief.

But Garrett Gaffe, editor-at-large for the magazine, told CNN the picture is appropriate because, "our feeling was that this wasn't an ordinary presidency."

"The Obamas, through their involvement in Washington, are helping to showcase just how exciting it is to be in Washington right now" he said. "We use the word 'hot' tongue in cheek with the photo."

"He is a buff president that the paparazzi enjoy taking photos of," said Gaffe.

Contacted by CNN, the White House declined to comment on the magazine's cover.

GAG!!! This is so inappropriate. He's the President, How about a litle class for the office! He needs to go away, find him a beach somewhere and stop making the USA the laughing stock of the world. This is not leadership. He's a joke!!

    hey kathy,

first, he didn't pose for this – it's an old photo from a vacation with his family.

second, pres. obama is garnering back the respect of the world that bush lost with his "cowboy diplomacy."

    jealous much?? just askin'.

How ludicrous to blame Obama for this. It says quite clearly that this picture was taken while he was vacationing in Hawaii so unless you're illiterate, I don't know what the problem is. Do you expect him to swim in a burqa?? It's the magazine that should have had better judgement.

Yeah right. Like the White House wasn't involved in getting this picture on the front cover. Don't kid yourselves. The White House loves this.

Its SO funny, when right wing NUTS go out on their little tea party waste of times, and carry signs with pictures of the President with horns, and call him the devil, THATS ok, but when a magazine puts him on vacation on the cover its ANTI AMERICAN, its degrading the Presidents office. Give me a break losers! Obama does NOT control the press, if he had tried to stop this you loons would have had another waste of time party about freedom of the press. Go back under your rocks!!!!

I think it's so funny how people are trying to make this about him intentionally posing for this magazine cover like a real celebrity photo shoot or something. The picute was taken while on vacation by the papparazi months ago, when the photo was released it was every where. The President doesn't have exclusive rights to the picture you know with the freedoms we have the papparrazi take pictures of celebrities all the time do you think that the celebrity in turn sells the picture that's not how it works and people know that. If it was, you would not see very many celebrity pictures on these blogs, and magazines. I'm all for people being against this President that's fine but your crticism holds no weight when your being against him for whatevea reason pops to mind. I just hope that people will start to be honest.

There is NOTHING wrong with the President being on the cover of The Washingtonian with his shirt off. Did the photographer get permission to use the photo?

Just get over it folk ... he is still OUR president! Some have done worse!

This is not appropriate. Its not like he posed for the photo. There are so many other photos of him that are really "hot." This mag is irresponsible and juvenile for putting this on the cover.

To comment on Kathy's post below:
Obama has no control over a magazine company chosing this cover, so your comments are stupid. Get off of the Haterade.

    @ Bill in California

Are you serious? Obama is the most powerful man on the planet right now as POTUS...what would he have to fear politically from a German-born non-native? And yes, if you respond by questioning Obama's birth certificate we will absolutely consider you crazy.

Why are there so many idiots blaming this cover shot on Obama?

Hey, he went on vacation and some paparazzi shot his photo and some rag put it on the cover.

    Get a life!!!!!!

Go back to Political Ticker last week and look at CNN trying to portray Congressmen Schock shirtless with a negative editorial slant and this Obama shirtless report with a positive editorial slant. Also look at the comments they moderated in both reports. CNN is not following it's No Bias No Bull Policy.

Just further if not final confirmation that we live in a celebrity obsessed culture and that obama is complicit in this grotesque charade of "playing president". This only adds to the utter lack of decorum and complete pretension being modeled by Obama. "He's hot"...sounds like a bunch of high school kids. Unfortunately, high school kids with power and money now. DC's horrible inferiority complex is showing.

I think the whitehouse needs a mother with good morals. The Pres. and his wife are lowering the standards ...I've often said, "you can polish someone up, but some how the (roots) always make a come back." I'm a grandmother; rather a young "thinking" grandmom, but I don't want my grandchildren to be misguided by a couple who, to me, are exploiting the stature of our great country and the awesome title they carry. They don't need to lower the standards to make people feel comfortable; just the opposite; they need to be proud of their heritage, and show dignity, and honor to the black people; and to all races. They shouldn't have to resort to lowering the standards of the whitehouse to people of all stature to believe, they too can become a leader", but stand tall, and proud..Get your clothes on whitehouse. And hire someone who can teach you both good manners....

What a hunk! What a rock star! Hubba hubba!

This is the ultimate photographic portrayal of our President. Maybe his official portrait in the National Portrait Gallery will be just Barack and his boxers!

He is a humain also. If it's a hot day at the beach, well people tend to wear swimsuits. For god sakes, let the man live and enjoy a day at the beach without being judge by all you ignorants.

Obama needs to get rid of the office in the White House that handles this, trying to make him into a movie/rock star. He is suppose to be the President.
