White House responds to rise in swine flu

(CNN) - In response to the growing number of swine flu cases in Mexico and the United States, White House spokesman Reid Cherlin said Saturday that the administration is taking the situation "seriously and monitoring for any developments."

A White House official says Obama has had no flu-like symptoms since his trip to Mexico in mid-April, and says there are no concerns about the president’s health.

On Saturday, the World Health Organization called "a public health emergency of international concern."

The most recent reports Saturday afternoon were of two confirmed cases of the virus in Kansas. Those joined eight confirmed cases in Texas and California and an apparent outbreak at a private school in New York City, where officials say eight children likely have the virus.

The WHO's Gregory Hartl said the strain of the virus seen in Mexico - which may have killed as many as 68 people there, according to that nation's health agency - is worrisome because it has mutated from older strains.

  1. Why hasn't Obama ordered a vaccine....

to be made for the swine flu. It's just another case of his waffling and ineffective leadership. 80 people have died already in Mexico and we need to move on this.

A pandemic may not only kill 20 million people like the last one but will devastate an already sinking economy.

Let's see some leadership from Obama instead of playing with the dogs and glad handing the likes of Chavez.

Swine flue AGAIN? What about Bird Flu? What about illness in general? And NO ONE wants to have universal health care? No one wants to make it a nation of healthy people who can get the medical care then need.... and consequently the government will have the funds to do research for such illnesses that come out of no where (so-called)! People... wake up....look at universal health care in Sweden! Do those people fight all these flues? I never hear of it... can't we see a connection there? Please people... stop looking just this side of your noses and start thinking for yourselves. Research, find your answers! Stop being led over the nearest cliff by smooth talking snake oil salesmen!

Ok, notice that the video says "Swine flu SCARE"...because thats exactly what this is, a scare. A report I saw this morning said 900 people in Mexico have been diagnosed with this flu...if that is correct, with only 68 dead, you're looking at a 13% mortality rate or so. Sorry, but at this point, that is not enough to cause a panic like they're trying to. Give me Huanta with a 50% mortality rate, or Ebola which can be as high as 90%...then I'll start to worry. I'd also keep in mind that Mexico probably doesn't have the kind of medical fascilities as the United States, which can also have a huge impact on fatalities.

Never so many threatening health issues.Salmonella ,AIDS,resurgence of TB,etc. Something to ponder:could the influx of immigrants (legal & illegal )whose relationship to hand washing & general cleanliness be a factor ??
Many of them are from countries where regular handwashing is seen as a waste of water .Look at the workers in our restaurants & food plants .....

We should subcontract control of this problem to China. They took control of the SARS problem and maintained their citizens safety. Our folks suggest you wash your hands.

Perhaps China does deserve to be the new world leader...BHO and his cast of fools sure don't.

I bet Sarah Palin is already trying to think of a way to make "swine flu" sound like some sort of insult to Republican women.

there can be no doubt that in about a week we will learn that the obama is receiving some hind of world medal for singlehandedly cuering those eight people of the swine flu most likely spread around by formef President Bush and Former VP Dick Cheney.

What are we really to do? Even if we closed our borders, people still get in and out of here one way or another. It should not escape anyone how serious it is for a city as large as Mexico City to close all schools and universities. Imagine if our city did that? We have to get real. We need to start innoculating or slaughtering pigs and making human vaccines asap. I expect Obama has already begun preparing.

We shouldn't worry to much about swine flu unless we happen to be Republicans. They are much more susceptible to the disease because of they share so much in common genetically. A pig flu epidemic might be very helpful to America nowadays.

If they are taking this situation "seriously" then why haven't they closed the boarders. And all you liberals that think that's the wrong thing to do I have a suggestion. We'll send all the infected illegals up to your liberal states starting with Janeane Garofalo! You take care of them and worry about getting sick. I am so sick and tired of this crap!

My 5 month old son has swine flu symptoms and I'm at a hospital in Texas and we have been here for 6 hours and have not seen a doctor yet. My son has a temp of 103. I'm on CNN mobile. Maybe Texas isn't taking this seriously!
