Obama, Biden honor top cops

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Obama promised $2 billion in additional funding to help police officers keep their jobs at a ceremony honoring some of the nation's top cops in the Rose Garden on Tuesday.

Obama presented an award from the National Association of Police Organizations to a number of top cops from around the country who he said have "literally walked through fire" to help their communities.

"You've reacted quickly in crises to protect the innocent," Obama said. "You've reacted with compassion for those that were in need and you've literally walked through the fire to help your neighbors escape disaster. Now, that's what police officers do. You step into harm's way to form, officer by officer, block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, the line between safety and violence, calm and chaos, home and despair."

The president said $2 billion in additional grants will be made available to help make progress towards his goal of boosting the number of police officers nationwide by 50,000. He called Vice President Joe Biden "the sheriff" and said he would make sure the money is spent as intended.

"The president and I recognize the bravery you display simply by putting on that badge every day," Biden said. "The officers honored here today have been singled out for going above and beyond the call of duty. And we commend you all."

Darn socialists... using our tax money to pay police officers. I say down with socialism! If we want police protection, it should be free enterprise.. we should just pay to hire our own police protection!

Ok.. for those that don't recognize that.. it's called sarcasm 🙂 though I'm sure someone will write something either close to what I've written, or just a general statement about Obama's spending driving us into the ground... even though it's less than what we spent in the last administration.

Let's hear the Republicans say something negative to this story now.
Let's hear how the President doesn't really care about Police Officers and that this story is only a publicity stunt. Some how, some way, they will try to bring bitterness and hatred to the President being Presidential. Oh, another comment will probably be "Why is he spending time honoring Police Officers when he should be at work in the White House".

These guys (police) deserve better than we give them most of the time. They keep our streets safe and truly "serve and protect".
They deserve the praise and any help the government can send their way.

Are you republicans upset our tax dollars are being spent for this useless cause. The dems have gone too far now, honoring such a group of meeting will no doubt make us less safe!

    Good job Obama/Biden!

We are finally starting to 'value' those men and women who are responsible for what really matters in our society. President Obama's focus on teachers and police officers are just two examples of support for our renewed success as a nation.

IT'S TRUE!!! OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST!!! Look at him supporting the socialist police departments across America. (that's right folks, the police department is a socialist program)

    🙂 More sarcasm

I know that there will be someone to say something negative and it's fun to try and guess what the naysayers will say

Republicans wont call this socialism, because they think we SHOULD spend money on this. They ONLY call it socialism when its something they dont agree with. Obama is an AWESOME president. I love all the things he does.

Let's hear the Republicans say something negative to this story now.
Since you asked the Federal Government should not be funding the Police this is a state funded program AND SHOULD BE FUNDED BY THE STATES. Why is the fed getting involved here? Political advantage Obama is in bed with Unions.

These Officers are the best and they do deserve more but there is the correct way to funding them.

Good move! Not only are their lives on the line but they have to tread with extreme caution when faced with sensitive issues. Even though law enforcement is their main task, they must wear many hats. Highly compensating them gives them as sense of gratification and helps with motivation.

Well that proves it! President Obama is a socialist because he supports the police who are supported by the government and that is definitely a socialistic function. You rethuglikkans were right all along.

Well it did not take the naysayers long to start fuming. Capt. Sully's ego would certainly take a blow after reading Marc in Virginia's blog.
We New Yorkers are very pleased that over one hundred lives did not go down in the Hudson River because of this pilot's amazing stunt. Some people are so devoid of love that it spills out into their blogs.

I am torn between who are our greatest heroes, our gallant military or our intrepid law enforcement officers. Both groups protect and defend us daily againt our enemies yet law enforcement protect us from ourselves. Perhaps bravery cannot be measured by mere mortals!!!

The police are funded though state funds. This is just a political stunt the Feds have no bussiness getting involved here.
