CNN Poll: Pelosi facing Gingrich-like approval ratings

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said last week that she was misled by the CIA about the use of enhanced interrogation techniques."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - As Nancy Pelosi continues to face a firestorm over what she may have known about aggressive government interrogation techniques, and when, a new survey has more unpleasant news for the House Speaker.

Nearly half of all Americans - 48 percent - disapprove of how the California Democrat she is handling her job as Speaker of the House in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Monday, while 39 percent approve of her performance.

That rating makes her less popular than other members of her party - congressional Democrats drew a 51 percent approval rating in last month's CNN/ORC survey - and roughly in line with the congressional GOP, which drew positive ratings in April from just 39 percent of those polled.

That puts her approval rating at roughly the levels Newt Gingrich had in his first year as Speaker of the House. (Back in 1995, Gingrich's approval rating was 37 percent; by 1997 - at the same point in his speakership that Pelosi is now - that had dropped to just 25 percent.)

The telephone poll of 1,010 Americans was conducted May 14-17, and has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I'm against torture, and I'm against Pelosi. I do think she might truly be ignorant, and not lying. She is a drama queen and way to left for my likings.

The right wing lunatics can have a feeding frenzy with her as far as I'm concerned. The only thing that saves any face, is that she isn't HALF as bad as 90% of the republicans, and at worse, she's twice as good as the very worst of the republicans. But she really sucks, and is by far the most useless of all the republicans. Now do the math!

Well I dont care what the polls say, she may have known about the use of torture and she may have lied, but Im going to keep saying the same thing, they need to hold the right people responsible that is George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. This administration was doing what they wanted to the whole 8yrs they were in office, need I remind you about going to war, weapons of mass destruction, the illegal tapping of public phone lines. She may have known about torture and she may not have told the truth but why is she to blame? Remember Newt Gingrich left the Speaker of The House post in disgrace, so Republicans and I mean all Republicans leave Nancy alone and hold the right people responsible that is George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and the whole administration, there the ones who allowed the use of torture and there the ones who got this country in the mess we're in now, and thats not only my opinion

    "Huckabee writes poem attacking Pelosi"

Bush lied to the American People, For his greed for Oil; Intelligence reports were fabricated, For misleading the American People…..

While the US troops were dying, Cheney was shooting people; The economy went shambles, Due to the cost of war……

Bush and Cheney are still out there lose, they need to be in Jail; Republicans have done Nothing in the last 8 years, Still they don’t shut their mouths…….

Bush is a criminal, Responsible for the unjustified war; Republicans are stupid, and their leader Rush Limbaugh is an Idiot…….

Republicans hate Pelosi, because she is going to put the Criminals in Jail; We support Pelosi, because she is not a crook like the Republicans…….

Sounds to me like "Nancy Pants" approval rating is headed down the slippery slope to nowhere faster than a skunk trying to outrun it's own aroma.

Maybe she should try listening to folks instead of being the ultimate dictator and trying to impose her will on everyone else. She might just accidentally accomplish something good for the country.

People need to stop falling for these shell games. What she knew or didn't know isn't nearly as important as what people DID.

By the standards that the Republicans are using, President Bush should be brought to trial for lying to the people; Rumsfeld should be jailed, and so should Cheney.

And, isn't it ironic that Newt – the serial adulterer and liar – should be the one making the most noise?

So if Pelosi gets kicked out of the government, she can spend the rest of her days shooting off her mouth about things she knows nothing about, like Gingrich.

Nancy Pelosi preemptively took impeachment off the table. Her responses to questions concerning impeachment were always unconvincing as to why she would keep it off the table. Was she afraid that a trial might find her guilty of inaction or worse in connection with the President's "alleged" offenses?

Her responses to questions concerning her knowledge of torture practices have always sounded carefully crafted – and therefore equally unconvincing.

If she is even complicit she should go and spare us the distraction so we can get on with the business of putting our country back together.

It still amazes me that people are so easily distracted from the issue here. The issue is not Nancy its Bush, the CIA, and their lawyers.

Its not about who was briefed on this issue or what they were briefed about. It is about the CIA and the Bush administration authorizing, instituting, and using torture on prisoners.

Torture is illegeal, immoral, and against everything we as America stands for.

Stop pointing the finger at Nancy and whoever else (repub and dems) were briefed and point at the Bush administration and their lawyers.

I now support Pelosi. The more that those incompetent Republicans try to blame her for knowing what THEY were doing, the more I am for Pelosi. Why isn't Newt and the Republicans vocal about prosecuting Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the like. False intelligence to the U.N, torture of suspects to try and link al Qaeda to Saddam Hussein's regime... how disgusting? If that is what the last administration did then they are no better than Saddam. AND DON'T LIE AND SAY YOU DID IT IN MY NAME. I am disgusted as an American if that is what the Republicans did in my and my fellow Americans honor. Shame on the Republicans. And I'm not impressed with the obvious diversion tactics.

Hmmm guess it is true, what goes around, comes around. Queen Nancy was so hung up on getting Bush, she didn't think the tables would turn on her....... I would love to see this nut job go away!
Guess the 39% will still continue to blame Bush, I am surprised that they haven't claimed that Bush waterboarded Nancy and that is why she is so freakin nuts!
She is definitely the poster child of why you should not do botox!!!!

Well, if the Republicans are so set against Pelosi's information...uh, why didn't those REPUBLICANS object to Bush? They were just rubber-stamping Bush and have no right now to whine as usual. Boehner is a fake tan Republican goofball. And I don't doubt the CIA manipulated information to suit Bush...that's how Bush and Cheney worked and used as sneaky a tactic as they could to get what they wanted. And we all know the Republicans in Congress would've stifled Pelosi had she tried to complain back then...that's how Repubs work. So they need to "get over themselves" and do some HONEST work in Washington or go home.

I don't love Nancy P., but she's not the real criminal here. The Republicans would love to divert attention away from the fact that it was their executive branch that committed these atrocities in the name of the USA. They assume that people who care about seeing justice done on this issue will simply change their minds if a Democrat is slightly implicated as Nancy might be, but on that idea they are dead wrong. If Pelosi does have any errors to face up to, they are not a tenth the size of those that should put Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, Feith, Wolfowitz, Tenet, Yoo, Bybee, Bradbury, Addington, Armitage, Libby and Bush in the dock.

MS. Pelosi never ceases to amaze me, she consistantly makes blunders like this latest flap with the CIA, and, she is one of our leaders in DC. Manny of us can clearly recall her tantrums regarding her preferences of a Presidential jet to fly her, her family and her friends back and forth between DC and California.

What I cannot understand is how intelligent California voters keep her in office, well maybe on second thought.................

I am an independent voter and do not favor either party, I vote for the best, most experienced, intellegent non corupt individuals I can find, Ms Pelosi is not in this catagorie!

It is hard to approve of someone who is pretty obviously lying and pretty obviously trying to make the CIA take the fall for her. She doesn't rate too highly on the morals scale.

This poll means nothing. While Pelosi's performance in the past couple of weeks is deplorable, it's also likely that many disapprove of the job she's doing as Speaker in concert with the general public disapproval of the performance of the Congress as a whole.
