RNC showdown over 'socialist' resolution may be avoided

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/18/art.getty.steele.rnc.jpg caption="Steele is against a resolution renaming the Democratic Party.'"]OXON HILL, Maryland (CNN) - Members of the Republican National Committee appear to have reached a compromise that would let GOP leaders avoid a possible dispute over a controversial resolution that calls on Democrats to re-name their party the "Democrat Socialist party."

Steele has come out against the resolution, calling it "not an appropriate way to express our views on the issues of the day." One of Steele's allies on the committee, Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, told CNN the resolution is "stupid" and "ridiculous."

However, New Jersey committeeman David Norcross, one of the sponsors of the resolution, told CNN the language is being massaged so that Steele and others on the committee will be more receptive.

"The language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page," Norcross said.

He said that as of Tuesday afternoon, the chairman of the RNC Standing Committee on Resolutions had changed the language to "condemn the Democrats' march to socialism" instead of "talking about the 'Democrat Socialist' party."

The change was made, Norcross said, so that members "wouldn't have to fight about it, and I think everybody agreed."

Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus, another Steele ally, expressed confidence the proposal will be tweaked in the resolution committee, and that it should pass without issue.

"My prediction is that things are going to be very smooth tomorrow," Priebus said. "But at the end of the day, it's up the resolutions committee."

On the heels of Steele making a speech about how things are going to be different from now on, we get this example of Republicans afraid to speak the TRUTH. Sure looks like the same old, same old to me.

Why is the RNC and Michael Steele so reluctant to call the Democratic Party what it is: The Democratic Socialist (or Marxist) Party?

Talk about your childish stupidity. Is there anyone who wonders why less than 25% of the country still identifies themselves as being Republicans?

These folks are really lost in the wilderness. As a lifelong liberal I find it truly sad that the GOP is reduced to such comedy. And the very tragic part is that many of them are serious about such goings on. Embarrassing !!!

If you don't have anything to add to the betterment of the American people I should ask the Repubs to shot up.

The GOP is so small-minded, lame, and immature. ALL the problems facing the country, and this juvenile game commands their attention? It's beyond sad.

So then the Democrats would be within their rights to call for the Republicans to change their name to the American Nazi Party or something like that? Sounds like they're about to put their foot in it again over at the RNC.

After eight years of a failed and destructive Republican Party in charge more accurate would be the Republican Fascist Party.

Instead of coming up with solutions to help the country, the Republicans seek to divide the country to the advantage of the party. I would find it funny if so many people didnt take them seriously.

Is this really how the Republicans are spending their time nowadays? No wonder they're losing seats like crazy.

This is the "work" that Republicans do. They need to spend their time more wisely, like thinking up their next scare tactic.

    Holy political grandstanding, batman.

Why don't they focus on fixing their own problems, rather than always attempting to create them for the democrats?

You have got to be kidding me. This is what the top minds of the RNC are worried about...trying to get Democrats to call themselves Socialists?

Can we PLEASE just do away with the Republicans once and for all!

How about a counter resolution calling on the GOP to rename their party the Republican Thieves and Murderers Party? If our representatives are going to be wasting precious time on this nonsense, the dems may as well respond in kind.

With two wars, an economic recession, a health care crisis and looming energy concerns, you'd think they'd do something more constructive than figure out how to name-call their opponents.

What are the Republics doing to help this country? Grow up already!
