RNC showdown over 'socialist' resolution may be avoided

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/18/art.getty.steele.rnc.jpg caption="Steele is against a resolution renaming the Democratic Party.'"]OXON HILL, Maryland (CNN) - Members of the Republican National Committee appear to have reached a compromise that would let GOP leaders avoid a possible dispute over a controversial resolution that calls on Democrats to re-name their party the "Democrat Socialist party."

Steele has come out against the resolution, calling it "not an appropriate way to express our views on the issues of the day." One of Steele's allies on the committee, Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, told CNN the resolution is "stupid" and "ridiculous."

However, New Jersey committeeman David Norcross, one of the sponsors of the resolution, told CNN the language is being massaged so that Steele and others on the committee will be more receptive.

"The language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page," Norcross said.

He said that as of Tuesday afternoon, the chairman of the RNC Standing Committee on Resolutions had changed the language to "condemn the Democrats' march to socialism" instead of "talking about the 'Democrat Socialist' party."

The change was made, Norcross said, so that members "wouldn't have to fight about it, and I think everybody agreed."

Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus, another Steele ally, expressed confidence the proposal will be tweaked in the resolution committee, and that it should pass without issue.

"My prediction is that things are going to be very smooth tomorrow," Priebus said. "But at the end of the day, it's up the resolutions committee."

So, as the President addresses the issues confronting our country, the GOP is debating how to effectrively wage a war of name calling. Keep it up guys.

Continue the name calling. Continue the demonizing. The WHOLE country is watching the GOP behave like snot-nosed, 6-year old brat of a child

Why invest all this time and energy on a resolution that could not possibly ever have any practical effect? Their constituents would be better served by spending every available minute developing policy and plans of action than petty name-calling.

So, this is what the GOP is wasting their time on? Apparently, there are no pressing problems in America?

The Republics can't seem to agree on the best way to self destruct. Perhaps they should debate whether they should rename the Republic party to the Republic Fascist Party of the Fascist Republic Party; either would be a good choice. Isn't it fun watching idiots play?

  6. Republican not buying it..

This is exactly why I have left the republican party – they are no longer relevant with today's issues that affect my me and my family.

The GOP strategy to make the party in power change its name is a surefire way to keep the status quo. Keep up the good work!

The very fact that such an absurd debate is even being held is a textbook case example of the intellectual bankruptcy and irrelevance of the modern Republican party. The day is not far away when the RNC will be able to meet comfortably in a phone booth.

Also, perhaps Mr. Norcross should move to Alabama, Utah, or Alaska, where he'd feel more at home. We don't want you up here! GET OUT.

So this is the best they can do? Their constituents begged them to start talking about ideas and they want to waste time and energy calling Dems names. I think I will start a petition asking the DNC to start calling Repubs the "Anglo-Christian Extremists Coalition". Oh wait, the DNC is busy working on real problems.....

Could the GOP be anymore desperate and pathetic? How about spending more energy focusing on my most Americans think you suck and less on petty name calling? Reagan in spinning in his grave at this embarrassment of a political party.

How about them republicans! are they going to change their name to the Coalition of Conservative Socialists ? C.C.S. that fits them very well since Bush and Paulson basically socialized Wall Street and the banking industry with tax payer funds last fall.

Should Dems go ahead and try to rename the GOP to "Bigot Small Government Rednecks" or something along those lines? It's really embarrassing that adults that are supposed to be running the government are engaged in this kind of low brow mud slinging. Get a life David Norcross.

It would be more pragmatic for them to rename their own party The Republican Obsolete Party or The Morons of the Republican Party ... either way they are fading in to the sunset ... maybe they should tackle real issues by working WITH the Democrats instead of being totally absurd

First it was Barack the Magic Negro... Next the Democratic Socialist Party! Maybe the resolution should have read more appropriately “The GOP Bunch of Clowns final March into Idiot-ism”!

What a bunch of friggin idiots..

Does Norcross know what Socialism is? It is not what the defunct Soviet Union or China or Cuba or Korea practiced. What they practiced and are practicing is called state controlled capitalism. Socialism is a latter stage of capitalism that takes into consideration of the working poor and to eliminate poverty.

Fear mongering goes a long way when addressing those who don't know enough.

So this is what the Republicans are spending their time on while the Democratic Socialists do all the work? What a useless party the GOP has begun. Reagan must be turning in his grave.
