RNC showdown over 'socialist' resolution may be avoided
[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/03/18/art.getty.steele.rnc.jpg caption="Steele is against a resolution renaming the Democratic Party.'"]OXON HILL, Maryland (CNN) - Members of the Republican National Committee appear to have reached a compromise that would let GOP leaders avoid a possible dispute over a controversial resolution that calls on Democrats to re-name their party the "Democrat Socialist party."
Steele has come out against the resolution, calling it "not an appropriate way to express our views on the issues of the day." One of Steele's allies on the committee, Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, told CNN the resolution is "stupid" and "ridiculous."
However, New Jersey committeeman David Norcross, one of the sponsors of the resolution, told CNN the language is being massaged so that Steele and others on the committee will be more receptive.
"The language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page," Norcross said.
He said that as of Tuesday afternoon, the chairman of the RNC Standing Committee on Resolutions had changed the language to "condemn the Democrats' march to socialism" instead of "talking about the 'Democrat Socialist' party."
The change was made, Norcross said, so that members "wouldn't have to fight about it, and I think everybody agreed."
Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus, another Steele ally, expressed confidence the proposal will be tweaked in the resolution committee, and that it should pass without issue.
"My prediction is that things are going to be very smooth tomorrow," Priebus said. "But at the end of the day, it's up the resolutions committee."

Anyting that the RNC or Michael Steele or for that matter any republican does or thinks nowadays is just stupid. Just remember you had your time to solve the problems but you blew it! Now its the other guys turn. All you have to do is just shut up and sit down and keep your mouth shut!

This is the best the Republicans can come up with? A crating economy, health care, two wars, global warming, .... What a waste of time!!! Republicans will you lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. Times are too serious for the trival crap!!

What an interesting discussion in the Republican Party. Rather than focussing on developing solid forward looking policies and providing an alternative to the Democratic Party, the RNC is caught in a battle of semantics. The only term I can think of fitting this behavior is reactionary.
We're fighting two Republican initiated wars, struggling to resuscitate an economy that the Republicans eviscerated, and succumbing to the weight of a budget deficit that the Republicans happily sponsored, and the RNC is debating what to call the Democrats? You'd think they had better things to do than that???? That's why I'm an independent now...
