CNN Poll: Favorable opinion of Dick Cheney on the rise

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Cheney's popularity has risen in recent weeks."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - The same day Dick Cheney delivered  a major speech on the battle against terrorism, a new national poll suggests that favorable opinions of the former vice president are on the rise.

But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Wednesday morning, indicates that a majority of Americans still have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney.

Fifty-five percent of people questioned in the poll say they have an unfavorable opinion of the former vice president. Thirty-seven percent say they have a favorable opinion of Cheney, up eight points from January when he left office.

In the past two months the former vice president has become a frequent critic of the new Administration in numerous national media interviews.

“Is Cheney’s uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration?  Almost certainly not,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Former President George W. Bush's favorable rating rose six points in that same time period, and Bush has not given a single public speech since he left office.”

The poll suggests that 41 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the former president, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably.

The survey’s release came just a few hours before Cheney spoke out Thursday on the war against terror during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington based think tank. The former vice president defended the Bush Administration’s handling of the war on terror and challenged the Obama Administration’s attempt to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted May 14-17, with 1,010 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

OHMY GOSH, Cheney go on home getting so tired of looking at your smirky face!!! The only ones making his polls go up are the republicans. Bush and Cheney made enough money off this gulf war
to last them ten lifetimes. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, this man is sick

The average American is more like to loose their job, run out of unemployment, loose their car, then their house. Then die from cancer because they have no health insurance. Than to die at the hands of a terrorist.

    1. Cheney/Bush lost more jobs than any other president
    2. Cheney/Bush mismanaged economic issues
    3. Cheney/Bush did nothing but make healthcare more expensive
    4. Cheney/Bush did very little to help the environment

Die hard Republicans need to stop the hatred of this nation, and look for ways to help.

Seriously? Seriously? Darth Vader's popularity is on the rise. So I guess Hell did just freeze over and...what's that, a flying pig.

He's an evil little Troll and only those right-wing wing-nuts of the Fascist Republic Party would love this guy.

Since these calls were by telephone (I assume land lines), the poll will not be accurate. Most younger people have cell phones, and that demographic will change the dynamics. I fail to see how anyone could have a favorable opinion of Mr. Cheney, but no one called me to ask. Older voters, who have land lines, are usually more conservative.

You must be kidding. What a short memory some Americans must have. This is the guy that assaulted our Constitution, lied to the American people, and advocated an unnecessary war. He should have a zero rating.

The best defense in being rid of Cheny (Head of American Terrorism) is a nice, big, juicy, heart attack for him!

Why isn't God, doing his work for the American people!

37% of those polled have a favorable opinion of a man who lied to them, sending thousands of American soldiers to their demise? I wonder if any of those 37% are the same people saying Speaker Pelosi should resign for an alleged falsehood.

More Americans have a favorable opinion of Dick "BTK" Cheney than in Jan. when he left office. Just goes to show gullible and what a short memory span many of us have.

I have always admired Mr.Cheney and there is nothing that will change my mind. He has given his life for this country and he maked me feel safer knowing he was and is on watch for the country. Instead of the hatered people show him, they should stand to thank him for his efforts to keep this country safe. Those of you out there go ahead with all your name calling and ill words, he will long endure into history and that will be his judge, not you the faint of heart.
