Obama fundraiser to be named ambassador to UK

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Chicago businessman Louis Susman will be named ambassador to the Court of St. James's."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama intends to nominate Chicago businessman Louis Susman to be the country's next U.S. ambassador to the Court of St. James's, according to sources familiar with the nomination.

Susman is 71 and retired in February as the vice chairman of Citigroup. Susman was a prominent fundraiser and "bundler" from Obama's presidential campaign and was also a key fundraiser for Sen. John Kerry's presidential bid.

The pick has been approved by the British government and Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Did they ask the queen or did she just throw in her 2 cents? Does it really matter if she approves.

I am disappointed with Pres Obama.
why does the USA continue this terriblet policy of rewards, and not use professional diplomats like every other civilized democracy?

In other words, Obama continues the tradition of "pay to play" in Washington D.C. And where exactly is this "change" we've been promised?

Presidents have always rewarded those who contribute largely to their campaigns. This is nothing new. I guess those who think otherwise have not followed this kind of news over the years. Yawn.

Yawn @ the pay to play nonsense...this is par for the course for every POTUS. MNoreover, it's a cushy and somewhat meaningless post given sort of as an honorary nod. There's really no work to be done in maintaining our friendly relationship with Britain.

What, like he'd name an enemy to a critical diplomatic post? Who do you Repugs suggest, Rush? Cheney? Heh heh, maybe Dubya?

EVERY President appoints ambassadors the same way....Bush did it, Regan did it...

In case the hate mongers here forget, Obama just appointed a Republican to be an ambassador this week! Funny you don't mention that...perhaps too mush abstinence has clouded your brains.

  17. Pay to Play Politics as Usual

This is the real Obama – cut from the South Chicago Political games where pay to play is the norm.

So much for change. This is stinky politics as usual

This is trivial compared to the Bush-era appointees.

David Wilkins – personal friend of Bush "donated" 33K to the cause and got appointed to Canada. He'd never even been there!

Michael Wood – Personal friend of Bush, donated and nailed down Sweden. He was a magazine publisher – experience?!??

Roland Arnall – Handed over 200K and got the Netherlands. He was a banker.

Let's not even get into all the old Yale "Skull and Bones" members Bush inserted all over the administration. There's an organization America should be wary of.

A grotesque insult to our closest ally in the world. These sorts of contributor creeps are supposed to get ambassadorships to Switzerland or Monaco or Luxembourg or the Bahamas. NOT to Great Britain! And he's a Citigroup creep – so much for the anti-Wall Street empty rhetoric!

To any British readers: Please accept our apologies. Remember that 47% of us did not vote for this clown. With any amount of luck, over 50% of us will not vote for him again.

All ambassadors are political contributors – that is their payback. It's the way it works under both parties. Real diplomacy is done by career employees at the State Department. At least Obama didn't appoint his gay lover to be ambassador to Poland, like Bush did.
