Liberty University bans College Dems

(CNN) - Liberty University, the evangelical school in Virginia founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, is drawing heat Friday for its decision to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on campus.

According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, the school decided a week ago the organization "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and therefore could no longer be sanctioned.

Maria Childress, the staff adviser to the club, told the paper the school - which opposes abortion rights and gay marriage - had issues with the Democratic Party platform.

Childress says she was told by Mark Hine, the vice president of student affairs, that "'You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative.'"

In a conference call with reporters Friday, Terry McAuliffe - the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who is running for governor of Virginia - sharply criticized the move.

The university did not return CNN's request for comment.

    You support torture? Fine
You support capitol punishment? That is good.
100,000 dead Iraqis mean nothing to you? No problem.
Believe that sick people without insurance should just quietly die. Great!
What is that you say, you believe that two consenting adults should be able to marry whatever their sexes? Well, that shows you aren't moral enough to be here.

Ok, so this is what a religious university is all about?

I suppose you can't be a Democrat and a Christian in the same way that you can't be a Republican and have a brain.

Why is it that all of you spewing hate on here have no problem when a university bans ROTC but can't control your rage when a university bans a group that you support?

Why would anyone who believes in intellectual honesty go to liberty University. You have to know your getting a twisted education.

Yes they are private and are allowed to ban what they want, but does it make them look ridiculous? Of course.

I never saw any "libs" complaining about Republicans being banned...I'm far more liberal than conservative but I would never want ROTC or GOP student groups banned....nice straw-man distraction from a few posters.

Religious finatics and their "beliefs" have spread more evil than any other force on earth since the begining of man.
The current day psychos include all so called fundamentalists, like the Taliban, Falwell, Dobson, Robertson, and many more.
We should be more cautious in providing "non-profit" status for all churches. Many churches are a social parisitic klans for profit.
And this has nothing to do with spirtuality, which to me is very different than religion. And any religion that excludes any group of people is not spirtually based.

So basically they are calling Democrats "evil." That's very interesting, but not surprising. The right-wing nut job faction of the party is getting more and more crazy, and their taking the whole Republican party down the toilet with them. The VAST majority of the citizens of this country disagree with these right-wing wackos, and they will soon be insignificant.

Reason #1,000 why the Republican Party as hijacked by the religious right is irrelevant and well on it's way to extinction. Good riddance.

I am a democrat but this is a private university. If you have a problem with it – don't attend the university. It's that simple.

Maybe the University is run by a bunch of brutish boors rather than broad-minded blokes. We opine that they may benefit from headshrinks.

Well, it is a private university. They have that right. It's sad, but they have that right to ban anyone they want to.

You are wrong – the Democratic party does NOT oppose abortion rights – it suports them. Neither party supports gay marriage.

Liberty University have the right to take such stupid stance. But they should be compelled to change the LIBERTY name to something else, like DICK university.

In a poll a few months ago, approximately 21% of the voters labeled themselves as republican.

And now we see what religious tolerance means to right wing republicans.

    Hmmm .

A majority of Christians in this country favor torture, preemptive war, and capital punishment.

Maybe its time someone banned Christianity.

As a private school, it has the right to ban any organization...but it testifies to the intrinsic intolerance Christians have for anything it perceives as a threat.

Last time I checked, "Christian" does not equal "republican."
