Liberal activists to descend upon DC

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Liberal political activists will descend on the nation's capital next week to plot strategy on issues ranging from healthcare to energy and the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

In previous years the conference was titled "Take Back America," but with President Obama now in the White House it has been renamed "America's Future Now."

Obama addressed the conference in 2006 and 2007, and has been invited to appear once again. So far, the president hasn't RSVP'd - but the 2,000 activists who have will be rubbing elbows with the likes of Jared Bernstein, Vice President Biden's economic advisor; former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean; and Mitch Stewart, who directs Organizing for America, Obama's political arm at the DNC.

Robert Borsage and Roger Hickey of Campaign for America's Future, who are organizing the conference, speak effusively about the president's policy goals, but acknowledge the liberal constituency will not always be supportive of Obama's decisions.

"We know there will be times when we disagree with the president," said Hickey, who added that the goal is to make sure when a conflict arises it can be worked out in a civil manner.

Some liberals are already frustrated by the president's support of preventive detention and his approach to banking reform.

While Borsage said he thinks that Obama is "prepared to do some heavy lifting" to help move his agenda through Congress, he added that it "remains to be seen what he will spend political capital on."

That is where the progressive movement comes in. "For progressives, now is the time to mobilize and drive these issues through," said Hickey, who added that liberals will focus their efforts on convincing Congress to embrace the president's agenda.

On Wednesday, Campaign for America's Future, in conjunction with Media Matters for America, will release a report in which they argue that the U.S. is not a center-right nation as has been portrayed in the media, but rather a centrist or center-left nation. That point of discussion will lead up to the conference, which begins on June 1.

I've seen the liberals' version of the future... it looks a lot like the past the former Soviet block countries have moved away from.

    "Progressive" fail.

By the way, how can people call themselves "progressive" and then advocate for socialist policies that failed in other nations generations ago? What? Were just the "wrong" bunch of socialists running the programs?

I have family that escapted the Soviet Union. Believe me... socialism IS NOT paradise.

Good... I hope these groups get Obama's ear and get him to do some of the things he hasn't gone far enough in... like investigating the war criminals from the previous administration, re-visiting all the trade agreements that are killing manufacturing in this country like NAFTA & being more agressive in regulating the banking industry!

It was Franklin D. Roosevelt who famously told his allies "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it"

I think it was a good choice for Sonia Sotomayor...she does have legal histoyr and if you're going to pull cases you need to do it through the expanse of her whole legal career and not just eight cases.
She is solid..sympathtic...intituitive...and holds wisdom. I don"t buy the argument that she will 'make law'...this role is a change from her previous court work...she will honor the constitution and interpret or review law as it applies, not create it (which would be unconstitutional). Give the girl a break..she earned this...kudos to her.

JP, no liberal anywhere ever has wanted to change America into a totalitarian dictatorship that is under the thumb of a Communist superpower. In fact, it is Conservatism with its whacko-global economics that has put us under the thumb of Communist China. China provides us with products, loans money to our government, and Conservatives are to blame for it. Of course, they made a lot of money, so that justifies it, I guess.

Who opened the door to free trade with China in the 90's???? Try again fool it wasn't a conservative. Captialism doesn't mix well with Communism -you have what we have today.

I am such a shiny blue liberal progressive Dem...I SHOULD TOTALLY BE THERE.
(that's right, I shine like a diamond in the sun!)
And guys, could you please see if you can get Obama or Eric Holder to initiate a case against the Bush administration for their various crimes...including torture. That should be the focus of "America's Future Now." 🙂 WOW, we did it, I can't believe we have the majority now...
I guess WE can....and we always could

The whole liberal vs conservative dialog is so played out. It is like the media and political parties have americans at each others throat over politcial dogma that many americans can't even define.

    Talk about divide conquer..........

Have fun, liberals... live it up while you can. Atlas has already shrugged.

Think things look bad now? Give it 36 months or so for these Robin Hood policies to really soak into the market. I anticipate unemployment in the range of 15%, inflation at the same and interest rates pushing 20%.

Who in the hell do you think is going to be investing (AKA "creating new jobs") in this future market? Investors are going John Galt and they're going to sit on their investment dollars until the "One and Done" rookie is out of office.

"America's Future Now"? how can the "future" ever be "now"? After repealing the laws of thermodynamics and the laws of supply and demand, liberals still aren't satisfied–time too must go!

Seriously, though, only in revolutionary utopian vanguard movements is the future, and realizing the future in the present, of such paramount concern. Welcome back Josef.

nothing like inclusiveness to keep the wheel greased; but, what about this Montana town, that wants to bring the gitmo terrorist there , that they can be housed in their nice new jail, at American tax payers expense, so the town can reap the benefits of jobs, money,etc,..just send them back where they came from,Saudia Arabia, maybe they will blow themselves up, and we will save Montana the embarrassment..

What i want in health care
    1. low cost
    2. coverage of per existing conditions and long term conditions with no limits on dollar amount
    3. coverage for prevention and early detection
    4. low cost drugs
    5. Health care even when you loose your job or switch employers
    6. a better ranking number than 38th in the world for health care!!!

So the president has invite EVERY to hold health care reform meetings in there home to come up with idea's. This includes EVERY! Not just the poor or democrats or liberals. EVERYONE!! Be apart of the debate or say NOTHING in the future!~ Surely we can come to some sort of solution together that will please most people. Keeping our people healthy, our economy thriving, and that fairly compensates the professionals that have studies so hard to be doctors and nurses ect.
