Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/06/art.newt.jpg caption="Gingrich tweeted that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rush Limbaugh isn't the only one calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Newt Gingrich is, too - and he's demanding that Obama's pick to the Supreme Court withdraw her nomination.

On Twitter, Gingrich pointed to a line in Sotomayor's 2001 speech to a Hispanic group in Berkeley that has drawn fire from some conservatives.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," Sotomayor said in that speech, describing how life experience can inform judicial opinions.

On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism."

Moments later, he followed up with the message: "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs responded to Gingrich's criticism at Wednesday's briefing.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," Gibbs said.

  1. Give it Up GOP

The GOP should challenge this nomination all the way. And in doing so will alienate all women and Hispanics and accelerate the total demise of this old and archaic party.

Neither should have to withdraw. Grand judgments based on racial/gender stereotypes might be inaccurate, but is not inherently prejudice.

Does she have a history of finding white males guilty and latino women innocent? That's what's important. I'm a white male and can honestly agree that with a broad stroke, latino women have probably had it harder. That's not racism, it's common knowledge.

We should withdraw Newtie's citizenship.... assuming he even has a birth certificate to prove he's a citizen.

Newt can cup my newts for all I care. His opinion and this GOP barrage of talking points intended to sway public opinion BEFORE the hearings are a nullity.

This is coming from the party that passed out a Christmas CD with "Barack the Magic Negro" on it. Sotomayor came from a poor latino family with a single mother. Every thing she has accomplished she has earned through hardships most white males in America will never know. I would like to remind everyone that we live in a country that never even passed the equal rights amendment for women. She deserves this position and with a male dominated court system we deserve the diversity of opinion she would bring.

This man talks too much about nothing. As an independent voter, we need to do homework on our public servants. This is not a personal attack, his policies speaks for themselves…start with Contract to America.

Gingrich and Limbaugh are the last people who should be calling anyone racist.

According to dictionary definition: 1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
    2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

    racist rac'ist adj. & n.

That sounds like the entire GOP party. The good old white boys club.

It sounds like Robert Gibbs is threatening anyone who dares to oppose anything Obamaland comes up with. Anyone with an
opposing opinion is bullied into submission. It is sad to watch as
    free speech in America dies.

When Newt Gingrich, Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh become leading moral arbiters for the Republican party, the Democrats are in good shape.

This from a man who cheats on his wife while she is in the hospital!! I guess if someone is not a white, fat male who cheats to make headlines then the rests of the world is a racist. Gingrich needs to crawl back into his dirty little hole and forget about calling people names.

I can't wait until white men are the minority. Then they'll really have something to complain about.

I am offended by the comments of Newt Gingrich, but I completely understand where he is coming from. As someone with a checkered past, he should temper his criticisms of anyone else. Partisanship is very hard to disguise and the constant barrage of negative remarks concerning anything to do with the Obama administration is a clear demonstration of intent. I will delight in the fact that Gingrich, Cheney, Limbaugh and the like will be completely disgruntled for 8 years.

Dear GOP, please trot out more Old White Southern Guys (OWSGs) to make your case against racism. Their position on the Confederate Flag, for example, gives them BOATLOADS of credibility on the issue.

Better yet, their presence merely solidifies the obvious: OSWGs represent the last gasp of a moribund party.

CNN needs to quit covering crackpots like Gingrich. It is an insult to people's intelligence to think that we would consider the opinion of a crooked politician and family deserter like him. Print the opinions of credible people, not these folks on the sidelines throwing stones with nothing at risk. Limbaugh also falls in that category. I don't see him running for office or trying to fix anything. These two are both just a lot of hot air.

ridiculous! everyday, the likes of palin, limbaugh, or gingrich make the GOP look like a slow-motion trainwreck! keep calling this hard-working self-made Latina a "reverse-racist"...i'm sure that will go over well with your Latino voting bloc. is gingrich an idiot? the US census has determined that by 2030 every one in four people in the US will be Latino...guys like gingrich ignore the plight of the immigrant experience in American because they have lived with white privelage their entire lives. even though i'm a white woman, even i can see this...
