Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/06/art.newt.jpg caption="Gingrich tweeted that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rush Limbaugh isn't the only one calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Newt Gingrich is, too - and he's demanding that Obama's pick to the Supreme Court withdraw her nomination.

On Twitter, Gingrich pointed to a line in Sotomayor's 2001 speech to a Hispanic group in Berkeley that has drawn fire from some conservatives.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," Sotomayor said in that speech, describing how life experience can inform judicial opinions.

On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism."

Moments later, he followed up with the message: "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs responded to Gingrich's criticism at Wednesday's briefing.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," Gibbs said.

I would ask Gingrich how he drew his conclusion that she was a racist because of her comment quoted in the article. My problem with this nominee was her reaction when the white firefighters sued for "reverse discrimination" and she disagreed. I would like her to explain that decision before I label her a racist.

You asked for comment. I made two very articulate attempts and you are censoring me. What is the point in asking for comment?

If only there were an uninhabited country left on our earth where newtie, lush and all of their fellow billionaires whom they represent could exile to,start another country and all of there followers could be their "slaves".I wonder then how great these leeches would seem to their followers. READ HISTORY PEOPLE. Sotomayer has more integrity in her smallest finger than the Newt has in his entire stinking body.

(Fairness) and (Equality) for (all) people in every area of life, is the only (REPARATIONS) that could ever be paid to me. (IN LOVING MEMORY OF (MY) ANCESTORS)–To Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the like, (RACISM), is the precise (evil) Osama Bin Laden used to pull off the (9/11) attacks. In other words, Osama Bin Laden made sure that (NO) persons of color(namely Black people), were recipients of the (MONEY) sent to the hijackers. He knew that, (THAT), would call atttention to them, and blow their (evil deed). -(Race-Baiting:(EQUALS) a whistle-blower to have someone unjustifiably murdered)

Come on, if Democrats had been this picky over the last eight years, neither Roberts, or Alito, or any of their neo-cons would have been appointed!

Perhaps she was talking about a situation that a latina woman would indeed have a better perspective on. I'd like to hear the context of this remark. Would Newt understand the struggles of a poor migrant worker better than Sotomayor? Or the challenges of raising a child in an inner-city housing project?

I wish Newt would shut up because he is just plain dumb, and he is insulting to both men and women because he thinks we're stupid enough to take him seriously.

Wow, the Republicans just get dumber every day, don't they? They actually think this kind of behavior would accomplish something. Instead, it just makes them stupid.

Her comment was clearly about life experience, not race, whereas Gingrich's counter-example simply emphasizes race.

Since he is smart enough to know the difference, he is simply lying for the benefit of those too stupid to see the difference.

Classic GOP – take a full speech, distort one sentence from it, and then make preposterous claims.

Just google "sotomayor wise latina full quote" and find one of the articles that give her whole 2001 speech. Make up your own mind, rather than letting serial adulterer Gingrich, drug-addled Limbaugh, and that odious little racist toad Sessions do your thinking for you.

Gingrich has long passed his time. Stay in your lane, you are a former speaker of a now defunct minority party. With every word, he sinks himself and the party he used to lead further.

It's healthy for the country to start talking about these issues. However, the "leaders" on the right and the left need to stop using these episodes as a vehicle to promote their own agenda.

losing their minds. Newt needs to shut up, we all know he, KKKanity, Limbaugh, Huckabee, Romney, O'Reilly, Beck etc are angry white men. I'm just wondering which one is going to die first from a heart attack from all this Obama hate.

I dont find her comment ot be racist at all. I find it to be her opinion and she has a right to it. Gingrich is always trying to start a bunch of junk over the silliest things. he needs to get a real life.

So...now we have Limburger AND Gingrich, both bloated and neither with ANYTHING having to do with our current legislature, dictating policy?

Just goes to show the GOP hates being in the minority so much they'll do ANYTHING to try and usurp the party that beat them out at every turn.

Hey, GOP! How about helping FIX some of the horrific CRAP your party dumped on this country over the past eight years? THEN maybe we'll start listening to you again.

I read her comment as saying she would reach a better CONCLUSION not that she was a better person. Perhaps people need to re-read for content before they make inflammatory statements showing themselves as pompous asses.

The desperation of the minority party is overwhelming. It has ceased to be comical. Now it's just sad.
