Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/06/art.newt.jpg caption="Gingrich tweeted that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rush Limbaugh isn't the only one calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Newt Gingrich is, too - and he's demanding that Obama's pick to the Supreme Court withdraw her nomination.

On Twitter, Gingrich pointed to a line in Sotomayor's 2001 speech to a Hispanic group in Berkeley that has drawn fire from some conservatives.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," Sotomayor said in that speech, describing how life experience can inform judicial opinions.

On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism."

Moments later, he followed up with the message: "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs responded to Gingrich's criticism at Wednesday's briefing.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," Gibbs said.

Old Newt should just keep on yapping....he's doing wonders for the Democrats! Of course the 25% of our electorate that proudly wears the mantel of far-right, neocon Republican will lap it up and loudly echo such nonsense, only pushing the few remaining moderate Republicans away from the GOP. This nomination was a stroke of brilliance on many levels – she's superbly qualified and the Republicans can only, only lose with the talking points they've now released to the media and all America. They are buffoons of the first order!

I think that the Republican Party, of which Newt is trying so hard to become the leader, holds the title as the most racist party, given that most of its members are southern, white, and racist. How ironic that charges if racism should come from Rush/Newt, two old fat white guys from the south. Hey, I'm an old white fat guy from the south who knows better than to call a girl from the Bronx racist.

The more Newt and Rish talk, the deeper the hole the GOP digs for itself. Keep it up guys.

Newt is %100 correct! Welcome to the Socialist party , Newt. White male hating is just the beginning. What would she tell the 7 firemen and their families who lost their promotion because no black guys passed the test? Is it possible these particular white men were just more qualified? Look at Europe. In the UK it's LEGAL to discriminate against a white guy if he has the exact same qualifications as a minority or woman. Is this what the civil rights and feminist movement had in mind? Eventually the average white man will take his head out of the sand and revolt. Once this becomes a voting issue, the 'Socialist' party will crumble.

As a white male, wouldn't it be racist if I said that "as a white male, I have richer experiences that do latina women."? She's racist, bottom line, and not suitable for this nations highest court.

oooh, i feel so sorry for all these rich old white men, being discriminated against! C'mon! For real? It's such an obvious straw horse, and I'm saying this as a rich white (not yet old) man.

don't these pointless pot-stirrers get it yet? Nobody gives a flying fart about their opinions anymore. Maybe Mitt Romney has room for them all on his shiny blue planet. We're tired of having them on this one.

I wish people would read her whole speech. In that comment, she was talking specifically about race and sex discrimination cases, and how having women and minorities on the bench can be a boon.

Pure comedy gold. Tell us about how you used to have to walk through nine feet of snow to go to school next, then the one about how minorities are taking away your rights as a whitey. Then go home to your third trophy wife.

maybe if she had said " walk a mile in my shoes" before you make a misinformed opinion about how I grew up, because obviously if you came from a life of priveledge and are a white male you opinion doen't count in a female latina's world.

I think the GOP took what she said out of context, but then again the GOP is still run by the old gaurd ( The priveledged and white)

My question is what is wrong with her statement? It only has racial undertones if you are looking for them. This is definately poor excuse for her to step down. I bet anything I own that is she would have said a black, asian, indian male Newt and Rush would have not parted there lips. But truth be told she is right! Life experience does help you forma a better view of the world and how thing and people should be judged... Im already liking this lady!

Own yes why don't we let the Muck Rakers have their say and use this dopey reason to force her to resign! Or we could look at her record and see if she is qualified for the possition and is a fair and reasonable judge.

Can you imagine what this counry would be like if we just let Gingrich or Limbaugh make our decisions for us. They are a pair of reasonable and honest men arn't they?
