Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/06/art.newt.jpg caption="Gingrich tweeted that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rush Limbaugh isn't the only one calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Newt Gingrich is, too - and he's demanding that Obama's pick to the Supreme Court withdraw her nomination.

On Twitter, Gingrich pointed to a line in Sotomayor's 2001 speech to a Hispanic group in Berkeley that has drawn fire from some conservatives.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," Sotomayor said in that speech, describing how life experience can inform judicial opinions.

On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism."

Moments later, he followed up with the message: "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs responded to Gingrich's criticism at Wednesday's briefing.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," Gibbs said.

Sotomayor is a racist. All one has to do is read what she says and wrote.

Another typical Obama nominee. The only qualifications Obama sought was race and gender.

Why doesn't New Gingrich (and Dick Cheney) just go away. Since when does anyone care what these has-beens have to say.

If one actually looks at the CONTEXT of Sotymayor's quote, she was specifically discussing the importance of judicial diversity in determining race and sex discrimination cases.

***A white male who HASNT LIVED THAT LIFE...that is the key to the whole statement...not the fact that she said Latina woman or White male...GOP just looks and sounds dumber and dumber every time they open their mouths.

Gingrich? Why is this disgraced ex politician even allowed bandwidth? What makes him think he's in a position to demand anything?

I am so sick of the privileged class whining about racism. It's enough to make me vomit. Whine when you get turned down for a job, have sales people follow you around stores, are harassed by the cops (maybe even frisked), can't buy a house in a certain neighborhood or when one of your relatives is hung from a tree ALL solely because of the color of your skin. Or whine when everyone assumed you got a job offer, like Judge Sotomayor, ONLY due to your race and not because your VERY qualified. Just shut up!!

I really think that Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh should team up... as the true leaders of the Party of "No"... and present their findings to the Senate Judiciary Committee. I'm sure the Senators would then more fully understand where the twits, I mean twitters (or tweaters) are coming from.

Sotomayor's comment was simply a statement of experience trumping race. She pointed out that a minority with a substantial amount of wisdom is going to come to a better conclusion than someone of the majority culture who does not have the same. Therefore, race is irrelevant in terms of qualifications. Once again, these people are wresting words and intentions to discredit someone unfairly. It seems that anytime you mention race in this country you're labeled a "racist." She's a solid choice, and even the Republicans on their most "fair" and "impartial" days can see it. Try again, Newt.

What an idiot he is. Sonya Sotomayor is just telling women not to settle. A white man is not ALWAYS the grand prize. (Some are. Newt and Rush are booby prizes.)

it's nice to see that the republicans have turned a corner and are reaching out to become a more inclusive party - that rebranding effort sure did pay off.

    NOT.

If you take race out of her comment (which has been quoted out of context by all the people who are 'outraged' – BTW- outraged just to garner attention)
her comment is I hope someone with a richness of experience would be able to make a better judgment than somewhat without that.

wow, so racist. What?!?!? where is the racism? these people are grasping a straws. There are other things more radical about her than this quote, things that are out of line with both major parties, which makes her relatively middle of the road. Which is where the SC should be anyway.

This coming from a womanizer. Does the GOP expect the Liberal president to pick a conservitive nominee ? Newt is nobody, maybe a potential presidental candidate in 20010 or 16 but a nobody right now. I know liberals bashed justice Roberts when he was nominated but come on thats life. Besides I believe that Obama has all the votes he needs and once the second senator from Minnesota is swarn in thats makes it a fillibuster proof case, right !!!! Go away GOP and let the people who won the election run the office they won fair and square. I guess its hard when you lost your power in 2006 and 2008 but live with it, this is a new dawn and the people have spoken.

So Rush and Gingrich are calling Sonia a racist? I would like to know what planet these white, fat, angry old men are really from? We are waiting from Darth Cheney for parrot that same line. I do believe that these men are very very angry and hate filled for anyone that is not just like them. That only shows the state of their minds. Keep it up guys, your party won't be much longer the way you are behaving. News Flash: YOU LOST THE ELECTION! Obama is not GW Bush and I thank God for that.
I read that racist comment as: "I'm starting to get worried that she may someday sit in judgment of me". Republicans are so repulsive individuals. It is no wonder that so many Americans reject their hatred.

  17. change we can believe in

I think Newt & Rush should be given a basic skills test. They have dyslexia. Sotomayor did not say what Newt tweeted, had she said that I would probably agree that she should withdraw. These idiots so conveniently leave off the last few words of her statement "who hasn't lived the life." I think that statement has merit. No one can tell or relate to a particular race, gender, or anyone else of a certain demographic of their experiences but them. It’s simple, if you are married and need counseling would you go to someone who has never been married? How could they relate?

Isn't possible she was simply stating that a latina woman and a white man may have differing views on certain topics? That would only be natural.

White men can come to better conclusions regarding experiences in lives of white men.
Women can come to better conclusions regarding experiences in lives of women.
Latinos can come to better conclusions regarding experiences in lives of Latinos.
African-Americans can come to better conclusions regarding experiences of African-Americans.
Anyone can take one of my statements here, and prove that I am a racist, or a sexist. Only an intelligent person will take all these statements together and see that I am fair, balanced and speak the truth.

Gingrich is entitled to his opinion. Where was he when Justice Thomas pulled the race card with his "This is a modern day lynching" when questioned about Anita Hill or Limbaugh's playing the song "Barrack the magic negro"?

Hypocrissy is why the Repbulican party is at 21% approval rating.
