Gingrich: Sotomayor 'racist,' should withdraw nomination

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Gingrich tweeted that Sotomayor is a 'latina woman racist.'"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rush Limbaugh isn't the only one calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Newt Gingrich is, too - and he's demanding that Obama's pick to the Supreme Court withdraw her nomination.

On Twitter, Gingrich pointed to a line in Sotomayor's 2001 speech to a Hispanic group in Berkeley that has drawn fire from some conservatives.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," Sotomayor said in that speech, describing how life experience can inform judicial opinions.

On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: "Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.' new racism is no better than old racism."

Moments later, he followed up with the message: "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs responded to Gingrich's criticism at Wednesday's briefing.

"I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they've decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation," Gibbs said.

As a female Latina in a white, male dominated world, I am personally offended that somebody like Sotomayor would make a statement like that. Racism is bad, period.

Sotomayor needs to withdraw her nomination if that kind of reverse racism is what she is all about... And judging by her vote in the Ricci case, it is.

Why do the repugnicans leave out the fact the Judge Sotomayor sided on the side of the New Haven people? There stepping into dangerous territory trying to make her out to be some far left-wing extremist, especially when her record shows that she's sided with her republican counterpart about 95% of the time when decisions were made across a panel.

Not to mention there are no truly radical decisions she's made as a judge. The Obama people did their homework on this one... If it’s a fight the right wants, I would tell them to reconsider.

The RNC is doomed... [Rush, Newt & Cheney have at it boys...]

While I don't think she is racist, I do think she will simply brush off many complaints brought against hispanics as "you won't understand". I like the Obama administration in general but liberals need to stop following the administration blindly and follow principles and not people. She's a poor choice. Just admit it and move on. Find another hispanic woman, there are plenty in this world without their own hispanic favorability thrown in the mix.

Newt and Limbaugh need to put it to rest. Does this guy realize that by creating all this loud talking about NOTHING... all he is doing is distracting their party from the focus of real issues they should be concerned with like re branding the GOP, Rather than trying to pick at President Obama's pick for supreme court justice why not try to come up with a decent plan for 2016 to get their party back on track and stop wasting time with loud talking about nothing.

any one that listens to Newt or Fat man Rush should have their heads examined. Newt is the same guy that voted to impeach Clinton while at the exact same time he was having an affair with some one half his age. He is and will always be a joke. If he is the future of the Republican party the GOP is in big trouble

Minorities will never be equal to white men until they stop their racist remarks toward white men. Minorities need to be able to stand on their own merits or they should sit down and shut up.

I have no respect for Gingrich, he is like Rush Limbaugh. All mouth and no action. If they are such experts, they need to work with people to find some solutions, answers to the problems, do something about them. They need to get out there to find out what is going on and to get their hands dirty from hard labor and working to make life better for everyone instead of being so lazy. Wagging their tongues and doing nothing does not accomplish anything, only nothing. Maybe, if they would work up a little sweat, they would lose a few pounds.

well, white man racist politician named Newt Gingrich should SHUT UP, but he'll keep talking, and along with his friends Rush and Dick, continue to plunge his party further into the byss. They're REALLY grasping at straws on this...

OMG! "Dick, Newt and Rush"- what a great name for a sitcom!

Hmmmm ... An adulterer calling a woman a racist. Who ya gonna believe? That is like Rush calling someone else fat or a drug addict.

Or Cheney saying that torture is not torture.

Or the Fox Channel informing us all that WMD had been found in Iraq, scrolling that message across their screen for days, and then suddenly withdrawing the comment when the Army said there are NO WMD in Iraq.

Interesting group these Republicans. If there are NO FACTSa, they make up a few.

This pick was a stroke of genius from Big Daddy O! Not only did he pick a great judge, but he picked one that the GOP will destroy themselves opposing. When the few GOP Sen.. vote for her they will be blacklisted, the base will go monkeys putting her down causing many Spanish people to leave the party, and women will not be able to say Husain has not done anything for them. Great pick on the merits because she can do the job, and politically because it will send the GOP out a whack. Get well soon GOP. No wonder Rush calls him the Messiah or is it because he still thinks The One is Muslim?

As a white male, albeit somewhat younger and I certainly hope much, much more liberal than 'Newt', I would be very surprised if Ms Sotomayor meant anything even remotely akin to the sentiments that are being ascribed to her by the right-wing media and talking heads. I would imagine that what she meant was that those who may have experienced a less privleged trip through life and have had to exert a substantially greater effort to achieve success might be expected to have a more balanced and possibly more sympathetic perspective when reviewing any given set of circumstances and then forming an opinion.

Well, what will we hear from the "Newt" next? One thing for sure, it won't be about family values. Anyone that agrees with Limbaugh is so far out of the main stream that it makes no difference what he/she says anyway!

Yawn. Here we go, hold on. The GOP will do ANYTHING to derail ANY nomination. They seem to have nothing better to do.

It's too bad that a single sentence uttered years ago would torpedo a nomination, but that is the political culture that we're in. Newt is right about the reverse case; a white person saying something like that wouldn't stand a chance.

Newt Gingrich is the biggest hypocrite of them all. Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh need to crawl back into the hole they came from. I'm a republican and lately all I can do is hang my head in shame. I'm ashamed of my own party.

Why is Newt still talking?? Is he not aware that he lost his re-election bid 10+ years ago and doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting the Republican nomination for President.

No one actually cares what Gingrich has to say. He needs to GO AWAY. Rebranding the GOP with an old has-been isn't a very good strategy.

He would call on anyone Obama nominated to withdraw. Rush and Newt are 2 peas in a pod, and 2 I hope remain in the spotlight as the Republican's Leading men. No doubt that would keep the Dems in power for a very long time. If this is the best they have, they are totally washed up as a party. GOOD!

Mr. Gingrich, when will you learn that only minorities and/or the left can call people racist. Anything a convservative, Republican, white, intelligent person says will always be construed as racist. Yet a person on the left says the same thing, and they are viewed as forward thinkers.

Why are the rules always different for minorities than for whites?
Newt is right...if a white man said that about a Latina woman....he would be media bashed right out of the nomination.

Why are the rules different for her? and why is Mr. Gibbs continually making excuses or jokes about somthing so very important?
