Gibbs says no slight meant to Nancy Reagan

(CNN) - The White House meant no disrespect toward Nancy Reagan when it failed to invite the former first lady and vigorous supporter of embryonic stem cell research to a bill signing ceremony on the subject, press secretary Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.

"I think she speaks in real personal terms about the issue," Gibbs told reporters. "And I think her candor and her courage have been heartening and we certainly meant no slight to her whatsoever."

On Monday, Vanity Fair published an interview with Reagan on its Web site in which she suggested the Obama administration missed an opportunity by not inviting her to witness the president sign the bill allowing federal funds to be directed toward stem cell research - a policy Reagan has long promoted despite objections from many in the Republican Party.

"I would have gone, and you know I don't like to travel," she told the magazine. "Politically, it would have been a good thing for him to do. Oh well, nobody's perfect. He called and thanked me for working on it. But he could have gotten more mileage out of it."

Gibbs' comments also come the same day Reagan attended a White House ceremony as President Obama signed legislation authorizing the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission.

She'll also attend the unveiling of a new statue of President Reagan Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda and then share a private White House lunch with Michelle Obama.

Obama issued an apology to Reagan earlier this year after joking in a press conference that she held séances during her years in the White House - an apparent reference to reports she consulted with astrologists when her husband was president.

    Teleprompter of the U.S.A,

Are you saying there are many UAW union workers who are millionares and are responsible for the GM bankruptcy?

Geee, I didn't know that union members were so cruel as to decide to only make gas guzzlers and relly on "Americans will buy only American cars so to heck with being efficient" ideas to further their companies.

Oh, wait, that's right, union members were being dwindled down while the execs who made all the decisions regarding these things.

    Moron.

I'm surprised Nancy Reagan didn't know she wouldn't be invited. Didn't she consult her astrologist?

I am no fan of Obama, but I believe that not inviting her was a oversight. It could have also been because she admits she does not like to travel, she is recovering from a fall, and she is elderly. Either way, it was not done for political reasons or to "punish" her in any way.

As for her comments about Obama getting more mileage out of it, let it be. She was not being a "rethuglicant". (get real). She was being practical. Do you honestly believe that any politician does anything for other than political reasons? Yes, there are a few examples, but not that many. They have their own agendas just like the rest of Americans do.

Firing the Air Traffic Controllers worked out well.
Unions are the downfall of the US.
Stupid lazy non motivated people guaranteed a job.
Laid off for 2 years collecting 90% of their pay.
Yep the job bank was a real winner for the auto companies.
You cant close a plant, you cant fire anyone.
Yep that is a great way to conduct business.
Everyone else has to work hard except for union workers.
It is our next socialist step. Hopefully they drive GM into the ground.
No one will buy cars from them.

Why won't Obama show us exactly how that money was spent? I don't remember any liberal squealing like a stuck pig when other liberals were claiming Bush and Cheney were making Haliburton rich and making their big oil buddies rich.

And I especially love the name calling. Why don't you call liberals who make all these attacks on Bush "moron"?

    Hypcorisy, thy name is liberal.

No one forced anyone to buy a Suburban or large trucks for that matter.
Unlike Barack who will force his will upon all, people in the US are allowed to buy what ever cars they want.
If you call the dealers and look at the reports the Economy cars are piled up and no is buying them.
Tell your boy barack to start drilling for oil and stop complaining about gas prices.
He will try but when it comes down to it people bought the cars they wanted not what could or would be forced upon them by Baracks Socialist Party.

OK for you right wing nuts who dont understand, Curly Sue was a cute little girl who couldn't read, but memorized how to spell a few long words so she could impress and then con people.

    Thus:

Dennis Miller, really dumb, memorized a few long words, trying to sound smart, and con people at the same time.

@ MathewDetroit, who said "This did not in any way stop private business from funding research"

Give it up dude. The limitation to existing stem cell lines was a practical ban on the research. For stem cell research to be effective and successful, you cannot be limited to a very very narrow line of genetic material. Bush was aware of this and that's why he did it. And the talking point about not stopping private business from funding it is another practical nullity...99% of the time, research of that magnitude and expense does NOT happen without government grant money. The Bush smoke screen smelled like farts and you know it and, despite repeating the above talking points, you enjoyed it...secretly laughing that Bush had, for all practical purposes, completely stopped stem cell research in such a backhanded manner.
