Palin: Defense cuts are 'a sign of weakness'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/06/08/art.spalin0608.gi.jpg caption="Palin is in the middle of a low-key trip to the East Coast. "](CNN) - In her strongest public remarks to date on the matter, Sarah Palin admonished the Obama adminstration on Saturday for proposing cuts to Alaska's missile defense network, a move she said would leave her state and the rest of the country vulnerable in the case of a future attack.

The administration cuts, which were announced by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in April and would be enacted in the next fiscal year, would trim $1.2 billion from the Pentagon's missile defense programs. The expansion of a missile field in Fort Greely, Alaska would be halted under the proposed budget.

"Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," Palin said during a celebration in upstate New York honoring native son William Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska in 1867 as Secretary of State. Video of the speech was posted by the Web site "Conservatives4Palin."

Palin said Alaska's missile defense system is now more vital than ever, particularly in the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests. She said a missile fired from North Korea could easily reach Alaska and other parts of the country.

"And yet, Washington thinks it's best now to actually cut defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars," she said. "Now that is an odd priority there."

Palin said she will "argue with every ounce of my being for Washington to pay attention."

"That is not always easy, but it is right," she said. "It is clear to many that some of our priorities as a nation are kind of reversed, and it is my imperative, and it should be all of our imperative, that we get our government priorities right, because if they are misdirected, obviously America is going turn into something that we don't recognize."

At another moment during her speech, the former vice presidential candidate got a cheer from the crowd by repeating a line of attack that was frequently used against Obama during last year's presidential campaign.

Palin explained that Alaskans believe in "the roots of our country, so deep, so strong."

"They're what we need to cling to," she said. "Clinging to, you know, that includes our clinging to our second amendment rights, and our faith in God. Many of us do cling to that strong faith in God."

She is right and all of you know it. You are so in love with Obama you don't even think about the danger. Grow up and think for yourself. This is not a Republican or a Democratic issue. This is the safety of our country!

It has been nearly three decades since Reagan proposed SDI. Guess what, we're no closer to that then we are to a car powered by water. How many trillion dollars will we end up spending on this non-starter of a defense system in the name of feeling "strong".

She forgets our roots also include slavery and women can't vote. I hate this constant retoric from conservatives about 'going back'. Our country was founded on blood and oppression.. we've come a LONG way.. and we have a long way to go. I think Obama has our priorities as a country right on target.. repairing the damage the Bush admin. has done to us all. She just want's more of the same and her method of trying to get it is the same too... 'try and scare people'. This woman has zero common sense.

"A sign of weakness"? That just sounds like more of the macho, Cowboys n' Indians talk that we've heard during the past 8yrs of GW Bush's administration. More scare tactics and political posturing on Palin's part. I bet if you were to ask her to find North Korea on a globe, she'd say, "I'll have to get back to ya on that one, you betcha! *wink*... " Because she certainly didn't know about anything outside of Alaska prior to being vetted for VP during the past election. Her various interviews say it all. And now, 6 months later, we're supposed to listen to her opinion over the opinion of men and women who have been protecting our nation for decades?! Get real, Palin. Go crawl into a hole somewhere and zip it.

Palin's attitude personified the reason why the rest of the world didn't like us. Pure brutish ignorance and juvenile childishness. Respect begets respect. Nothing is solved with brutish force and violence. Maybe Palin thinks that the US can use nuclear weapons to annihilate any country that dares to confront us. That kind of thinking is antiquated and obsolete nowadays.

Palin has no business being in politics. The right wing fanatics who love this person, do so because they are all at the bottom of the education ladder. Let's face it, Palin barely has a college education and it shows in her lack of understanding of the world outside of Wasilla.

Russia has yet to fly into Alaskan airspace but she's worried that North Korea will suddenly attack that frozen chunk of America? If Palin understands geography, Canada is behind Alaska, and I doubt the Koreans are heading to the frozen tundra.

I understand that Palin is trying to stay relevant. I understand that she feels since she leads the oompaloompa wing of the GOP, that she has to speak her mind. But she has little intellect, little wisdom and a whole buncha hypocrisy.

It's best for everyone, if she just goes away.

So while her husband is touting an organization devoted to seceding from the U.S., she talks about how strong Alaska's American roots are.

And of course she wants the Pentagon pork. After of decades of having Alaska be the ultimate welfare state, she can't figure out how to pay the state's bills if they'd actually have to stand on their own two feet.

    Run, Sarah, run.

Palin? Who is she again? Is she still in the news?

But seriously, do Republicans understand anything besides missiles. America already spends a huge amount on defense. Do they know how to answer anything without violence or a military strike?

How long will it take us to leave the Bush legacy of "shoot first and ask questions later" behind us?

It's obvious North Korea sees Obama for his weakness so that's why they're conducting constant missile tests. It's very obvious that Sarah Palin cares more for this country while Obama only cares about his popularity in Europe.

Incoming missile defense is a fantasy that doesn't work. Not one "Star Wars" test has been successful under Reagan, Clinton or either Bush. Why? There are only a few seconds time to identify an incoming missile; then begin countdown for launch of an intercept rocket. While the incoming missile target moves erractically due to atmospheric turbulence. Like hitting a bee with a rifle from a mile away.

Palin doesn't want to accept stimulus money for the private sector, but is upset because pork-barrel military spending is ending. At least give Palin credit as Governor for defending federal funds she feels her state needs. She objects to the "strings" attached to fed funds. I guess she prefers the old strings she knows to new ones. rel

Who is this? Oh yeah, it's that lady from that hilarious movie where she and the old man try to run for office. It was this great comedy. She's the one that thought she can see Russia from her porch, that was priceless. Oh yeah, she's also the moralist with the knocked up daughter, man that movie was funny. Please, please GOP put her up in 2012 for a wacky sequal. This time they should cast Cheney as the dipstick sidekick!

As long as the media makes every sneeze, comment, and idle uneducated thought she makes headline news there is no reason for her to stop seeking the limelight and focus on the troubles of her own state.

She's Liz Cheney with a job.

She ignores how Bush's policies got us into this mess. Perhaps flexing our strength without cooperating with the world doesn't always work. The age of the US controlling everything is over. We need to know where to put our energies. Putting monies into protecting us while not solving the N Korea problem at its roots seems a typical Republican thing – as long as we don't get hurt, it's ok for others in the world to be hur.t OK for NK to need to stop NKorea from having nukes. Our invasion of Iraq has sapped our strength to deal with the much greater issues of Iran and N Korea. Bush flexed muscles but was far from smart. Obama is at least smart.

Let's see, Obama responds to the first North Korean ICBM launch with a speech on anti-proliferation. He responds to additional North Korean launches and a nuclear detonation with additional speeches and defense cuts, announces that Iran has a right to go nuclear, helps UAE with their nuclear program while giving us wind turbines and solar panels. Yep, he sounds like one tough guy to me!

If we are spending money on anything right now it should be our defense and not wasting the trillions of dollars on the garbage suggested by Obama. Between Palin and Obama only one apparently has a brain, and it certainly is not Obama!

Palin wants Washington to pay attention? How can anyone pay attention to her when she opens her mouth. I wish she would stay on her front porch and watch Russia.

Yes, we must spend more on Defense for Alaska, otherwise Russia may take our precious resources such as Caribou, snow and nothingness that Alaska contains.

I thought that the administration took their lead from Ms. Palin. After all, she said all she had to do was look out her window and 'You betcha, there is Putin....!!!'. Now that is a missle defense system that is worth copying...

BTW – when did Sarah become relevant ??

Apparently Palin doesn't know that "defense" spending is "government" spending, I guess she thinks they come from different sources. Maybe she should look that up when she's not to busy watching Russia from her house.
