Palin: Defense cuts are 'a sign of weakness'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/06/08/art.spalin0608.gi.jpg caption="Palin is in the middle of a low-key trip to the East Coast. "](CNN) - In her strongest public remarks to date on the matter, Sarah Palin admonished the Obama adminstration on Saturday for proposing cuts to Alaska's missile defense network, a move she said would leave her state and the rest of the country vulnerable in the case of a future attack.

The administration cuts, which were announced by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in April and would be enacted in the next fiscal year, would trim $1.2 billion from the Pentagon's missile defense programs. The expansion of a missile field in Fort Greely, Alaska would be halted under the proposed budget.

"Reducing Alaska's defense readiness in these perilous times is a show of weakness, it is not a sign of strength," Palin said during a celebration in upstate New York honoring native son William Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska in 1867 as Secretary of State. Video of the speech was posted by the Web site "Conservatives4Palin."

Palin said Alaska's missile defense system is now more vital than ever, particularly in the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests. She said a missile fired from North Korea could easily reach Alaska and other parts of the country.

"And yet, Washington thinks it's best now to actually cut defense spending in Alaska by hundreds of millions of dollars," she said. "Now that is an odd priority there."

Palin said she will "argue with every ounce of my being for Washington to pay attention."

"That is not always easy, but it is right," she said. "It is clear to many that some of our priorities as a nation are kind of reversed, and it is my imperative, and it should be all of our imperative, that we get our government priorities right, because if they are misdirected, obviously America is going turn into something that we don't recognize."

At another moment during her speech, the former vice presidential candidate got a cheer from the crowd by repeating a line of attack that was frequently used against Obama during last year's presidential campaign.

Palin explained that Alaskans believe in "the roots of our country, so deep, so strong."

"They're what we need to cling to," she said. "Clinging to, you know, that includes our clinging to our second amendment rights, and our faith in God. Many of us do cling to that strong faith in God."

I think we should all take notice–for surely Gov. Palin is far, far, far more qualified to direct national security than someone like Secretary Gates and the Pentagon staff. God knows she has a wealth of experience in this arena and after all, she knows how to shoot moose-which bodes well for Alaska's security against North Korea and Russia–let alone an attack from Canada!

Please go away Sarah.... we really can't bare you any longer. Please, just go way and leave politics to those with intelligence.

I think that Palin has it all wrong.
In all my travels around the world as a surveyor have I never been at a place or met people who are unfriendly when you wave at them.
And since Palin can see Russia from her state, she should be waving at them to, so they become friendly and if she waves long and loud enough the Koreans might get it to.

Is the media keeping Palin in the news to ensure a permanent Democrat Majority in every branch of government? Or is it just obvious to everyone that Republicans put this country in the position we're in today and there isn't a Republican with a good idea, and apparently there never was.

God, I want to see Sarah Palin butt naked giving a speach about issues that are important to U.S. Americans and in South of Africa and the Iraqui people over there, and then talking some more about taking the country back over here, and the Russians and Canadian threat over there, and so discuss Obama beach and the trifles of his unpopular decisions which are hurting the U.S. Americans there yonder. And I would love for her to give that speach butt naked but pretended as if she is fully dressed.

Thank you there and also, so...

It's amazing that this folksy hick has reared her head again. Why don't you with all of Alaska' (rich) resources build a missile system yourself with alaska savings account( socialist account). You just don't get it. You didn't look like the President and Michelle walking down the street, You looked like Micky mouse and goofy with all the Disney crowd cheering you on.r

So let's bash Obama for overspending, but call him week when he stops a program in her state, a program left over from a cold war mentality. What a hypocritical twit.

Alaska isn't an atrategic location like D.C. They don't need missile defense-who's gonna bomb and for what?

Having morons, like Sarah Palin, in prominent positions is a sign of weakness. Political grandstanding for 2012 helps no one except the selfish governor. If you're a patriotic American, jump on board to help your President save the country after the last one nearly destroyed it.

This phony witch hasn't got it that her 15 minutes are up. I hope by some miracle that seh runs against the POTUS in 2012. I want to see a solid 62-38 trouncing of the gop once and for all.

These guys haven't had a new idea since Eisenhower.

Somebody please tell Palin her 15 minutes of fame were over long ago. She now needs to focus on her parenting skills. One teenage daughter who got knocked up and a son who had a choice of going to jail or the Army. I'm surprised none of the other presidential contenders have been heard from as much as she has, most of whom were tremendously brighter with more leadership skills than she has. CNN, please, no more attention to Palin

I wish the world was a kinder and gentler place, but it is not. In N. Korea, and many other places in the world life is cheap, and people are an expendable commodity A strong defense is an unpleasant necessity of a strong nation. If you weaken this defense history will tell you that there is always a predator nation waiting in the wings to profit from your demise. Don't belittle Ms. Palin for doing her job as a patriot and a citizen. Your cowardly comments that belittle her intelligence show just how out of touch you really are. I have accumulated 4 college degree's down through the years and they mean nothing. Any mule with enough money and time can learn the right tricks to receive a diploma. Real intelligence is knowing when to shut your mouth and just listen.

Sarah Palin is an ignorant ass. She has absolutely ZERO foreign policy experience. You might as well be taking opinions from Mickey Mouse. Why is this imbecilic given a soapbox?

Why do we need missiles? Just post "our little maverick" on her back porch with her moose rifle. Wink, wink!

There is something quite strange - and very laughable - about Sarah Palin questioning Barack Obama's priorities. Didn't she just try to turn down federal funding for energy initiatives in her state? The one where people are freezing and starving?

Gov. Palin represents the worst America has to offer the world. I wish she would land a cushy job on Fox News and stay the hell out of politics. She's an EMBARRASSMENT!!

Why is everyone so hard on Sarah. She represents everything that the womens rights movement stands for, (except abortion). When was the last time that dialogue and speech brought peace. Just look at the Clinton administration and North Korea. What a waste of time and resources.

Now Gov. Palin feels we need more guns and missiles and yet she fails to understand that the systems that control all these defenses are being hacked into by foreign agents. She fails ti understand that we need a more high tech geek force to maintain our systems in an uncompromised condition. She fails to understand that we need more people trained in foreign languages so we can communicate with, intercept and understand many of the languages being spoken today. I guess Gov. Palin fails to understand that a show of strength is not always demonstrated by military force. I think the Gov. opening her mouth is a sign of weakness. It shows that she cannot keep her mouth shut.

All of the sudden North Korea is a priority for Palin. Perhaps its because the weather has been exceptional in Alaska lately and she happened to get a glimpse of North Korea. One wonders, however, how she could possibly see North Korea seeing as though Russia is in the way most of the time.
