Government unveils 10 new stimulus program projects

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/10/art.getty.money.jpg caption="The next phase of the $787 billion economic stimulus program was launched Monday."]

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama launched the next phase of his $787 billion economic stimulus program Monday with a package of projects that he said would create or save 600,000 jobs.

The 10 projects include expanding health facilities, improving airports and highways, building new military facilities, funding education jobs, hiring or keeping law enforcement officers, starting new rural waste and water systems, improving medical centers for military veterans, enhancing the cleanup of 20 federal Superfund sites, working on national parks, and creating summer youth jobs.

The "Road map to Recovery" package is part of the blueprint for the second 100 days of the economic stimulus program signed into law on February 17. In the first 100 days, the program created or saved 150,000 jobs and designated $135 billion in funding, according to a White House news release. It was not immediately clear if the funding figure included the projects announced Monday.

"We have a long way to go on our road to recovery but we are going the right way," Obama said in the news release. He called for more progress that "American people see in their own lives," adding: "Surely and steadily, we will turn this economy around."

Further details of the new package will be available starting Monday afternoon at WhiteHouse.gov/Recovery, the White House news release said. The Web site for the stimulus program is http://www.recovery.gov.

The stimulus package has drawn political criticism from Republicans who complain it is too expensive and taking too long to achieve results.

Vice President Joe Biden said the purpose of the second phase is to generate tangible progress.

"We're going to get more dollars out the door, more shovels into the ground and more money into the pockets of workers and families who need it most," he said in the news release.

UGH! STOP SPENDING BORROWED MONEY! STOP PRINTING MONEY.

I have never seen so much irresponsible spending. We need to vote this president and this congress out of office. We need a 3rd party NOW! Bush spent money like a crazy man and now Obama is doing even more deficit spending! The "change" we are getting is crazier than Bush. Anyone who votes for more deficit spending should be voted out of office. If Obama signs any more spending bills he should be impeached!!!!

The republicans will do everything they can possibly do to obstruct the presidents initiatives.

Sqealing like stuck pigs and unleashing the radio and cable talk show cartoon characters to bad mouth anything that may be helpful to struggling middle class.

The GOP and Al Qeada want to see the president and the US fail.

You've got some governors(Palin, Sanford, Jindal) criticizing the stimulus bill, yet their states need the money. What they fail to realize is that recovery is a process. I'm sure the stimulus money will do what it was intended to do in the coming months ahead. Be patient! We didn't get into this mess overnight and we won't get out of it overnight.

Quick Barry! Move fast! Spend fast!
Better ram your failed socialist experiments down our throats now, because 18 months from now you won't have the opportunity.

The weekend elections for the European Parliament have the winds of change written all over them.

The EP elections are foreshadowing what's headed to the US Congress in 2010. And it's not going to good for big spenders of any stripe, Dems or Republicans.

Just think, we might, just maybe if we're lucky, finally get constitutional amendments for term limits, balanced budgets and a flat tax.

If it's possible this president will make a poor economic environment worse. Never mind, CNN & MSNBC will be there to cheer him forward or backward depending on your view.

Yes, I can see all the liberal Democrats (oinkers) with their hand out looking to loot the treasury.

Conservatives are no better but they are out of power which means less swill for their pork projects.

The stimulus package is creating all of these "projects". What happens to these new jobs when the project is over? Obama celebrated all of the jobs the stimulus bill for the graduating police officers in Ohio. It's well known now, that at the end of this year, those officers will lose their jobs. So, will that count against all of these wonderful jobs that are being created or saved? Or will the loss of jobs be swept under the carpet?

    150K jobs?

Oh... I think he's counting the bailouts... that's not part of the stim.
Now that we own banks, GM, Chrysler, etc

He is digging one big hole... and paying off a lot of union construction guys to do it... unless you think it's someone else working on infrastructure

Democratic Party = rob hard working, honest, responsible Americans and give their money to selfish, lazy, mean, hateful, angry liberal Democrat takers.

It is not like lib takers are greatful, they actually believe that someone else's money earned by their own blood, sweat, and tears, rightfully belongs to the lazy lib that sits at home, watches judge shows, files frivilous lawsuits, gets a check from the government, and put lives at risk when they drive their car.

There are many what we would consider poor people in the South and Midwest who don't have much, but believe in personal responsiblity and support themselves and their families. They would never take from others. They don't care about cars, houses or other material wealth, they are rich on morals, values, and family. They have so much move than the richest lib hollywood slob or democrook politican will ever be able to obtain. I love how they are "poor" but happier each day of their lives than the hateful rich lib will ever be.

    STOP .... SPENDING.... MONEY!!!

Obama has moved from "irresponsible" to OBSCENE. In 140 days Obama has more than TRIPLED the debt that took Bush 8 years to accumulate.

    STOP SPENDING MONEY!

    Alfred,

Sorry sir, this Veteran would like the military hospitals to be able to take care of our wounded.

I'll take the Dem's spending on the military over what the Rep's never gave when they held both the House and Senate for six years under the Rep. President Bush, Jr.

We always understood that the Recovery plan was a two year plan to create and/or save jobs, but many Americans are impatient. This roll-out will hopefully allow them to see that there is a recovery in progress and that the Recovery Plan will indeed deliver what was promised.

Non of you all were crying about the spending when it was for wars, building prisons for torture, or for tax cuts for the wealthy and big business. Now that it is going to help rebuild America and help real American's, you can't stand it.

You just can't admit that President Obama is helping the economy and pulling us back from the brink of collapse, where Bush took us. What will you say when President Obama is able to improve healthcare and decrease the cost? Whe he balances the budget in the coming years and pays the deficit we were left down? Which do you hate more, His efforts at peace; or His efforts to restore prosperity for average Americans?

OUR ECONOMY will Continue to Slump. WILL BE EVEN WORST.

The only Remedy to revive our Economy is: END THE WARS IN AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ.

Expenditure on Wars is HUMONGOUS. America will be in POVERTY, if Wars are Not Ended Immediately.

All of this is just more evidence that Obama has no idea what he is doing. The country was more concerned about electing a celebrity than electing a real American with honor and experience during this difficult time. Hopefully 2010 and 2012 change things.

  19. Open Your 3rd Eye

    ATTENTION OBAMA HATERS:

SPENDING IS NOT THE REASON WE HATED BUSH. THESE ARE "SOME" OF THE REASONS:

    1. WAR IN IRAQ
    2. TORTURE
    3. LYING THROUGH HIS TEETH CONSISTENTLY
    4. HE WAS NOT A SMART MAN AT ALL
    5. OIL/GAS PRICES ( BOTH BUSH & CHENEY BENEFITED FROM THE INCREASE)
    6. KATRINA
    7. EXTREME ARROGANCE & NEGLECT TOWARD THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE
    8. DID I MENTION HE WAS A MORON

IN FACT, SPENDING MORE AT HOME INSTEAD OF OVERSEAS AND ON WARS IS SOMETHING WE THE PEOPLE WELCOME. WE WILL GET OURSELVES OUT OF DEBT BY INVESTING IN THE FUTURE- PERIOD-

    PLEASE OPEN-YOUR-MINDS

    ONE NATION-ONE PLANET

THAT GOAL IS NOT SO FRIGHTENING AS LONG AS WE HAVE GOOD LEADERSHIP.

HOWEVER, IF OUR LEADERSHIP IS TAINTED BY SMALL, SELFISH, POWER HUNGRY MEN = WE WILL FAIL

The next phase? What ever happened to the first phase? I thought 9 million homeowners were going to get relief from the government? Last I check it has helped 55,000 homeowners. So my question is.......WHERE IS THE MONEY?

I need an explanation. Of the 600,000 jobs Obama wants to take credit for creating or "saving", how many jobs will actually be "created." and how many be "saved?" Regarding the latter number, what is the tool of measurement telling us that these are "saved" jobs?

Well Gary...what do you think we should do?
I love how republicans and third party wiz kids sit and shout about ALL THE GOVERNMENT SPENDING but yet come up with no alternative. I believe it was this president who challenged folks to come up with an alternative to get out of this mess and he would consider it. So unless you have an idea that might work, you should sit back and watch us come out of this recession stronger nation!
And since you've forgotten already...this president's approval rating is still pretty high considering only 3% of the stimulus was put into effect!

First of all, j.p. The EP elections are not a sign of things to come in America speaking the conservative message has lost badly in the past two elections. Secondly, u need to spend money to improve your ailing economy because we the consumers aren't spending. And third, enough with the socialism BS....if you aainst government aid then when you reach the time in your life when you can collect social security, please politely say thanks but no thanks and same with Medicare! They are socialist programs and therefore u should not collect any help from them! And speaking of spending like a mad man, at least the spending by president Obama is justified and he's spending it to help the US economy not on Iraq and bringing "democracy and peace" to the middle east (Which was a major lie)
