Poll: Lower marks for Obama on spending, deficit

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Overall, Americans approve of how President Obama is handling his job, but less than half the country agrees with his approach to battling the deficit and controlling federal spending, according to a new poll.
Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president, according to the Gallup poll released Monday.
On the deficit, the public seems split, but the trend shows a general souring towards Obama's economic agenda: 48 percent now disapprove of the president's approach to dealing with the deficit, while 46 percent approve - a statistical split. Fifty-one percent disapprove of his approach to reining in federal spending, while 45 percent approve.
The Gallup survey of 1,105 adults was conducted May 29-31 and carries a possible sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
If anyone had any better ideas, I sure didn't hear them.
Holding pat and doing nothing would have only been worse.
It's easy to criticize, but not nearly as easy to come up with solutions.
I still have more trust in Obama and his methods than I ever had with Bush. Bush and his cabal did more damage to this country than good. Good riddance to them all.
It's only been 5 months, it will turn around and our country will get back on the right track. Patience – after all it took the Bush admin 8 years to reak their havoc – then they walked away in typical loser bush fashion.

He's taken a bad situation and made it unbelievably worse. I'm old enough (50) that I won't see the long term rmifaction of his economics, but my kids surely will.
Gee, no one cared that Bush drove us into the situation with deregulation and off the books appropriations for the IRaq war. Obama brought the off the books Iraq war appropriations ONTO the budget and that is why the deficit looks so freaking horrible.
You neocon rightwing nut Republicans need to put the blame where it belongs – on the BUSH DICTATORSHIP OF THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.
Looks like the honeymoon is almost over. These numbers are pretty much in line with the early term approval ratings of previous presidents (including Georgie-boy). The American people want our leaders to do well no matter who they are. It will be a while before we get any meaningful poll numbers.
I wonder how popular BO will be when the people figure out that we actually have to repay all this debt.

Since my first remarks were moderated out of existance because they mocked CNN, I would guess. Let me try again. The numbers are much worse thatn will ever be reflected in a liberaly biased press. They will act surprised at the next election and try to figure out where all of these negative feelings are coming from.

America, has got to let go of it's love for the celebrity. We have become the American Idol generation. Our President is nothing more than a celebrity and I suppose if that were his job, then yes-high marks indeed, but that's not his job now is it?
I am interested to see how he handles the situation with the reporters in N. Korea. I remember when Nightline started on television. It was because Americans were being held hostage in Iran. I think thses are the types of trials that should determine job approval. I see the economy not really moving yet and gas prices are going up again. I hear about 600,000 jobs that will be created or saved, but what about the 1.5 million that have been lost? This is what defines the job of a President, not how large of a crowd he can draw, not that he can quote the Bible and the Quran in the same speech. I think it is time to stop the 2009 Obama World Tour and start doing the job for which he was elected.
The Beloved Leader's poll numbers should show 100% approval! The fact that his approval is less than 100% is all George Bush's and the Gang of Cheney's fault. I'm just not quite sure how, yet. Help me out, Dems.

I think at least 99% of people who approved president Obama in federal spending will receive couple hundreds from stimulus packet. I could not wait what these people think when all the money from stimulus packet are gone, and unemployment rate raises above 10%.
LISTEN folks to why he is doing certain things and then pay attention to the results. He has been in office since 1/20 , just a litlle over 4 months and there are already positive signs out there. Not for us unemployed people (wrong, even ofr us if you look at Craigslist!), but over all things are moving forward. We're even getting money back from institutions that were helped.
