Poll: Lower marks for Obama on spending, deficit

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/05/18/art.obamacash.gi.jpg caption="Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president."]

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Overall, Americans approve of how President Obama is handling his job, but less than half the country agrees with his approach to battling the deficit and controlling federal spending, according to a new poll.

Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president, according to the Gallup poll released Monday.

On the deficit, the public seems split, but the trend shows a general souring towards Obama's economic agenda: 48 percent now disapprove of the president's approach to dealing with the deficit, while 46 percent approve - a statistical split. Fifty-one percent disapprove of his approach to reining in federal spending, while 45 percent approve.

The Gallup survey of 1,105 adults was conducted May 29-31 and carries a possible sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

If anyone had any better ideas, I sure didn't hear them.

Holding pat and doing nothing would have only been worse.

It's easy to criticize, but not nearly as easy to come up with solutions.

I still have more trust in Obama and his methods than I ever had with Bush. Bush and his cabal did more damage to this country than good. Good riddance to them all.

It's only been 5 months, it will turn around and our country will get back on the right track. Patience – after all it took the Bush admin 8 years to reak their havoc – then they walked away in typical loser bush fashion.

    Press on President Obama.

Polls!! Up and down, that's why they call it a poll. It has only been 4 months. This country was already headed to ruin, thanks to Bush's wanna be war hero legacy as well as his enept failed domestic policies. Thank God that too many people didn't drink the coolaid the Bush admin was serving the past 8 blunderous years.

He's taken a bad situation and made it unbelievably worse. I'm old enough (50) that I won't see the long term rmifaction of his economics, but my kids surely will.

Gee, no one cared that Bush drove us into the situation with deregulation and off the books appropriations for the IRaq war. Obama brought the off the books Iraq war appropriations ONTO the budget and that is why the deficit looks so freaking horrible.

You neocon rightwing nut Republicans need to put the blame where it belongs – on the BUSH DICTATORSHIP OF THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.

Looks like the honeymoon is almost over. These numbers are pretty much in line with the early term approval ratings of previous presidents (including Georgie-boy). The American people want our leaders to do well no matter who they are. It will be a while before we get any meaningful poll numbers.

I wonder how popular BO will be when the people figure out that we actually have to repay all this debt.

Oh, they finally got us now. Failure! Its what the GOP has been hoping and praying for. Its what they are use to and comfortable with. Only problem GOP is that if Big Daddy O fails you loose your trailer. Keep Hope Alive. Pry for Obama not against him.

  7. RNC = DNC = politics as usual

I like seeing all the Obama fans pointing to the "other" polls all the time.

You all remember Gallup, the one the Obama fans said was SOOOO accurate when it was predicting the Obama victory? Gallup, a recognized name in polling and poll research?

You've seen their articles about including cell phones right? There will be at least one cell phone conspriacy comment.

Since my first remarks were moderated out of existance because they mocked CNN, I would guess. Let me try again. The numbers are much worse thatn will ever be reflected in a liberaly biased press. They will act surprised at the next election and try to figure out where all of these negative feelings are coming from.

1………. We are importing more and exporting less. We have a big trade imbalance.

3………. Our Manufacturing jobs are all gone.
4………. Our Iron and Steel industries are all gone.
5………. Our textile industry of North Carolina is all gone.
6………. Our Auto industry is all gone.
7………. We have everything made in China.
8………. We have outsourced to India because of cheap labor.
9………. We are still spending billions on 2 wars. Wars are draining our Economy.
10………. We import nurses from Philippines.

"Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating" What has he done?
America, has got to let go of it's love for the celebrity. We have become the American Idol generation. Our President is nothing more than a celebrity and I suppose if that were his job, then yes-high marks indeed, but that's not his job now is it?
I am interested to see how he handles the situation with the reporters in N. Korea. I remember when Nightline started on television. It was because Americans were being held hostage in Iran. I think thses are the types of trials that should determine job approval. I see the economy not really moving yet and gas prices are going up again. I hear about 600,000 jobs that will be created or saved, but what about the 1.5 million that have been lost? This is what defines the job of a President, not how large of a crowd he can draw, not that he can quote the Bible and the Quran in the same speech. I think it is time to stop the 2009 Obama World Tour and start doing the job for which he was elected.

The Beloved Leader's poll numbers should show 100% approval! The fact that his approval is less than 100% is all George Bush's and the Gang of Cheney's fault. I'm just not quite sure how, yet. Help me out, Dems.

Who made you qualified to say the President is not qualified? At least the President has been working on a number of things to get this country back on track, even though idiots like you can only sit back and criticize.

Uh, as a liberal, I think Obama is the best President ever!!! He's doing things now that are going to make sure I don't have to worry about my mortgage or putting gas in my car.

And of course if he took the GOP approach of being an ostrich in the sand, he'd be crucified too. It's a no-win scenario and there is no way the others guys would have been able to do any better. How do I know this – because the GOP has failed to meet Obama's often-repeated challenge of "If you have a better plan, let's hear it!"

I think at least 99% of people who approved president Obama in federal spending will receive couple hundreds from stimulus packet. I could not wait what these people think when all the money from stimulus packet are gone, and unemployment rate raises above 10%.

LISTEN folks to why he is doing certain things and then pay attention to the results. He has been in office since 1/20 , just a litlle over 4 months and there are already positive signs out there. Not for us unemployed people (wrong, even ofr us if you look at Craigslist!), but over all things are moving forward. We're even getting money back from institutions that were helped.
That shous say something in this short a time!

Obama is NOT doing any damage. He is repairing the damage that was done by 8 years of an inept presidency.

What can you expect for a man that was a jr. senator for a whole 18 months before he ran for president? AND he is still campaigning. I wish he would just stop the speeches and get some work done. Apologizing to half the world, does not count.

He is in so far over his head, that he did not even have the insight to pick a decent V.P. Thank God Obama is young and healty, because I would be scared if I woke up tomorrow and ole' Joe was the President.

Hussein Obama is destroying this country to smithereens. USA is heavily in debt, you have Hussein Obama to thank for adding $1.8 Trillion DEFICIT in less than 100 days in office. For a President, Obama spend more time jetting overseas at taxpayers expense than working at the oval office. If he's not travelling overseas delivering his speech courtesy of TELEPROMPTER, he's travelling all over USA using Airforce One.

Porkulus Bill written by libtards in Congress and signed by Hussein Obama is dragging this country down, we are NOW in depression. Of course there's a decrease of newly umployed, NO MORE EMPLOYEES TO LAYOFF, they bulk of employees were LAIDOFF early part of this year. Even an Obama supporter who campaigned for him, hated Obama now. In fact many people hates Obama. My neighbor with Obama sticker on his bumper, his car was repossessed the other day.

He hates it when I said to him "how's that hope and change workin' fer ya?" He is jobless too! That is POETIC JUSTICE. I've no ounce of sympathy for Obama supporters losing their job, home and car. YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET!

Both halves of the country (pro-Obama and anti-Obama) are in denial.

Pro-Obama people are denying the plan's potential of driving this country even deeper into debt at a much quicker pace than the Bush administration. Anti-Obama people are denying the plan's potential of bringing the economy back where it needs to be.

We don't even know what we're disputing anymore...
