Poll: Lower marks for Obama on spending, deficit

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/05/18/art.obamacash.gi.jpg caption="Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president."]

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Overall, Americans approve of how President Obama is handling his job, but less than half the country agrees with his approach to battling the deficit and controlling federal spending, according to a new poll.

Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president, according to the Gallup poll released Monday.

On the deficit, the public seems split, but the trend shows a general souring towards Obama's economic agenda: 48 percent now disapprove of the president's approach to dealing with the deficit, while 46 percent approve - a statistical split. Fifty-one percent disapprove of his approach to reining in federal spending, while 45 percent approve.

The Gallup survey of 1,105 adults was conducted May 29-31 and carries a possible sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

To Jim: The idiots are the ones out there who voted for Bush and the tried-and-failed voodoo, tinkle-down economic policies of cutting taxes on the wealthy and starting 2 wars with no plan on how to pay for them.

Obama has recognized several way to rebuild our country, including:

    – responsibly re-regulate the financial industry so investment companies keep their gambling-addicted hands off savings institutions' funds
    – make the wealthy pay their fair share (pay 3% more, up from 36% to 39%)
    – invest in our infrastructure that is badly in need of repair
    – create sustainable green jobs here at home
    – close tax loopholes and tax havens
    – regain our standing in the international community so we don't have to shoulder the financial burden of cleaning up the mess we created in Iraq and Afghanistan

People said the same thing about the Clinton Administration too but he managed to cut the deficit, President Obama has alot of the same people working for him too so I have faith that he'll manage to balance the budget in the next few years.

Preach Carlo! I just laugh at all those expecting President Obama to snap his fingers and clean up the disgraceful and unpatriotic mess of the last 2 presidents in less than six months when the others had a decade to rape, pillage, and plunder every aspect of our society morally, emotionally, spiritinally and definitely economically while these "good" Americans stood by with their unflailing support.

What percent agree with how the GOP with their 8 year run put us in the predicament in the first place

I'M a non-partisian person, but I noticed whenever some persons send comments about our previous political leaders they are full of hatred, despising them. It should not be that way,This people serve our country and for me they are just proving what kind of family background they have & how they look at themselves, no dignity at all. You can give a negative comment without hatred at all.Pls have respect to our previous & present leaders so other countries will respect our country & leaders too.

When a new president inherits a 10 plus TRILLION DOLLARS DEBT AND A 1.2 TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT IN THE BUDGET, HOW DOES ANYONE EXPECT HIM TO WORK MIRACLES IN FOUR AND ONE HALF MONTHS.

OBAMA is a president, not a miracle worker. Where was all the talk about massive deficits and debt when Bush was president. Bush inherited a 226 BILLION DOLLAR

Ah, America, the land of instant gratification, lack of patience, expectations beyond reasonable and 'gimme' attitude.
Jesus himself would fail to satisfy the incredibly greedy, childish whining of a lot of our citizens. Maybe that's why no second coming is happening?!

    NOO!!

    Ya don't say!!??

Of course his poll numbers are starting to drop. He is even qualified to wear the suit he puts on everyday, which is still empty even after he puts it on. Its funny how the CNN liberals don't comment much on this yet the ticker on Palin got 307 responses, many hate filled. It's so funny to see how scared the liberals are of Palin and the SHOULD be. I can't wait for 2012!!

You people are so stupid. The economy isnt just going to fixed overnight. Things like that take time. Just wait and you will all feel like idiots for doubting the president. Of course you are so ignorant you will find something else to complain about, like taking his wife out on a date.

People are just waiting to see results impact their lives. Even though 67% of Americans approve of how the Obama Administration is representing and managing our country, anyone who has lost their job or home or in fear of losing their job won't be to happy right now with the economy.

No matter what the 'plan' actually is. Americans are spoiled with 'instant' everything, but reversing a recession doesn't happen instantly. This recession was 8 years in the making by the Bush Administration.

However, rational thinking people understand that it always takes longer to clean up a mess than it takes to create it in the first place.

But again, the Obama Administration beat the pollsters and the GOP Extremists to the punch, with releasing the next phase of the stimulus package, which will benefit many more Americans directly in the pocket book.

Excellent Job Mr President!! Smarter is always Better!!

@ Chris from NY, who said "This is really incredible and yet they like to brand him Messiah."

The only morons using that word to describe him were the GOPers. It's been a favorite fulcrom for their hypocrisy for a few months now:

One side of the mouth: "You leftist libs are all crazy for thinking he's the 'messiah' and can fix everything instantly!!!"

Other side of the mouth: "It's been 4 months and he hasn't yet completely fixed the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression!!!"

If I were you guys, I'd refrain from saying ANYTHING for like 3 months or so and go back to the drawing board. Americans have short memories, so maybe by that time we'll have forgotten enough of what you've been saying for the past 6 months, that we won't be able to point out how everything coming out of your fat, bloated yappers is hypocrisy.

I recently have had the notion that many of you Obama haters just have no real common sense. Now, this isn't directed to the 2 or 3 of you that actually pose a decent argument and have legit concerns.

I personally think the poll is off. I don't think anyone is or even should be happy with the way things are going. But I also think that given the situation as it was and currently is, I can at least say the Obama is doing what he thinks will be best for America.

I guess my question to the haters is exactly what purpose would be served by him turning us into a socialist nation? Unless he also intends on getting congress to do away with that whole 2 term limit, it wouldn't benefit him very much. So it would go so very far in making you guys look less like fanatics if you would lose the Pinky and the Brain conspiracy theories of taking over the world.

President Obama is just getting out of the gate. I don't understand why we, the American people, have to act like little kids going to Disney World. All we do is keep on asking “are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Give me a break, right now President Obama is doing what any good parent would do and that is make sure everything is ready and good to go because there is nothing worst then getting to your destination and forgetting something.

And further more, I don't understand why the GOP and the rest of the repunks think they have an answer. Where is your plan?

    Wow Jim @ 1:45
Your intelligent level is really low.

Who put this country in the shape that it is now in ?
Who destroyed in 8 years what it took decades to create ?
How long will it take to help this country recover ? Certainly more that 1 year should be your answer. President Obama has only been in office a little over 4 months.

You really have to stop listening to Rush and the clowns at FOX.

My problem is who actually expected a guy who has NEVER ran a business in his LIFE to be able to make business decisions on behalf of a country??? Seriously, if you showed up for a job opening for a surgeon and your experience was being a waiter at the same restraunt for 15 years...would you be suprised you didn't get the job?

Obama has tripled the deficit that he inherited from Bush and we haven't added the cost of the Obama healthcare bill yet. We are living off borrowed (from China) money.

I am a demicrat in mots of my beliefs.
Obama is a very likable person and he has the best intensions for the country but the USA is right of center.
In the end the public wants more of their money in their pockets to make decisions than having the goverment make those decisions.
He will be a loved president but as you can see his policies are starting to get bad reviews and polling #
