WASHINGTON (CNN) – Overall, Americans approve of how President Obama is handling his job, but less than half the country agrees with his approach to battling the deficit and controlling federal spending, according to a new poll.
Obama enjoys a 61 percent job approval rating, and 67 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the president, according to the Gallup poll released Monday.
On the deficit, the public seems split, but the trend shows a general souring towards Obama's economic agenda: 48 percent now disapprove of the president's approach to dealing with the deficit, while 46 percent approve - a statistical split. Fifty-one percent disapprove of his approach to reining in federal spending, while 45 percent approve.
The Gallup survey of 1,105 adults was conducted May 29-31 and carries a possible sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I give him a D+. It's clear that he is unqualified to be president. He's way in over his head.

You're absolutely right. John McCain had a brilliant plan all along as to how to improve the economy – Sadly, he forgot to tell anyone or he probably forgot it himself...besides the gas tax idea regurgitation which would help patriots some 'new textbooks'.
Once the isolationist RepChristNazis realize the broad picture of how the country got into this mess, they will understand that fixing and realigning the 'Republican values' that they voted for in 2004 will take more than 4 months.
Decades to undo the damage Obama is doing?! Where have you been for the past eight years! It will take decades to undo the damage Bush and Co did. I doubt Obama or the even the creator himself could undo the damage that was done during the Bush years in only 4 months.

Good marks for such a tumultuous time. Keep up the good work President Obama. Thank you for all the time you've spent picking up and putting the pieces of our country back together. I, for one, recognize that Rome wasn't built in a day.
The administration has no choice but to spend in order to stimulate the economy in the absense of consumer spending. If it wasn't for the govt action, we would be talking about depression and not a recession right now!
But what about all these jobs he is creating???? I don't understand? What about all the jobs he is saving??? Oh yea, unemployment is about to hit 10% and Obama has no clue what he's doing. It's hard to tell people to cut back and sacrifice when you're dining around Paris and new york...
I wonder how long the media can keep hiding the facts that this guy's real poll numbers were low from day one.
@ Jo
Any temporary recovery will eventually be crushed by the fact that we have to, at some point in time, REPAY everything we are borrowing.
How to you propose we pay for the trillions Obama has already spent? We are already about $11 trillion in the hole, and Obama budget is projected to add another $1 trillion every year, for the next 10 years.
In case you can't read the writing on the wall, i'll spell it out for you here- Unless we stop the spending, and stop it NOW, we are screwed. Period. Name one country in the history of the world that has spent its way to prosperity. I dare you.
45% approve, that is stil 20 points above Bush. he he he
How can polls like this ever be accurate, when no options are given on how this is being handled? The GOP offers no other options for the economic recovery other than 'NO'.......so a simple 'do you like the recovery plan or not' is not fair when the alternative is....the non-plan of the GOP!
How about poll questions:
-Do you feel the Democrats are doing more related to the economic recovery than the Republicans?
-Do you feel the Republicans have offered a coherent economic recovery plan?
-Do you feel that the GOP can lead us out of the economic mess they got us into? (OK maybe this one is a little biased!) 🙂
In other news netanyahu tell obama if you think the ghettos in american cities are dangerous just try being a jew and walk down baghdad or damascus or beruit at night nyck nyck nyck
I agree with Jim and Mark in Miami.
So less than half think what he is doing is working. This would be the educated, informed, and pragmatic half, right?
It is going to take obama 4 years to undo the damage that Bush and co did to this country. Not only did bush fall asleep and let 911 occur on his watch but he ruined this country. This deficit spending is to revive the economy and undo Bush's mistakes. Once the economy picks up we can work on the deficit.
Hey Mike in MS, the Gallup Poll is much more credible than the Rassmussen Poll, which is owned by the Fox Noise Channel.
Typical poll for the majority of Americans because...
1. They are uneducated in economics...
2. They are uninformed as to what to expect in the short term...
3. The rethulicants are lying to them...
4. The rethuglicants are scaring the bejeezuz out of them, and...
5. No patience, and...
6. It's hip to be negative about things you don't understand.
That my fellow Americans is why we are in the economic mess we are all in – Plus Bushie and the rest of his morans did the heavy lifting to get us here....
8 years to get us in this hole – 4 months to get us out.
Now THAT would have been news.
Any of you pay off your 30 year mortgage in 8 months?
Looks like the Fox news groupies are taking over the message boards. 6 months in office and its doom and gloom. You guys are amazing
It looks like my pal Obama has lied to the country during his run for office. He just used pretty lawyer talk and too many people fell for it. He does not know what's up or down. Our country will have to pay for this enormous error in judgment. (We get what we deserve!!)
You kidding??? This poll must be a Repuglican conspiracy at work.
Obama is the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to my work. All those changes to the tax code and new "rights" for consumers and employees means my clients are keeping me busy.
You wanted change? Boy, are you are gonna get it. Then lets see those poll numbers skyrocket (among us vultures, anyway).
Hey there is a monkey running the white house.......
Yeah, he's been horrible in this area when this is the area that all thought would be a strength. Just goes to show he is just the puppet/front man. The two party system is a scam. One party with two names.
This report is absolutely pointless. Neither the spending nor the deficit percents are statistically different from each other. So we really can't say with high certainty that more people disapprove of how the President is handling the deficit or reining in government spending. It could in fact be flipped and more people approve versus disapprove.
in a year...Obummer will wish his numbers were this good..............already shaping up as 1 and gone
Spending – F Out of control by Obama
Foreign borrowing caused by Deficit – F Obama is leading us into Depression, infaltion, and a greatly devalued US dollar
GM – F Worst case of political payback to Unions in the history of the country – a shameful waste of government money and a dangerous intrusion into the private sector and capital markets.
National security – D- Obama has done nothing to make us safer, but he has weakened us.
Gitmo – D – Obama made a campaign promise and then made his announcement, but he has no clue what he is going to do about it.
North Korea and Iran – D – Obama has yet to figure out what he is going to do there
