Cheney inks book deal reportedly worth millions

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/04/art.cheney.gi.jpg caption=" Cheney is writing a book."](CNN) - Having made his rounds on the cable news circuit over the last few months, former vice president Dick Cheney is now headed to a book store near you.

Cheney has struck a deal with publishing house Simon & Schuster to write his memoirs covering a more than 40-year career in government, stretching all the way back to his roles in the Nixon and Ford administrations.

β€œIt has been a tremendous privilege to serve during some of the most interesting and challenging times, as well as with some of the most fascinating people, in American history,” Cheney said in a statement provided to CNN. β€œI look forward to writing about these experiences for the first time.”

The book will be published by Simon & Schuster's Threshold Editions, where former Cheney aide and current CNN contributor Mary Matalin serves as editor-in-chief.

The deal - which media reports have suggested is worth in excess of $2 million - is the latest to be struck by Robert Barnett, the Washington lawyer who most recently negotiated a book deal for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Barnett has also negotiated multimillion dollar deals for the Clintons and President Obama.

Daughter Liz Cheney called her father a "student of history" and said he has already begun collecting his thoughts in longhand and on his laptop computer.

"He wants to make sure that his story is told, and told in a way that his grandchildren will be able to understand and appreciate even 20 or 30 years from now," Liz Cheney told the New York Times.

Cheney mostly avoided addressing the media while in office, but has since become a vocal critic of the Obama administration's national security policies. His book, set to hit stores in the spring of 2011, will come on the heels of President Bush's memoir. That book is slated for release in fall of 2010.

Other Bush administration officials currently working on books including top aide Karl Rove, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Who cares what this man writes? It's just another demented coloring book featuring Cheney's delusional rantings. The man is truly demented beyond belief. He's a US Traitor and should be buried under the jailhouse.

I hope our former vice president got the OK from Rush Limbaugh first before he made a decision about the book!

YAWN. I'm sure the book will be heavily promoted by Limbaugh and his ilk.

I don't like Cheney...this doesn't bother me. Everyone has a book these days. Why are people angry about it? Just don't buy it. Most Americans don't read more than 2 books a year anyway, according to a recent study. I like Obama and I read his books. People who like Cheney can read his. Why this is even an argument is beyond me.

    @ Mississippi Mike:

So what are you saying MIke,that you can't write an autobiography until after you get elected into office? Doesn't make sense to me. There are a lot of people who have accomplished a lot in their lives that never get into politics. They too have a story to tell that might inspire others, and that will probably be less ficitonal than Mr. Cheney's account of events during his vice presidency, I would venture to add.

Great! Just what Barnes & Noble Bookstores needs! Another worthless fiction collecting dust!

I have so much more respect for G.W. Bush now. He is out of office, living life to his fullest, spending time with Laura, just the way it should be. Chenney needs to take lessons on this and stay out of the ring!

    To John @ 11:30am –

Cheney was a good man? Sort of like Hitler, Mengele, Edi Amin, or Atilla the Hun? Is that what you meant to say? You sir, are a fool of the highest magnitude. The only "good" thing about Cheney is that he's no longer in elected office, and that his health is poor.

How about we get the REAL truth behind this administration and declassify everything Bush/Cheney used "executive privilege" to protect?
The Bush Administration invoked "executive privilege" more times than any President in history. When that didn't work, they conveniently "lost" important Whitehouse documents or used Yahoo/Gmail to get around the system.

So I have one question for Cheney. If we can't verify your facts because you refuse to provide the back materials, how can we take your book seriously?

Why in the world would a book company support a man who murdered our troops for profitabl gain. Well, I guess as the old saying goes, birds of a feather flock together. Simon and Schuster is out to get their gain now, they patiently waited. But hey, this is the great American, right? Get yours now, and maybe think about the wrong of it latter.

@ Kim, who said "I'm sure the book will be heavily promoted by Limbaugh and his ilk."

Even better: Rich GOPer shills will buy truckloads of them like they do for Coulter and then the book will be touted as a "best seller"...all in an attempt to lend legitimacy to the 400+/- pages of neatly bound future toilet paper.
