Cheney inks book deal reportedly worth millions

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/04/art.cheney.gi.jpg caption=" Cheney is writing a book."](CNN) - Having made his rounds on the cable news circuit over the last few months, former vice president Dick Cheney is now headed to a book store near you.

Cheney has struck a deal with publishing house Simon & Schuster to write his memoirs covering a more than 40-year career in government, stretching all the way back to his roles in the Nixon and Ford administrations.

β€œIt has been a tremendous privilege to serve during some of the most interesting and challenging times, as well as with some of the most fascinating people, in American history,” Cheney said in a statement provided to CNN. β€œI look forward to writing about these experiences for the first time.”

The book will be published by Simon & Schuster's Threshold Editions, where former Cheney aide and current CNN contributor Mary Matalin serves as editor-in-chief.

The deal - which media reports have suggested is worth in excess of $2 million - is the latest to be struck by Robert Barnett, the Washington lawyer who most recently negotiated a book deal for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Barnett has also negotiated multimillion dollar deals for the Clintons and President Obama.

Daughter Liz Cheney called her father a "student of history" and said he has already begun collecting his thoughts in longhand and on his laptop computer.

"He wants to make sure that his story is told, and told in a way that his grandchildren will be able to understand and appreciate even 20 or 30 years from now," Liz Cheney told the New York Times.

Cheney mostly avoided addressing the media while in office, but has since become a vocal critic of the Obama administration's national security policies. His book, set to hit stores in the spring of 2011, will come on the heels of President Bush's memoir. That book is slated for release in fall of 2010.

Other Bush administration officials currently working on books including top aide Karl Rove, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

And now we have the real reason for all the public commentary from this loser who has never been right about anything in his pathetic life. The final chapter, if you will, in his war profiteering life. If the Democrats are the "Socialist" party, then surely the Republicans are the "National Socialist" party judging by some of the goose stepping sycophants posted here.

"As for the comments that suggest Cheney is a criminal: what crimes did he commit? Please be specific."

Hitler did not kill any Jews, but certainly would have been held responsible for their deaths.

While Cheney did not waterboard anyone, waterboarding has been a crime punishable by death in each of the two world wars.

I would say the international community has a case.

Now it makes sense! This is the only reason this criminal has been talking so much. He wanted his name in the news so he could sell his book. As if his illegal contracts in Iraq didn't land him enough money. This my friends could be the most dangerous man in the world.

The creep should take that money and give it to the families of the men he might as well have personally electrocuted in Iraq; or put it back into the country's coffers; or give it to one of the companies that did'nt even have a chance to bid on his no-bid war contracts; or.....well, you get the point.....

Let the man explain himself. The media and the liberal left have chosen the Bush administration's words for the last 8 years. Let him explain why they made the decisions they did. Of course, liberals always want to make conservatives to be evil war mongers. It is false and offensive. By the way Donkey Party, Hitler and his cronies were liberal, not conservative.

HIllary had a book deal, why is this such a problem?

Whatever he will write in his Book will be:
    1. Lies
    2. False
    3. Trying to defend his misdeeds
    4. Cover up of his Crimes

More money for the crookedest administration EVER. Who is going to buy this crap? That's why this idiot has been shooting off his mouth (and friends face) just to get publicity to hype the price. And the book company fell for it.

Good for Cheney and I'll be the first in line to buy his book. Cheney was an excellent Secretary of Defense and an excellent Vice-President and he knew how to protect the country as opposed to the current clown show that we are enduring.

    Difference Between CHENEY and HITLER:

Hitler killed Innocent Civilians, but not his own Troops.

Cheney Killed Innocent Iraqi Civilians as well as his own Troops.

Dictator Cheney hasn't come clean on Halliburton, torture, 9/11 so this should be a good piece of fiction and propoganda. I wonder if he'll have the guts to talk about his position on same-sex marriage. Doubt it – the NeoCons would burn the book if it did.

ah ha! now we know why he's crawled out of the bunker. Not only had the ventriloquist dummy gone back to Crawford, but he was pumping the market up for his tome...

I've never advocated destruction of books.... but putting this one into a compost heap a sheet at a time might be the best use of it.

Chaney may be a student of history. However as with many such books the real historical purpose is polishing of personal prestiege. If Chaney wants to come clean about the various questions people have about the George W. Bush administration then it might be worth reading. I doubt he will though, it's just another case of cashing in.

40 years of destruction, the Cheney way. Didn't make enough off of his Halliburton stock after it was propped up by the Iraq War?

@Mike, If you think cheney won the debate with obama you must of only caught snippets from fox. The right wing haters are always good for a laugh, always defending dyslogisms within in their party. See the republicans, especially conservatives are very dogmatic in their politics and thats why they lost. Most conservatives do not comprehend that when applying dogmatic slumber to their politics, it makes them isolated form the rest of America.
Dicks book will be filled with pejorative statments towards the democratic party and towards the American people and it will be a waste of paper. The conservatives will buy it because they do not want it to be non-seller because most the American people will not bother to waster their money.

For Donkey Party at 1220, and many others here. There are quite a lot of venomous comments made toward Cheney. I'm sure there are good and bad things that he did. But the manner in which many of you write your comments are neither cute or informed. I'm not siding with him, or against him; but, I am saying that none of you were privy to the classified reports of terrorist activities that resulted in many of the decisions made. The patterns of the reports, the veracity of the sources, and so on, are all taken into account in the decision-making process. So, the shorter point is that if you haven't been in his shoes, you comments, for or against, don't mean much.
