Sanford visiting family in Sullivan's Island

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) – Mark Sanford left the state capital of Columbia this morning and traveled to Sullivan’s Island to visit with his family, the governor’s office said Thursday.

Sanford’s spokesman also said the governor is calling state legislators and other state officials by phone.

Sanford’s wife Jenny has been at the family’s beach house on Sullivan’s Island since last week along with the couple’s four children.

The South Carolina governor returned from Argentina on Wednesday and admitted to an extramarital affair at an emotional press conference in the state capitol. Jenny Sanford said yesterday she asked her husband to leave two weeks ago for “a trial separation.” After the press conference, Sanford said in a statement that “Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.”

    A. Clinton lied to Congress which is a felony.
    B. Clinton was convicted of lying to Congress but the impeachment was upheld.
    C. Sanford did not lie to Congress.

Neither situation makes it morally right, but neither should be used for political gain by others. This is a personal issue and we have an obligation to respect the privacy of our leaders personal lives. However, when the personal issues begin to creep into the work place, the employer has the right to release the employee. Sanford needs to step down and let the Lieutenant Governor take over.

I also think the media needs to be held accountable for publishing emails from a private email account. Our Cyber Laws need to be updated and make the punishments harsher for people willing hack into private domains.

FORMER republican – He didn't lie about it, but Billy Boy sure did. Pointing that finger at us as he told those bold faced lies. Until the proof was on the dress. When will you morons realize it is a bipartisan issue and quit throwing stones. Politicians are sleezy liars, party lines don't discriminate.

Oh please , the only reason he confessed is that he got caught, the State newspaper here in Columbia had copies of his emails to his lover and were going to post them. He had no choice but to confess.

Hypocrites and parasites. You called for Clinton's blood yet you were doing same in your closet. You always stand on this moral high ground as if you were morality personified. Shame on all of you republicans, you are human after all.

When Mark Sanford, John Ensign, Bill Clinton and John Edwards, LIED to their Wives- No Body died or Injured.
When Bush and Cheney Lied about WMDs of Iraq.- 4,300 US Troops died – 45,000 US Troops got injured -100,000 Iraqis civilians died.
We must Forgive Mark Sanford, if we have Forgiven Bush and Cheney.

I suspect that as this story unravels we will next learn that his trip to Argentina was paid for with taxpayer dollars. He is toast. Sarah Palin must be thrilled – one less rival for 2012.

To "Enough": I second what another person wrote, that Sanford did indeed lie. What's amazing is that you could possibly see it otherwise. Perhaps that extreme denial is what constitutes being a Republican these days....Or maybe you think that since he snuck away without telling anybody where he was going, used state money to fly to Argentina, of all places, to continue an affair, then tried to sneak back into the country, where he was surprised at the airport by a reporter - but since he hadn't verbally admitted yet that he was having an affair - then somehow that constitutes "not lying." That the chief executive of a state can suddenly disappear with whereabouts entirely unknown even to his closest staffers is not only rank irresponsibility, but demonstrates a clearly narcissistic personality. Are you really going to sit there and make the case that this guy should spend another second in office?

John Kennedy was a notorious womanizer and the Democrats ignored his activities, a 21 year old intern provided Bill Clinton with oral sex in the White House and his party just did the "good ol boy" chuckle.

Now, since the situation involves a Republican – the Dems are outraged.

Get Real – the only emotion invovled should be pity for his family.

Black spider: I know there are two sides to a story but a man is usually the scoundrel. Mrs. Sandord bore FOUR BOYS and all of them are either teens or in puberty stage. This is a heck of a job for a woman who I understand helped him tremendously on the campaign trail. Filandering? I can tell you that as a mother there are times when it is difficult to get a little "shut eye" even with one child. Counseling is available for couples who drift apart due to children, work responsiblities, etc., but not everyone is willing to go.

To the liberals trying to say that Sanford should be impeached because Clinton was impeached...these are two completely separate situations. Clinton lied under oath to Congress about the matter. Lying to Congress is a crime. When the President commits a crime, he gets impeached.

Sanford did not testify before Congress. He was not sowrn under Oath. He has been lying, simply by carrying on the affair. He should resign as Governor and go quietly into the night. But there is simply no basis for impeachment (that has been found yet).

Leave his family (and him, to the extent he's dealing with this private issue) alone for crying out loud. Enough. Honestly, if you want to destroy your ability to spoon feed the American public this kind of tabloid nonsense as though it's real "news" and has anythign to do with the governance of this country, then you'd best back off or you'll forever cross the line.

Uhhh after all the lies last week of where Mark Sanford was it seems silly to make a statement of where he has or not has gone. He lied, his staff lied, and so the trust is broken. A better statement might have been that the governor has gone to visit family and the the Lt Gov. will be running the state while Sanford is gone. That would at least let the people of SC know that they are protected.

    Mary Lou,
I feel pity for the family (as I did for all the families you mentioned), but I also feel outrage that he left his state unprotected while he was away. If he had put the lieutenant governor in charge while he was away (or if his staff had any idea where he was or how to reach him in an emergency), I wouldn't care what he did on his own time. It is about job performance, not adultery.

Hold on! Sanford lied REPEATEDLY and, unlike Clinton, disappeared for days! First he was writing, then he was hiking, then he went to Argentina to clear his head and drive along the coast (a two mile narrow strip overlooking the intercoastal waterway, hardly scenic). He was sticking to the last story until he ran into that reporter in Atlanta and realized that they had his e-mails.

Boy oh boy, you guys have convenient amnesia, don't you?

Now that Sanford may be facing resignation or removal from office, I wonder if he is reconsidering accepting South Carolina's portion of the stimulus money for expanded unemployment benefits. Or, does he now have a conflict of interest on this issue? 🙂

... and the black spider is now blaming the wife! I just threw up in my mouth!

The man abandoned his four sons on Father's Day. He is supposed to be working on his marriage and chooses his mistress instead. He's also a loud advocate of the "sacredness of marriage" – for everyone expect himself. It was all about him ... not about the children, his wife, his vows to love, honor and cherish...

He is just like all the other legislators – completely egotistical, arrogant in his actions, answerable to no-one and on the dole for his livelihood to the american people whom he obviously has no respect for (not to mention his family). He should resign but he undoubtedly wont....

well im not suprised beacuse people do cheat its just human nature to want more and better thangs than what you have. and im sure that mr. sanford and his wife have some sort of political marriage arangment to further his career and her image. just like hillary more than likely know bill was getting around but didnt care beacuse he was her path to where she is at today. im sure its the same way with Gov. sanfords marriage. people need to understand that politicans (all politicans) and their spouses only look out for them selfs and use one another to advance their agendas. so im almost certin she know about the affair and didnt care beacuse its a good gig being the first lady of a state. in big game politics marriage and love do not exist its more of a business arrangment.
