SC GOP chair says Sanford should consider stepping down

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) - South Carolina Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd seemed to suggest Wednesday that the time had come for Gov. Mark Sanford to consider resigning from office:

"For the past two days, I have been speaking with Republican leaders across South Carolina," she said in a statement. "There is clearly a growing view that the time may have come for Governor Sanford to remove himself and his family from the limelight, so that he can devote his efforts full-time to repairing the damage in his personal life."

Floyd has spent much of the last week talking privately with state GOP leaders about the scandal but has, until now, been publicly silent on whether Sanford should step down.

Floyd wasn't the only prominent South Carolina Republican to speak up on Wednesday. The Senate's powerful Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell also suggested that Sanford should leave the office. McConnell said Sanford "has lost the support of the people that is needed to govern."

While he didn't make an outright demand for Sanford to go, he asked the governor "to do the right thing for himself, his family and our state." If Sanford resigns and lieutenant governor Andre Bauer becomes governor, McConnell would then be promoted to lieutenant governor.

However, McConnell is one of the most powerful legislators in the state and people close to him say he would likely be reluctant to give up that position in order to take Bauer's spot.

Gov. Sanford is a Republican which means he's going nowhere or doing nothing different UNTIL Rush Limbaugh tells him to. So far all Rush has said is that this is somehow President Obama's fault so stay tuned to see how the head of the GOP decides his fate.

Stay in there. If Clinton can do it to an intern in the White House, you don't have a problem. You didn't perjure yourself, so you don't have impeachment to worry about.

Libs still don't understand law, so this comment may be beyond their intellectual grasp.

In listening to him for the past several days, I believe he is suffering from what is known as narcissism. He doesn't care about his wife and kids, the state, or anything else. Only about himself. It's a very dangerous mental disease that, left untreated, causes irreparable harm to anyone and everyone around him.

Can he still be the poster child for the gop if he steps down? He does bring new meaning to the phrase, "up and comer."

Hmm...no right wingers coming on here and screaming about Bill Clinton.
Do you finally get it? We don't care if he had an affair. But, he went AWOL from his post and may have used taxpayer money. That is something that should be a concern.

As a proud lesbian I am sick and tired of conservatives telling me that I am a nobody and that I should not be able to participate in American life. I am a somebody. I am a monogamous somebody. Heterosexuals act as if they are only thinking of baby Jesus when in the throws of sex. This hypocrisy has got to end. Removing Sanford will not stop my complaints. Remove don't ask, don't tell and the Defense of Marriage Act NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sanford has admitted there was some attraction early on in the relationship with his dear, dear, friend so he had eight years to seriously consider and count the cost of "crossing the line." He made a choice with his eyes wide open but now doesn't want to pay up.

He is either a shrewd, cold-hearted, calculating bastard or a stupid, Southern-hick fool to think he's going to get a Hail Mary pass on this!

I cannot believe he has the gall to publicly declare (to all the world and sundry) undying love to his "soul mate / mistress" of this adulterous liaison while expecting his wife to accept whatever bits of scrap he throws her way. What is she supposed to do...continue holding on like the good, dutiful wife so that he can save face and salvage his political career and maybe, just maybe he'll fall back in love with her one day?

It is all too obvious he holds the mistress in much higher esteem than he does his wife and I hope Jenny's attitude is "thanks...but no thanks, I can do much better than that!!!"

I blame Jenny. We are all down on him but she might have drove him to this point.

This is a train wreck for the GOP, it's worst than the Mark Foley and Larry Craig scandals put together. I feel sorry for Jenny and the kids, they certainly dont deserve this, but the GOP deserves Mark Sanford, he is exactly the poster boy for their continued hypocrisy.

P.S. and FYI: Bill Clinton, Ensign nor any of the other cheaters ever disrespected their wives publically like Sanford is doing. What he has done would rip the lining out of anyone's self-esteem four-children and 20 years of my life later.

To be honest, don't ask don't tell should be removed. If you are gay you can serve in the military and well.

But I will draw the line at removing Defense of Marriage Act. Do not demonize marriage to push your agenda.

"SC GOP chair says Sanford should consider stepping down"

Translation: "blah blah he rained on our self-proclaimed moral superiority parade yackity shmackity"

When it comes to the GOP, the REAL question is: "who is going to step up (and when)?" For the past 9 months to a year, it has seemed more like a political limbo with these guys...how low CAN they go?

@ Mike, who asked "Where is Fox news and it's followers? "

Well, after they placed a "(D)" next to his name during his allocution...I mean press conference...Faux Noise stopped reporting on him because they didn't want to draw any further attention to their own malfeasance.

It took this long to come to that conclusion. When Republicans are busted, they stay in office because they are superior to all of us. When Democrats are busted, they quit to preserve their families from disgrace.

Sanford should only try and save his relationship with his wife because he wants to and not because it is the 'right' thing to do. At this point he should just be honest not only with his wife but with himself. Sanford loves another woman. He does not want to be with his wife. His heart cries out for another and it can not be shut up. Sanford's political career is over. The worst that could happen has happened. For the first time in a long, long time Sanford is truly free. The love story does not have to be tragic. Mark, be honest with your wife. Be honest with your children. Be honest with the people in your state and last but far from least be honest with yourself. Be with your beloved. Be happy. Don't make your wife look at your face every day knowing that in your heart you long for another. Save her that. Be honest, Man!

Gov. Sanford wants to resign from office. That is why he’s constantly spilling his guts. He figures if he keeps adding additional details, unsolicited as they are; the GOP will finally get tired of the media barrage and force him to RESIGN.

Think about it – why would he continue to talk to the media? They did not ask him for additional information. Why would he deliberately humiliate his wife by confessing his undying love for his mistress?

Because he wanted to make it virtually impossible for Jenny Sanford to even consider reconciliation. Without the responsibility of the Governor’s office or any obligation to the GOP, and no chance of reconciliation with his wife; he is free to catch the first thing smoking back to Argentina.

Most CNN bloggers want Governor Sanford to resign because he is guilty of being a Republican. As for being AWOL, I'm sure South Carolina has provisions for impeachment or discipline. And it will, and should, be up to the legislature and citizens of South Carolina, not the blogosphere, to determine his fate.

Bottom line, Sanford is NOT man enough to step down, so the GOP should do it for him. They need to fire his behind, send him packing his bag, with no rights to draw unemployment or compensation for his fatal display of behavior. This is absolutely sickening, to watch this man display his personal life on the public scale like this, with his kids and soon to be ex-wife watching. This has to be embarrassing and humiliating for both the wife and kids. Put this FOOL out of his misery!!!
