Biden visits Iraq over Fourth of July weekend

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Baghdad Thursday, where he will underscore Washington's commitment to a drawdown of American forces there, the White House said.

Biden is to meet with Iraqi and U.S. military officials and will also speak with troops. He is expected to deliver a speech to troops on Saturday, the Fourth of July, and may visit another city.

The trip comes a couple of days after U.S. combat troops withdrew from urban centers in the country, and left security duties in cities like Baghdad, Mosul, Basra and other communities to Iraqi security forces.

That move is part of a bilateral U.S.-Iraqi security agreement that calls for all U.S. troops to depart Iraq by the end of 2011.

Among the officials Biden will meet are President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Parliament Speaker Ayad al-Samarrai.

Biden will discuss with Iraq's leaders the importance of achieving the political progress that is necessary to ensure the nation's long-term stability.

It is Biden's second trip to Iraq this year; but his first as vice president.

Goo to see this Administration actually pulling their weight instead of taking 3 month long vacations.

Cheney always thought Iraq was such a great place. Why doesn't he go too? I'm sure the Iraqi people would be thrilled to see him since he always claimed that the US would be greeted as liberators. Maybe he can find that evidence that Iraq was connected to 9/11 he always claimed he knew about while "selling the war" to the American public. And, he can help find those pesky missing weapons of mass destruction he always claimed were there.

Have a great trip, Dick. The Iraqi people are waiting to welcome you with open arms...loaded ones too because they love guns and shooting people just as much as you do.

Better keep him muzzled. He might unintentionally start another war.

I admire Vice President Joe Biden for his service. Had the honor of meeting him yesterday in northwestern Pennsylvania when he announced the President's new broadband initiative for rural America. After his prepared remarks, he brushed aside protocol, grabbed the mic, and stepped into the audience to answer questions for 20 minutes. No stumblin' or bumblin' - just plain talk from a leader who is as genuine as they come.

Wow, what a treat for the troops – that loser Biden "the Plagiarist." What we couldn't send the devil instead? He'd have more credibility at least. LOL

We as a people, as a country need to let go of Left or Right. We need to work together, and for God's sake stop with the hateful words that so many of you choose to use.

May God bless you all and I hope everyone has a safe 4th of July!!!

Whenever a lib visits Iraq it shows just how much class our military members really have. They remain calm, cool, and respectful even though a slimmy lib Democrat who has wished for them to fail and even be killed by the enemy for political benefit is within punching distance.

Let us not forget what Democrats had been wishing for and who they were rooting for while Bush was in office. The one good thing about having a lib as president is that at least now all Americans are united in wishing for success and safety for our brave men and women fighting for freedom. When a republican is in office, at least 3/4ths of the Democrats in this country are hoping for the worst for them, they showed us who they really are from 2002-2008.

woulda been better if it was Obama, at least Biden shows his face there, kinda funny this is supposed to be a moral booster when Obama and Biden didnt even have confidence in them enough before for them to win

"I knew someone from the administration would be traveling to the region around the 4th. This should be a great morale booster."

Yeah, nothing like getting a visit from someone who was wishing you would fail and did not care what the consequences of that failure meant to these soldiers families sure is goona boost morale-lol-, only a lib Democrat can lie so effortlessly, guess it is easy when you have no morals, values, or integrity.

Hey Dutch, how do you figure this is a morale booster? Biden's boss and fellow co-horts are making the soldiers less safe in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama is apologizing to the very enemies those soldiers are fighting against, and when (hopefully not if) those soldiers make it home, they'll be faced with not being able to get a job, paying more than they can afford for gas and electricity, and be unable to get good healthcare because the Obama Medical Review Czar doesn't deem their condition worthy enough to get in to see a doctor.

Yep, I'd say that's a real morale booster right there.

bad idea. What if some of the suicidal nutbags in the region decide this is the perfect time to kill him?

Thank you President Bush for not giving in to the liberal left and actually sending more troops to get the job done. Obama voted against victory in Iraq, and now is trying to take the credit for it. He is a true Democrat. Just all the idiot Democrats on this ticker who 99.9% of the time don't make sense with their ramblings. We are used to it though. We have had 8 previous years of ramblings from teh idiot left.

I can't tell you how big of a Moral boost there is when any celebrety or politician takes the time, risks their lives and endures just a taste of what the American Soldier/Sailor/Marine & Airman have to endure, just to come see us and say, "I could never do your job, but the least I can do is come here and thank you in person. Thank you."

"No Mr. Vice President. Thank you."

Good for Joe! His son is serving over there so he understands the hardships that are faced over there. Ofcourse the far right will say that he is there just to exploit the troops. Well, as an Active Duty Soldier I am proud of my President and Vice President.

Okay so the troops withdrew from urban areas! So what! They are still there, in harms way! It is absurb! That's like troops occupying the city of Houston and then the withdraw to Conroe, Sugarland, Baytown, Pasadena, Katy etc (I know I know, unless you live or have lived here you have no idea what I am talking about), and the President saying "the troops withdrew" well yeah but they are still surrounding Houston. My point is, President Obama, make a decision, bring the troops home like you promised or just build some bases there and make Iraq the 51st state of America. They don't need a rah rah speech from you Mr. Vice President, they need to know when and if they can come home. I served in Desert Sheild/Storm and mosted did not care to hear a "hang in there" speech. Quit playing around and let Iraq hash out there own crap and bring our troops home. I'm sick of this on the fence crap that President Obama is doing. And for the record, I voted for Obama and as I can pat him back on some issues, this one I have to slap in for (metaphorically speaking)

Visiting troops in a war started under false pertenses, no weapons of mass destruction, no ties to Al Qaeda.
