Alaska's soon-to-be governor praises Palin

(CNN) - Alaskan Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will succeed Gov. Sarah Palin after she leaves office later this month, called the governor Alaska's greatest gift to the United States on Saturday.

"I was very surprised at first," he said of Palin's decision to resign, which he said she told him Wednesday.

"But then as she began to explain why she was doing it, I began to see it was Sarah Palin, once again, moving to put Alaska's interest first," Parnell told CNN.

Palin, a Republican and John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year, said Friday she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month and would not run for a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

"People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska," Palin said at a news conference at her home in Wasilla.

Palin added in a statement that she was "determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path."

"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional 'lame duck' status in this particular climate would just be another dose of 'politics as usual,' something I campaigned against and will always oppose."

Alaska's senior U.S. senator, Lisa Murkowski, was one of the people unhappy with Palin's decision.

"I am deeply disappointed that the governor has decided to abandon the state and her constituents before her term has concluded," the Republican said via satellite phone from interior Alaska, her office said.

Parnell said he accepted that others might see the governor's resignation in a different light than he does.

"She's accomplished more in these two and a half years than most governors accomplish in one or two terms," he said. "Our governor has been a great governor. She is going to be Alaska's and is Alaska's greatest gift to our country."

The soon-to-be governor said he intended to lead the state, to make sure people have jobs and that the state's finances are stable.

"Those are the things I'm going to be dealing with," he said. He will be sworn in on July 26.

Asked whether he planned on completing the term, he said "yes."

"But I am also conscious that we don't control life, so I may be dead tomorrow, and I'm not going to commit beyond that," he said, smiling.

Parnell said he planned to run for a full gubernatorial term in 2010.

What took her so long? She should have stepped down after the General Elections and be rid of all the bad publicity that she brought upon herself.

There are certain characteristics that make a person. He/she carries a personna befitting that of a politician. One that you recognize from the on-set.

With Sarah Palin, she did not portray to be that policitian. She reflected the "wanna be" but couldn't be politician.

If there was anyone who tried "bringing her down", it was her own words and actions that contributed to her demise.

Answering questions intelligently and professionally would have brought upon better and positive results from the public. Trying to make up answers that does not pertain to the question made her look dumb.

    That, was her downfall.

There is a growing conservative movement brought on by the growing liberal government. "Government for the government, by the government so help me government."
She may not be the next President of the United States. But she will be a big voice for this next generation of Conservatism that is growing with every step this Administration, and this congress makes.
You might say that the more this liberal agenda is pushed down our throats, the conservative resolve grows stronger.
    Just watch and see!

Palin can't take care of her family, write a book, travel around the country looking for admirers and be governor at the same time. No multi-tasking for her. She's a pretty sorry excuse for an elected official.

What would she do as President? "The world won't stop turning so I can focus on one thing at a time! They're all out to get me! Boo hoo hoo! I need to quit."

    She's such a whiner!

I can think of 5 things off the top of my head that are bigger gifts from Alaska to the U.S., and I've never even been there: Inuit culture, Denali National Park, Mt. McKinley, just about any glacier, and my friends' bakery cafe in Talkeetna. 'Northern Exposure' – that's six. I can keep going....however, her resignation – now that's a gift, especially to the people of Alaska.

If Sarah Palin is the best thing Alaska has to offer then we don't need Alaska.

  6. No fan of Palin, that's for sure

What is it about whale blubber and lack of sunshine that makes one a sycophantic idiot? Well, maybe at least Parnell will have the good grace to let Alaska go quietly into the good night, where it belongs.

To Steve Peterson: Business world? Palin? What business has she ever run? She was a council member, a hockey mom, a mayor of a very small town (that she left in debt) and then somehow elected Governor, which gave her all the confidence that she could be VP of all of us. I see no business experience in any of that. From what I've read, she delegated everything to really really qualified high school friends in her employ. She's leaving because her book deal pays better than her job. Period. This is, as always, doing what's best for Palin.

Scott of Tuscon, Obama is not a backward, educated hick. He is also not a quitter that is why he is the president now. You should have suggested that GWB, who you no doubt voted for president, should have resigned. After all, he put us in this mess that our, not a quitter president is now fixing.

    It's sooo simple...
What would we expect him to say? Would he be trashing her?

The only way for a smooth transition is to pat the back of your former boss. It happens in corporate America all of the time.

Give him some time to realize just how much of her mess is on his shoes. He just may be singing a different tune then.

Sarah's going... prayers do work!! Good for Alaska, great for America!
    Happy Fourth of July!! ***

There is something else going on with this women, but whatever she's gone. Her speech was babbling, made no sense, i don't believe for one minute her staff knew what she was doing. The people of Alaska deserve better. So if she had become VP would she have gotten disillusioned and quit as well?
These politicians have no regard for the people.

From Palin's Web site: In her speech, she compares herself to Seward and the ridicule he endured when he purchased Alaska.(Which, by the way is shown smack-dab in the middle of a map of the United States on her Web site. So she not only doesn't know English, she doesn't know geography!) Sanford and King David; Palin and Seward. These failed GOPpers think all they have to do is compare themselves with an historical figure and voila! We'll all believe they are worthy of respect, too.

Anyway, here's a line from her speech:

"Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources. This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It's energy! God gave us energy."

    Huh? She's such a dip!

Alaska's "greatest gift" to the US would be it's natural beauty. That is God given beauty. Sarah Palin is man made and sold to the highest bidder, and that is the almightly dollar. No amount of pagent prep is going to get her ready to step into a role she will tire of and QUIT half way thru. She wrote her ticket to obscurity by quiting her day job.

I think so also. It's is nothing but ignorant goulhunters who would think otherwise. It is you scum that drove her from office. I will never vote Democrat or watch any late night talk show ever again. If a comedian who thinks he is one can not think up a joke without the expense of others then they should fade away. HThey're nothing but tumblebugs anyway.

She is her own worst enemy.....she has brought on all the negative news coverage, she is the one who goes out before the camera's and whins anbd complains that the media isn't treating her fair......I always thought her to be a loser and she has certainly proved it by quiting her job after only 2 year..........

I think she was so upset about being upstaged by the death of Michael Jackson and pilandering of Sanford and Ensign that she decided to set off a new kind of fireworks on the Fourth of July. What a diva! Good riddance!

How do you lead by quitting, Palin says she hates politics as usual yet if she had gone on to be VP it would have been tougher, should anyone trust she would have not quit on the country

She is quitting and only those who cannot take the heat quit

Alaskan Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell is full of B.S. when he says "Sarah Palin is Alaska's greatest gift to the United States". WRONG!

Actually Alaska's greatest gift to the United States is its geographic location between the U.S. and potential hostile countries like Russia, China, and Korea. Alaska's location makes it a natural and strategic obstacle against Russian attacks.

WELLL, if I was about to succeed the present Governor as the next Governor of the State of Alaska, I guess I would be singing her praises, too. It goes with the territory to be gracious to your governor when she is about to hand over the reigns of power!!!!

So let's she, if she had been elected to the office of the VP...

McCain would have croaked, she would have cracked and quit on us, and then we'd have a yet unnamed tertiary that would have had NO vetting by the American people in the election process...

    Some leader...

Sarah Palin wants to be in the political spotlight so much that she is willing to give up her reign as governor for future elections. Is this a woman that people should trust to be a leader when she hasn't got the guts or brains to run a small state like Alaska? I'm waiting for the next "important news conference" from her so I guess we should all be holding our breath with anticipation! What a joke! Caribou Barbie only cares about herself and certainly not the people of Alaska, and I think that they should be happy to get rid of her! If she has the nerve to run for office again, she should be prepared for the same treatment she received last year, since she quite evidentally hasn't gotten any smarter!
