Stimulus money needs to be spent faster, Dems say

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/07/05/art.steny0705.gi.jpg caption="House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Sunday that the president's $787 billion dollar stimulus plan was taking too long to create jobs in the struggling economy."]
(CNN) - A leading congressional Democrat and Republican both expressed disappointment Sunday with the pace of the government's economic stimulus program, but offered differing views on whether it was a good idea.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said allocating the $787 billion in the stimulus package pushed by President Barack Obama to create jobs was taking too long.

"We're disappointed," Hoyer, D-Maryland, told "FOX News Sunday." "We're looking at ways to get the money out more quickly."

Hoyer's Republican counterpart, Rep. John Boehner, said on the same program that the stimulus bill passed by Congress in February was flawed.

"You can't spend $800 billion of taxpayer money and not create jobs, when you say that's what the bill was for," Boehner, of Ohio, complained. Boehner said the bill only funds more government, rather than creating private sector jobs.

Democrats, led by Vice President Joe Biden, contend the stimulus money will begin launching more construction projects and other job-creating programs now that necessary mechanisms have been established and contracts signed.

"This was set up to spend out over 18 months," Biden said in an interview with ABC's "This Week" program. "There are going to be major programs that are going to take effect in September - $7.5 billion for broadband, new money for high-speed rail, the implementation of ... the new electric grid. And so this is just starting."

Neither Biden nor Hoyer would comment on whether an additional economic stimulus package is necessary to help pull the U.S. economy out of recession. The latest unemployment figures issued last week showed a 9.5 percent jobless rate, the highest in more than two decades.

Boehner, however, warned against more government spending to heal the economic problems.

"I don't believe it will create jobs," he said, calling instead for reduced taxes to let small business and consumers spend their money as they choose.

Boehner called the scope and speed of Obama's domestic agenda - which so far includes the stimulus package, a health care overhaul now working its way through Congress and an energy bill to combat global warming passed by the House - "nothing short of breathtaking."

The end result, he said, would be "bigger government, higher taxes, less freedom for the American people."

CNN needs to be more accurate in it's description/ headlines..."Dems" are not disappointed with the Obama plan...they are disappointed with the muted effect that the stimulus has had so far and with the speed with which the money is being disbursed. Hoyer clearly said that he believes in, endorses and expects the "plan" to work.

I'm just a simple middle class working person ( 22 years of factory work ) but how can even a person of wealth and status agree with this policy of spending without income ?

The ignorance of these statements is almost overwhelming since this is purely the fault of congress no doubt! Thus these very men are part of the problem. As well as not making jobs... that is just as ludicrous! Every new program funded by this money will MAKE jobs! That should go without saying! You put money into infrastruction and that makes jobs! You put money into green energy and that makes jobs of necessity! You put money into better health care and that makes jobs as it will change the structure NOT eliminate most jobs! PALEEESE! People, stop listening to this stupid proganda! This is NOT rocket science.... it is merely LOGIC!

Bigger government, higher taxes, less freedom for American people is exactly where the U.S. is headed with the Obama administration and the Democratic majority in the house & Senate. If the huge spending isn't
stopped and we don't start cutting back the country is headed for a brick wall. The money that needs to be spent is on business and industry that will create jobs. Everything else comes latter.

If Democrats want the Stimulus Money to be spent faster and put to good use, maybe they should consider putting it in the hands of Americans to start mfg. businesses that will compete with imports. You see, when money is spent on imports it (the Money) goes overseas. When it is spent on American Made Products, the funds remain within our country. GET THE DRIFT?

They can also put some of the funds directly in my hand. I can spend it better than the Chinese.

How can Obama have a plan?? He has never ran a business or even had a job!! He does not know how anything works.
Just like the banks, they put the money in RESERVES, and on top
of that Obama wants to cut government jobs...WHEN ARE PEOPLE

OBAMA doesn't know what to do, he was elected because he promised FREE LUNCHS to a lot of people...quess what guys!!
    The are "NO FREE LUNCHES".

A lot of people want to be taken care of...well, grow up..its time you
    took care of yourself.
If there are no jobs then go make a job. Get off your butt and mow lawns, do errands for elderly people, scrub your next door neighbors kitchen floor... whatever you are good at...DO!
Stop waiting for other people to take care of you.

I am an independent who voted for Bush TWICE and would have voted for McCain had he not chosen Palin as his running mate (I am also an Alaskan). While Bush was "growing government", increasing taxes (for middle/low) income Americans, and taking away many of our freedoms I don't recall hearing much dissent from other repubs. NOW, we have a president (democrat) who is trying to get us out of this mess and all I hear is dissent. Can this man do anything right in the eyes of repubs? It's really unfortunate that many repubs are not seeing this situation for what it is....a mess that took years to make and it's going to take years to get out of. Instead of dissenting EVERYTHING this man does, offer up your own solutions. As an American citizen, I WANT A GOVERNMENT THAT WORKS. However we can achieve that let's do it...it's high time don't you think?

So where is the money and all the jobs it was suppose to create Obama ?? Hope you didnt give it to your Middle East buddies and your new found friend Hugo Chavez. ?? But Biden is actually in charge of this so as it goes sour Obama can throw him under the bus...like those Inspector General whistle blowers he fired. He'll say Biden wasnt alert and seemed confused but we already know that .....still wont explain why peole are unemployed in huge numbers.

  12. It's bad.......

unemployment keeps rising.....foreclosures are rising......and the overall economy is sinking......taxes will be rising soon to pay for the deficit....

This spells DOOM for Obama in 2012......

What about the $700+billion President Bush handed out just before he left office? Almost no accountability was used. What did this money do? Nothing will change until the jobs we lost to overseas come back. Face it. Until this country is no longer run by Wall Street we're in the toilet.

If you took a truth pole with God, I think we would find, that the democrats are more concerned about staying in power, than they are about what is best for the American people. Then again I don't think they know what is best. It's at least 51% for power. And 49% for the American people. It's too bad, this was such a great country!!

What if the Republicans started putting ethics into business and tried to make money by selling a good product at a reasonable cost AND treat the employees well??? Rather than just screw the public as much as possible if it makes 2 cents. There is no accountability in business anymore, and nobody to go to if you are treated unethically.

"Stimulus money needs to be spent faster, Dems say"

What a fabulous, stupendous, idea! Let's waste money even fast so we can go broke even faster!

Except, of course, the US is already technically broke and we're spending money we don't even have.

And, of course, this so-called "stimulus" isn't creating any private-sector jobs! Why would any business with any sense go to the trouble and expense of hiring people when the idiot feds are doing everything they can to ruin the economy with inflation and outrageous levels of taxation?

"This was set up to spend out over 18 months," Biden said in an interview

So they are waiting till the last minute to have something to point to at the end? Americans need to eat now.

Based on the numbers, Boehner is right. The stimulus isn't creating jobs – just more debt.

Remember the promise that if congress rushed through the stimulus bill before anyone had time to read it, unemployment would "cap out" about 8%?

This is from the same people who warned us that if we didn't bailout the auto industry, they'd go bankrupt, and bankruptcy was "not an option."

No one can takes us down the tubes like Reagan and the Bushies did. Remember it was debt, debt and more debt for all those years. We had one very large surplus at the end of the Clinton years and where did it go? Thank God, we have a leader like President Obama in the White House and it is a sorry state that the republicans continue to want to tear down this country.

Boehner does not talk any sense...well, stimulus is not working...how come we see lot of road laying signs and people working on road construction...cann't we see on road? It is the time that we need to think that "INDUSTRIAL SECTOR" need to come back to the nation to curb unemployment....stimulus is a drop in the ocean....wake up....for industrial sector we need to fix "health care to all americans". People, we need to drive less and save energy...and oil independence...these republicans are already bribed not to stress on this....wake up....america, wake up.....

They are all a bunch of clueless people who have no trained background in economics, education, or management of any large corporations. All a bunch of buffoons who can talk smoothly out both sides of their mouths and convince people that they know what they are talking about.

This goes for both sides of the political spectrum, but frankly I would prefer a secure nation over a socialist one.
