Stimulus money needs to be spent faster, Dems say

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/07/05/art.steny0705.gi.jpg caption="House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Sunday that the president's $787 billion dollar stimulus plan was taking too long to create jobs in the struggling economy."]
(CNN) - A leading congressional Democrat and Republican both expressed disappointment Sunday with the pace of the government's economic stimulus program, but offered differing views on whether it was a good idea.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said allocating the $787 billion in the stimulus package pushed by President Barack Obama to create jobs was taking too long.

"We're disappointed," Hoyer, D-Maryland, told "FOX News Sunday." "We're looking at ways to get the money out more quickly."

Hoyer's Republican counterpart, Rep. John Boehner, said on the same program that the stimulus bill passed by Congress in February was flawed.

"You can't spend $800 billion of taxpayer money and not create jobs, when you say that's what the bill was for," Boehner, of Ohio, complained. Boehner said the bill only funds more government, rather than creating private sector jobs.

Democrats, led by Vice President Joe Biden, contend the stimulus money will begin launching more construction projects and other job-creating programs now that necessary mechanisms have been established and contracts signed.

"This was set up to spend out over 18 months," Biden said in an interview with ABC's "This Week" program. "There are going to be major programs that are going to take effect in September - $7.5 billion for broadband, new money for high-speed rail, the implementation of ... the new electric grid. And so this is just starting."

Neither Biden nor Hoyer would comment on whether an additional economic stimulus package is necessary to help pull the U.S. economy out of recession. The latest unemployment figures issued last week showed a 9.5 percent jobless rate, the highest in more than two decades.

Boehner, however, warned against more government spending to heal the economic problems.

"I don't believe it will create jobs," he said, calling instead for reduced taxes to let small business and consumers spend their money as they choose.

Boehner called the scope and speed of Obama's domestic agenda - which so far includes the stimulus package, a health care overhaul now working its way through Congress and an energy bill to combat global warming passed by the House - "nothing short of breathtaking."

The end result, he said, would be "bigger government, higher taxes, less freedom for the American people."

Unemployment is not rising because of the stimulus, it rising because of greed of outsourcing. You can't blame Obama for this mess.

I'm 64. Understand that the stimulus was allowed by Obama to be stolen by Pelosi in the House. It was not read, not on web as promised, and is full of "support" to states for unemployed. So, states simply swapped dollar needs for Congress stimulus dollars.

Compound this with the fact that Obama is not a real executive. He is and idea man (idealog). An executive would make sure funds got out. Only 10% to date. But he is off to a new idea – health care, cap and trade, trip to who know's where....

This coming October 2009, USA must pay $802 BILLION for interest of our IOUs, where are we going to get the money to do that? TAX INCREASE the DEMOCRAPS are pushing right now in Congress and soon in the Senate. Where the American people will get the money to pay for their bills with ADDITIONAL TAXES? GOD ONLY KNOWS!

Watch the unemployment rate, ti will continue to rise, businesses are shutting down their doors, those that remain will continue laying off people until there's no more people to layoff.

CAN YOU SMELL DEPRESSION? It is here NOW! Save as much as you can, don't spend on anything not unless it's necessary, folks, we are in for one hell of a bad ride inside a train with a conductor Obama at the helm. A train wreck!

Politics is simple math vs. fuzzy math, really. The success equation reads like this: if unemployment does not come down, democrats will lose seats in both houses of Congress in November 2010, perhaps even their current majorities, given how angry voters are at Washington's total ineptitude on matters that directly affect them. As for the democrat solution to the equation, when your party controls both houses of Congress and you give yourself trillions to work with, the American people won't buy the "just blame Bush" excuses in 2010. Uh-uh, ain't gonna happen in 2010. You and your democratic Congress own the recovery's success or failure, Mr. President and Vice-President. You and your Congress, sirs, not Bush and not the Republicans whose views you dissed, Madam Pelosi and Leader Reid.

Wow you right wing whiners are amazing. So, Bush hands Obama a lump of coal and you are absolutely shocked he hasn't turned it into a diamond yet. We all knew things were going to get worse before they got better. Big surprise to the right wingers.

Stimulus jobs are coming out. The problem is there is still a lot of resistance. Boehner and his crew would prefer to see the country fail instead of Obama's plan to succeed.

You need to stop thinking the ghost of Reagan is going to fix things. Trickle down is what has put us where we are. As the rich got richer, they created jobs--in India, Malaysia, Vietnam, and China. Now, we need adults to fix the problem. Whine all you want right wingers, your ideas are bankrupt.

I would rather have the Democrats in charge than the Republicans. Remember, this economic mess was caused by Bush for 8 years with a Republican Congress and Senate for 6 of the 8 years. Th Democrats are trying to fix the mess. I would give them a chance. It has been just 6 short months.

Hey Repubs, no matter what you say, OBAMA WILL win a second term and there is nothing you can do about it. After what BUSH did, Obama can do no wrong in my eyes.

And that's exactly why people like you are the problem. You are blind to the fact that Obama is not the right solution.

Voting for an extreme Democrat in 2008 was like shooting ourselves in the head to stop the headache.

It is amazing how many people can't speell on this topic. Most of them liberal democrats. Then there are people like me, on the right, that like the right to drink and respond – without having to pay sin taxes. Pay enough already.

Americans are such a spoilt-brat people! Elect a good man President and then expect special effects to transform the whole mess into a utopian paradise. Heaven forbid thet real facts and maturity should take hold in our population!
Mr. Obama, you just keep on keeping on. One suggestion, though:-You really pissed me off with the 'fish and chips' thing. It's something a repugnican would do. You can get better fish and chips right here, or have it flown over overnight and warm it up in the microwave.
    That's all!

Why does everyone in the world blame everything on Bush? What happened in the Market had nothing to do with Bush. It was the greedy banks and lenders that killed the real estate and credit markets.

The next big bubble that will have to burst is the large government that is being shored up with these stimulus packages. They haven't stimulated much–but may end up being the stimulus for an even bigger problem when the government can't pay its bills. What a sad day when the congress and president can't do the right thing with taxpayers' money.

It's a shame that most of these posts are concerned more about blaming either the republican party or the democratic party. The bottom line is that both parties are so similar that Obama is basically just 4 more years of George W's spend spend spend even if we have no money. Wake up america, our dollar may not be worth anything within 10 years. Our only hope........Ron Paul 2012. For those who are unaware of Dr Paul, I suggest you read about his policies. He is our only hope.

Biden says "we mis-read the economy?!" All they had to do is open their eyes and ears, every economist in the Nation was telling them this "spendforless" crap would fail. If the Dems could mis-read something as blatantly obvious as the economy, what does that tell you about health care reform and capntrade?

I see alot of people saying Bush did this and that. One guy says Bush spent 700 bil. So Obamas 800 is ok? I thought this guy campaigned on change. Wasting our money is never ok. The stimulus was a joke. The best was to cut unemployment is to lower the payroll tax. Companies will hire more people. Reagan did it and it worked. And before you say "wait I'm a liberal, I don't agree with anything he did" just remember your man Clinton did the same thing that got the economy in the 90s moving. So socialistic spending and tax during a recession is not the best way to do it. PS before you group me and call me a republican or crazy conservative, I voted for Gore, Bush and McCain and 2 dem senators (Durbin and Nelson) 2 states because I moved.

Frankly, the Democrats should GROW UP!!!

Did any of them HONESTLY BELIEVE the economic crisis would be solves this QUICKLY!!!

And none of them are exactly HELPLESS or BLAMELESS in this crisis.

If they devoted as much time to dealing with and its causes as closely as they protected their own political hides, we wouldn't be in this fix.

They should stop complaining about what hasn't worked and find out what will. That is why they're there in the first place... to look after Americans not themselves.

mr Boehner if your president BUSH had been honest and told the American people that we were in a recession in the beginning maybe Our Potus
OBAMA would have been able to do his job better. I think in all honesty
what we the American people should do is stop listening to any republican and vote all of you out of office. You have no ideas or
plans all you do is criticize and point finger at others people and say no.
As for the Democrates we need to vote in people with ball because none of you have any. You all (democrates) are so afraid of republicans and what they are going to say about you.
Mr President Obama we hired you to do a job. You have our premission to do that job stop waiting on republican approval. The approval you need is the american publics.
    Thank you.

here is the real solution to the economy and government. get rid of all republicans and democrats. vote them out of all offices and vote in your blue collar workers that actually earn a living, pay taxes and are affected by what is going on. the republicans allowed our good jobs to go over seas and the democrats want to spend what we don't have. time for hard working people to take control of our government and create real solutions to the problems that affect 98% of us. vote for independent canidates who work in the real world and can balance their own budget to make ends meet instead of washington raised party members.

It was wrong when BUSH started this and we had to do it TODAY or our economy would be GONE!!! Then we find out all the special pork that was attached (arrows booze solar) Then AIG we had to do this and the AUTO companies. Then OBAMA starts AIG AUTOS BANKS . Then our elected congressman & senators vote on these bills that they don't read add pork to and stick the taxpayers for generations with the bill. I know OBAMA won @53% but no one listens to the taxpayers that don't agree with the administration. Now we unemployment at 10% healthcare which the vast majority are pleased with their plan and don't want to spend trillions to only cover a third and many that are ILLEGAL. Also in this health care bill CONGRESS will keep their plan but force the American citizen to pay more get less so we all can be EQUAL. Do you think that the surgery that Senator Kennedy recieved would be available to you under the OBAMA PLAN??? I hope the53% and others look into these plans see the errors of the GOV'T and demand an accountin and change so we still be the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and not a European or Canadian country. Please take back our country

Its a sure thing that whenever there is an option to post comments on political ticker articles, the thread will be filled with mostly unintelligent drivel from lemmings on the left. If people judged our system of public education by the perspectives offered on these threads, we'd all want it privatized and the country would be moving to the right.

Everything I read here tells me why our economy is failing. Everyone is ready to point fingers and say this person is at fault or that person is at fault. The fact is this country is gluttonous. This whole country is at fault. The president only make policies or signs bills and passes them into law. Then it is the President's responsibility to make sure that the right people are in place to see that the laws are carried out.

The fact is this wasn't Bushes fault or Obama's fault. It started long before they came in office. How this country has a short term memory. The debts go back years and years ago.

And the fact is the people want more and more so they borrow more and spend more. So the whole society is in debt by trillions of dollars.

I will give the President credit for this though. The President is over taxing society as a whole. When I say the President, I mean the President in general. For all the President's have taxed society. Not just Obama. However Obama is not helping any.
