Pelosi: House won't take up Michael Jackson resolution

Pelosi called Jackson "a great, great performer" and acknowledged there is "lots of sadness." But the speaker said at a press conference that while members could express their sympathy on the House floor, she added "I don't think it's necessary" to pass a resolution.

"A resolution, I think, would open up (debate) to contrary views that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different," Pelosi explained.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, who spoke at the memorial service for Jackson on Tuesday in Los Angeles, has introduced HR 600, "Honoring an American legend and musical icon."

The resolution states, "Whereas Michael Jackson was not only an accomplished recording and performing artist, he was a noted humanitarian."

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., criticized the media's extensive coverage of Michael Jackson's death earlier this week, calling Jackson a "pervert," a "pedophile," and "child molester."

I don't think Speaker Pelosi was being disrespectful to Michale Jackson's memory. As her statement mentions, she was only acknowledging that should the resolution come to the floor some very nasty things might be said about Michael Jackson by the likes of representatives such as Peter King. This would have defeated the purpose of honoring Michael Jackson by Congressional resolution. I think she was trying to save his family and fans this grief. It also would only poison the atmosphere of Congress more than already exists there. Also, Congress needs to get on with its main responsibility of passing legislation on affordable health care, climate change, etc.

Well if Pelosi feels that way then I think every Jackson fan out there should make it clear to Pelos and the rest of the Democrats that we will not be supporting them in the future.

Pelosi is a liar. She only did this because of all the criticism the outrageous media attention Mike was receiving........she did this becuae the Republicans spoke out about the massive coverage when our boys and girls are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan........Pelosi only cares about herself and her botox injections....Democrats will not have a majority after 2010.....and Pelosi the liar will be gone.....

    Too little too late Nancy...

It has been two weeks since the passing of Michael Jackson. Despite the fact that he was an excellent performer, it is tme for ALL Americans to move on with their lives and deal with this loss privately. I do not believe we need to have any more tributes. The memorial service was very appropriate and that should be the end to any public statements.

I ask again liberals, where's the cries of racist??? If this were Michael Steele instead of Pelosi, we would hear 'Uncle Tom". If this were a white conservative instead of a white liberal, the term racist would be tossed all over the place! Liberals are not racist???

This is starting to get absolutely ridiculous. The dude was an entertainer, that was all.

If you're really that upset about him dying you need to get your priorities straight.

What is this country coming to?
