Burris not running for a full Senate term

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, announced Friday that he will not run for a full six-year term next year.

"Being a United States senator today requires not only a significant time commitment to performing the job, but almost equal commitment to raising funds to run competitively for the office," he told a crowd of people at the Chicago South Loop Hotel.

"In making this decision I was called to choose between spending my time raising funds or spending my time raising issues for my state," he said.

"I believe that the business of the people of the state of Illinois should always come first."

As Burris emerged to speak, the crowd had greeted him with cheers, urging him to run.

Burris, currently the only African-American U.S. senator, is serving the remaining two years of President Barack Obama's Senate term, but he has never been embraced by his party's leaders in Illinois or Capitol Hill.

He was appointed to the seat in late December by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who had been arrested on federal corruption charges for allegedly trying to sell Obama's seat to the highest bidder.

Democratic leaders had urged Blagojevich not to make an appointment. He disregarded those wishes by naming Burris, a former state attorney general and state comptroller, to the seat.

Blagojevich was impeached and removed from office in January.

Maybe he and soon to be ex-Gov. Palin can team up and do a talk show. They could call it, "How to Profit from Quitting".
Explain how he is quitting. He was appointed to serve teh remaining 2 years of Obama' s term! He will do that. He just won't run for his own 6 year term! That's not quitting Jeff! Aloha!

Perhaps the GOP could run Palin as the Carpetbagger she is, then if she wins she could Quit again and screw taxpayers for 2 pensions upon retirement.

Translation: he is far to tainted with Blagoyavich to ever be a contender when the election rolls around.

I don't like Burris, but at least he was smart enough to smell the coffee and realize he was dragging the Dems in IL down due to his suspect appointment and ethics.

It seems that a lot of GOP governors and congressman (i.e. Sanford, Ensign....) can't even get THAT far! These guys should get a clue and step down if they care at ALL about the GOP.....otherwise they are just more selfish career-oriented heck with the people congressmen we have had enough of.

Burris is a crook, just like the rest of the Chicago political machine. The publicity surrounding his appointment sank any chance of winning the seat in a real election.

BURRIS IS A CROOK TOO, He knew he is just as guilty as the Governor Blagojavich. He knows he doesn't stand a chance in hell of winning and MAY be in jail before his short Senator term is over.

I guess Ann Coulter's right; anytime any subject comes up that shows dems in a negative light, libs don't know how to react, so they slander Palin....
Shows limited mental capacity on their part...got news for you guys, Palin's not the issue here....your corrupt Burris, Blago, Emanuel, and Obama are the issues here....blaming Palin or trying to tie in a comment referencing her just shows that liberals cannot defend any position from the democratic party with any substantiation...

A crowd was urging Burris to "run". Where? As far away from Illinois as possible, I would think!

    Quite a shame.

As a perpetually slobbering lib, I would have voted for Burris in 2010.

After all, we owe it to him as a black guy to elect him to office, no matter how shady he is. As a white lib, I feel regretful that Burris will not be running.

Now if you will excuse me, my "Obama '08 Bib" just arrived in the mail. I gotta go................

Burris should have realized that given the way he got started, with the Dems literally forced to accept him or create another stink on top of the Blago "affair", it would be a miracle to get nominated for 2010. But he really blew it by telling a half-truth and not giving the full answer, that Blago's brother requested the quid pro quo. That sealed his legacy as just another sleazy pol. I think Burris is a better man than that, but ambition got the better of his judgment. On the other hand, both Blagos should rot in hell.

    @Liberal for Obama....
You are an idiot-what does Palin have to do with Burris???-what a lame argument you present-Burris is out because he is corrupt just like ALL who come out of Chicago Politics-

You are obviously a Newbie when it comes to politics-THERE WAS POLITICS before Obama came onto the scene.

You are a typical "NEW" democrat-can't think for yourself-so blame the GOP-Burris is a DEM and just to let you know there are Crooks on both sides of the aisle.

From a former Dem-now an Independent-both sides are NUTS!!!

So IL voters dodged this bullet, but wait til the race baiting starts up again with whoever decides to run. Remember, we have to keep this a "black seat". IL politics must be a tragic joke to the rest of the nation.

Yes: He'll get a Senate pension.
No: This has nothing to do with the "good of the party" or the good of anything.
This guy is a crook and a narcissist of the first order–something very very bad must be out there for him not to run.
But we will never find out what it might be cuz we're in Illinois with its ancient tradition of corruption (except Abe). UGH!
