WASHINGTON (CNN) – Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain has passed an online milestone.
The former Obama rival now has more than a million followers on the microblogging and social networking site Twitter.
In a statement announcing the achievement, McCain said he was "both honored and humbled" to have amassed such a following. "It has been one of the most enjoyable experiences in my long political career – not too bad for an old guy," McCain added.
McCain's increasing use of Twitter marks a major shift from the presidential campaign when he said he "never felt the particular need to e-mail."
Earlier this year, McCain also became the proud owner of new BlackBerry.
In addition to slightly more than a million followers on Twitter, McCain boasts more than half a million supporters on Facebook.
conan said that mccain twitter on his garage door opener...lol
McCain is unstoppable for 2012!!!
He is hip and knows new technologies like no one else.
If he could run again with Palin they could both learn from their 2008 campaign and do a better job this time!!! America believes in second chances.
We would have been much better off with you John. Your age hurt you in many people’s minds but you are truly a great senator!
You put country before self interests maybe Obama could learn from you!
He must have senior citizen following.
Who cares how many followers John McCain has, he would have carried out the same Bush Administration if he would have been elected president. I'm also tired of hearing about Sarah Palin and she would never make a good president, considering the fact that she did not know that Africa is a continent, even our children in schools know that answer. Obama, Obama is doing a fine job and I pray that Sotomayor passes her confirmations with flying high marks and yes she is a wise Latina woman. America needs to grow up and work on the race realtions in this country.
People who are into Twitter need to get a life....and fast...
Riiight, McCain. Keep on telling yourself that America likes you......
It is amazing how Obama is forced to go McCains way or follow Bush policies. I'm laughing every day at the voters who are uneducated but rant anyway.
I'm among the Million but I honestly don't believe McCain is actually updating his tweets. I think it's an aide.
I think most of his folowers are either: (i) awaiting his apology for the abysmally stupid move of putting Palin on the 2008 ticket; or (ii) awaiting a twitter sign from god that Rush will choose Palin for the 2012 [R] candidate. If any of them are awaiting a twitter on a subject of significance from McCain, they will be as old and grumpy as he is before they realize their folly.
Perhaps some are following on Twitter so they can get news from his next hunting trip before it hits the mainstream press: "Oops...I did it again!"
Senator McCain has done more for his country then most of us.
@ donttreadonme who said "You put country before self interests maybe Obama could learn from you!"
He picked Palin. That wasn't putting "Country First."
you keep on twittering you old twit. I didn't vote for McCain. Like Roulette, I always bet on black!
Sarah Palin is a DIM BULB. She had plenty of time to prepare for various interviews while running for VP. I thought she was "acting stupid" in the Katie Couric interview, only to dazzle us later. It was NO ACT! It should be clear to the voters of America, that the Republican party is making a point with Sarah Palin – "See, there truly IS someone LESS informed (aka more stupid) than George Bush!!!! And I did not think it was possible.
Keep up the good work, GOP!
Wow, it's nice to see how tolerant people are when a GOP persona is the focus of an article. I'm waiting for the inevitable tide of "Party of 'No'" and other derogatory remarks to flood this discussion thread.
I see this article as an interesting example of how pervasive social networking is becoming in our daily lives– regardless of which party the networker belongs to.
Apparently Twittering to one's own self must count!
@ k.jones
Because Obama's administration is is wokring out so well for us? You must be one of the millions of idiots who have no idea why they voted for him.
Mcain and palin two TWITS that will never make it!!
@ soulstar.....I hope they do run again. I am sure Letterman, Leno, Maher and every other comedian does. I used to respect him. Palin ruined this guy's name.
This is just toooooo funny for words. LOL
senior citizens with nothing to do ..... jajaaaaa
they sure are united.
Yeah, it's amazing what a room full of republican interns can do – but unfortunately a new study shows that Twitter is not something that most young people but much faith into or continue using for very long. One of the reasons is because you cannot VERIFY who's actually at the other end of a Twitter or a Follower.
Unlike facebook where you can access photos, info and more in depth personal info about someone. how many Facebook fans does the 'Old Man' have I wonder. Not FANS, but personally, on his Facebook page?
I'm guessing it's nowhere near the same number. This is most likely because the number of Twitter followers is bogus. Anyone with an email (real or not) can join, and follow.
GOP = Party of Tolerance
You are absolutely hilarious!
McCain's buddy Lindsey Graham is currently talking to Sotomayor in the most sexist condescending manner you could believe for this decade.
omg, this is some kind of joke for news, right?
