Obama uses his White House e-mail list to praise Sotomayor

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/07/14/art.sotohand0714.gi.jpg caption="In an e-mail sent to supporters Tuesday, President Obama said the public would see 'a sharp and fearless jurist' when Judge Sotomayor takes questions from senators."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - As Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor faced her first day of questioning by the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, President Obama sent a message to supporters asking them to forward an e-mail praising the judge to their individual networks of contacts.

The president praised Sotomayor as having a "brilliant legal mind . . . complemented by the practical lessons that can only be learned by applying the law to real world situations."

"And then there is Judge Sotomayor's incredible personal story," Obama also writes, making reference to Sotomayor's rags-to-robes rise from a South Bronx housing project to the federal appellate courts.

"It takes a certain resilience and determination to rise up out of such circumstances, focus, work hard and achieve the American dream," Obama tells his supporters.

In the message, Obama also seems to promise his supporters that Sotomayor will make a good showing up against what will likely be some tough questioning during the confirmation hearings.

"What members of the Judiciary Committee, and the American people, will see today is a sharp and fearless jurist who does not let powerful interests bully her into breaking from the rule of law."

Obama's e-mail also contains a link to a post on the White House's blog where users can view a video clip of Sotomayor's opening statement delivered Monday afternoon before the Senate Judiciary Committee as well as other information about Obama's nominee.

The e-mail was sent out through the White House e-mail list for supporters who signed up to receive updates from the Obama administration on whitehouse.gov.

In late May, both Obama and Vice President Biden sent out e-mails about Sotomayor to their supporters using the e-mail list of Organizing for America, an organization affiliated with the Democratic National Committee that was set-up to continue the grassroots work of the millions who supported Obama during the presidential campaign.

Judge Sotomayor brings an elegance to the position of jurist. Her real life story isn't a product of affirmative action. It is one of academic achievement and shouldn't be denegraded by political soundbits intended to persuade and strengthen opposition.

She has the experience and has proven herself in all areas of the judicial system

Sotomayor for his first term and if we are stupid enough as a nation to elect him for a second we will see a William Ayers, Ward Churchill, Jeremiah Wright lib type to the court. These libs, including people like Sotomayer/Ginsberg, have no use for the law, they just want to enslave the American public under their hateful liberalism where we no long control our own destiny. Don't be a part of it, vote republican.

What every liberal is failing to mention is that she appointed Judge by the elder Bush. Again the facts hidden by the media , this will only be reported if she fails to be confirmed.

This is how you back up your nominee. Do you honestly think Bush would have done the same thing for Harriet Myers?

I truly wish the Democrat voters would learn from all these rags to riches stories from their party.
We could actually get rid of alot of entitlement programs if everyone would just show a little initiative like Obama and Sotomayor and took personal responsibility for themselves and quit playing the victim.
Oh wait, that could destroy the democrat party as we know it.

His typical community organization skills, thats how he got elected, thats also why the polls he takes are lop sided, most of the Americans that really support this country don't get contacted. I'm sure acorn is tied in as well as the other fringe groups.

I would definitely vite for her. She is indeed brilliant, focused, and determined. The fact the she is from the projects, graduated top of her class, and the one who always follows the law - that is the kind of judge we need. Keep up the good job, judge!!!

Ture...very true. I received one as well, but is this unusual? He is the first President to communicate effectively via email and blog and he uses those methods wisely.

Sorry for your bad feelings "unhappy DEM" I know and anyone with a brain knows you are not a DEM. You can fool a few but not very many. Gotcha!

He praises his nominee while demanding Heathcare reform be pushed thru before July ends. Let's put the President and his family, Pelosi and her family, and all government workers on this wonderful watered down healthcare for a trial period.
If it works well for our "leaders" then push it thru for everyone. Lead by example for a CHANGE we can believe in.

The facts speak for themselves. This brialliant jurist has been overturned by the Supreme Court on more occasions than she has been upheld. If this was a white dude, the nomination would have been withdrawn after the racist decision concerning the New Haven firefighters was overturned.

    BRAVO Sotomayor!!!

I find it hilarious for White men to be talking discrimination. Also, the Seshoms who is the biggest racist ever who called a Black attorney 'boy' is asking her if she is a racist? LOL

Here cases were not overturned by the way....she followed the law given to her.

As a wise old white male, I'd like to offer a suggestion for the future of SCOTUS based on the richness of my experience: Why still only 9 justices? The Constitution allows for more. Let's increase the number to 13 or 15, or even 17 - and add more women and minorities. Let's even throw a muslim in there!! Given the fundraising opportunities afforded to both parties by the circus of the confirmation process, I'm truly surprised this hasn't already occurred. We could give the D's and R's an equal number of nominees and still have an odd number of justices after the process was completed (9+4+4=17). If we can give AIG & GM billions, we can pay for a more "fair & balanced" SCOTUS.

  21. NOT A FAN OF OBAMA AT ALL

The whole problem with the current administration is their policy on affirmative action and their stand on political correctness. This is the whole problem with hiring and firing. We gotr to hire by quota and fire the experienced which is why we have problems.

Training cost money and retraining cost more.

Affirmative Action and Political Correctness is destroying the work sector.

@ Hugo, who asked "If she has such a brilliant legal mind why were half over her cases overturned? "

Ummmmm...check your facts there buddy...she has rendered thousands of opinions in her 17 years on the bench as a circuit judge and then as an appellate judge. Something like 8 of them have been heard on appeal and the SCOTUS doesn't generally bother with appeals unless they either present an issue of first impression (if you don't know what that is, then look it up while checking your facts) or have sufficient merit in the first place to be bothered. That 6 of 8 or whatever it is have been overturned...some by extremely close margins, like the New Haven case (5 to 4), is no suprise and does not reflect ill on her skill as a judge.
