WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama will meet this week with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the Cambridge, Massachusetts, police officer who arrested him for disorderly conduct, James Crowley, the White House said Monday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs did not say which day the three men will get together at the White House.

UPDATE: The White House has revealed what beer will be served at the much-anticipated meeting later this week: Bud for the president and Blue Moon for Crowley. The Boston Globe reports Gates likes Red Stripe and Beck's.

–CNN White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux contributed to this report.

What an amazingly civilized way to resolve a disagreement.

And here I thought we were just supposed to shout political insults at each other.

Now if Obama can find a way to un-invite the cop, invite Bill Ayers and Jeramiah Wright, it will be old home week at the White House.

The police officer should decline the invitation until Oblame-ya apologizes. The racist professor should be ousted from Harvard.

If Prof. Gates is so smart in Black Studies, perhaps he can review history & note the volunteers who fought in the Civil War.You Tube has photos & films of these gentlemen in their later years, wearing the numerous medals that they won, attending veteran's reunions, proudly displaying the flag that they fought for.Their descendants are shown on videos continuing the tradition to this day. Some rode with the 6th Tennessee Cavalry, the North Carolina,Louisiana ,& Texas Regiments among others. Most,if not all, were not drafted or impressed but, joined of their own free will. Prof. Gates will either not discuss or will gloss over this little known piece of American history. Why? Because the Civil War veterans that I'm talking about were the BLACK Veterans who joined & fought for the CONFEDERACY! These gentlemen are probably spinning in their graves due to persons such as Prof. Gates.

Who cares! I forgot about this incident about 5 minutes after I heard about it. Obama has more important thing to be worrying about than wasting his time playing referee to these two.

As the crazies in Washington waste billions of the US tax-payer's dollars (each month) driving the country deeper into bankruptcy by the continued support of 132,000 US troops in Iraq and more in Afghanistan, the President of the United States of America is wasting time having a beer with his buddy because he got his feelings hurt?

    Do your job Obama!

I think that the apology should come from the professor. His actions provoked the controversy, not racial profiling.

Isn't it funny how people like to point out that the President spoke before he had all the facts. He HAD all the facts that mattered. The professor was arrested for having the nerve to offend a cop while in his house – no physical violence, no threats, just a loud mouth! I thought this was the USA, NOT IRAN!!

This is ridiculous. Millions of people dream of being recognized by visiting the White House through hard work, dedication, community or military service, etc. Along comes this guy who gets arrested for disorderly conduct, behaves like the worst kind of racist (not excusable for someone who is undeducated, but absolutely apalling for a college profesor who teaches about race tolerance!), and fails to admit he did anything wrong. Instead of spending the night in the slammer, he gets rewarded by visiting with the president, taking precedence over thousands or people more deserving. Shame on Prof. Gates for his attitude. Shame on President Obama for rewarding this type of behavior.

Looks like the Republicans have left their own blogs (preaching to the choir) and joined the CNN liberal blogs.

If you folks don't like Obama, PLEASE don't accept any monies that might come your way as the result of his policies (such as stimulus). I know alot of seniors who actually cashed their recent social security check while bad-mouthing the prez.

It is nice to have a president who can speak English and form complete sentences. And who talks to us (his bosses) regularly about what is going on with his job.

Once again I want to emphasize. The police force of a city is part of the executive branch of the government. That means the mayor of the city is in charge of the police force. There are tapes of the radio transmissions that Officer Crowley made during this incident. These tapes reportedly show that the Professor was out of control.

These tapes have not been released to the public by the mayor of Cambridge.

The mayor of Cambridge is black.

    Draw your own conclusions.

Why do Obama need to apologize for the statement that it was stupid for the man to get arrested in his own house? In other words stupidy wasn't for the Officer it was for the way that the situation arose out of hand. Remember this is an Officer who trains other Officers to not let race get in the way of their work , so tell me this, How did it work for him and not for others? It suppose to be follow the leader or do as I teach and not as I do.

I agree with what Ms. Eisenhower said earlier this week. This nation is beginning to divide and I only blame the right wing conspiracy theorists for that. People like Boss Limbaugh incite hatred into the minds of these fanatic right wing nutjobs.

If I was that Cambridge cop, I would have told Obama where to stick his "stupid" invitation. Use someone else as your photo op, jerk.

Obama has lost another 20% of the population's support with this one. But his mentor, Reverend Wright, must be very proud somewhere of his protege.

The reporter at the Chicago Sun Times knew EXACTLY what she was doing when she asked the question...starting a firestorm on race. Being stupid and "acting stupidly" are two different things, but ignorance knows not the difference.

I once told a black friend of mine that if she could be a fly on the wall to hear what whites say about minorities, especially blacks and latinos, she'd be sick to her stomach. She shrugged and said "what else is new?" "We know the deal."

I'm sad for this country. We have far TOO many people who just can't get past something as innocuous as SKIN COLOR, even in 2009.

We've come really far on race relations in this country.....well, as long as the President isn't black, I guess.

Wow there's some ignorant people posting here, who are always eagerly awaiting with baited breath to make a mountain out of any molehills they find, people who are desperate to find a way to make black people sound bad.

Crowley probably wasn't and isn't a racist, but you glorified klansmen certainly are.

****(The REAL question to ask is. WHY did the police **(DROP)** the CHARGES?

The only 2 reason the COPS drop charges are. Either the cops did NOT have a good enough case or good enough evidence to win the case. Or the COPS made a MISTAKE with the arrest and decided to DROPPED the case.

The COPS **(DID)** DROP the LOUIS GATES case. And for whatever reason the police DROPPED the LOUIS GATES case, makes the cops look **(GUILTY)**! But people don't bring this up. Gee, I wonder why?)****

Obama spoke with no facts of the case other then Gates being arrest by a white cop. The cop was doing his job responding to a call of a possible home invasion and instead of Gates being grateful that the cop had arrived in a timely manner and cooperating with him he yells and curses at him. And i agree with Steph grown ups yell and curse at a police officer for doing his job amd insult the persons family too bad no one can blame the republicans for this. The cop did his job the professor and the president were the ones acting stupidly!

    Mr. President,
Unless you are about to intervene on every single incident that occurs here in America, please let this fade away and make it a non issue!

You are the President of the U.S., you are making a mockery out of your position.

I admire all three of the players who seem to be three of the few who are treating this as adults. Obviously all three reacted emotionally on issues that have plagued America for years; people can continue to point blame like children do or they can sit down and hash out their differences in an adult fashion.

Kudos to all three of them for putting egos aside and setting an example for how conflicts are resolved in the adult world.

When is CNN going to apologize for its continued shoddy reporting by stating that the woman who called 911 identified Professor Gates and the other man accompanying him as "black" when in fact she did NOT identify the race of the two men?
