Obama's Cabinet claims $243 million in federal savings

President Obama challenged his Cabinet in April to find $100 million in savings in 90 days.

President Obama challenged his Cabinet in April to find $100 million in savings in 90 days.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A challenge that President Obama made to his Cabinet in April resulted in cost-cutting measures that more than doubled the original $100 million target, his administration said Monday.

At his first Cabinet meeting, Obama asked Cabinet members to find $100 million in savings in 90 days. The deadline passed last week with no announcement, and the White House responded to reporters that information was being compiled.

The Office of Management and Budget announced the results Monday, saying Cabinet members identified $243 million in savings through the end of next year.

The Defense Department had the bulk of the big-ticket items. Replacing the standard jet fuel used by the military with commercial jet fuel was expected to save the Air Force more than $51 million, the report said. Increasing the number of soldiers per chartered aircraft going on leave was estimated to save the Army more than $33 million, it said.

The Department of Homeland Security was expected to save $47,000 by consolidating subscriptions to professional publications and newspapers, while the media relations office at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was expected to save $2,000 by using electronic copies of daily newspaper clippings instead of hard copies.

"These savings reflect the president's belief that even small savings can add up," Budget Director Peter Orszag said in a message on the OMB Web site.

Orszag added that the White House would continue to work with federal agencies "to identify further savings as part of the 2011 budget process," with hopes that such steps "will start to instill a culture of cost-savings and care when it comes to using taxpayer dollars."

This is one more area where President Obama is making Bush look like an idiot. This man knows how to run a country. I can't be any prouder to be an American. Thank you Mr. President.

White House shoots down birthers...wish the media would. Giving any credence whatsoever to such abject nonsense is a disservice to the American public and you know it CNN.

As for the savings...to be expected...he said he would. The GOPers will beat their chests about it like chimps in the throws of a mating display trying to woo their base, but that's to be expected too....they've been thump thump thumpin' like that for nigh on a year now.

Fiscal responsibility. Big deal I like the old days where our Presidents (W & Gipper) would simply talk about conservative spending & values while running up record debt, uncontrolled spending & letting the super rich loot & pillage the country. Now those were the days of true OLD FASHION VALUES!!!!!!

Obummer has spent more than that on luxury vacations for himself and his family since he's been there, they haven't saved anything.

This just goes to show you that healthcare reform can be paid for. $250 million dollars in government waste that can be going towards flipping the bill for reform.

Is that REAL money or just more funny money? In other words, will there actually be an impact on reducing the piles of debt that the Obamanation adores?

    243 million?

That's like a penny compared to the spending going on.

How can you claim savings when your spending 7 million dollars to study cow farts?

There is no end to the lies this egomaniac will make up.

OOOOHHH!! Shout joyous amens from on high! The cabinet cut 243 million dollars! Well, it would be a big amount if it weren't for the TRILLIONS of dollars Obama is still wasting. But hey, it's not his money.

This president, and the Democrats ruining...I mean running Congress (although ruining is more fitting) are ahowing everyone just how low opinion numbers can go. At this pace, by 2012 Obama will be in the negatives.

Although it is humorous to watch libs shoot themselves in the feet; showing that they should NEVER AGAIN be allowed to be in charge of anything.

Our president is doing a great job. He was left with a huge mess and is doing all he can to fix it. So, all you naysayers and talking heads either help him or shut up! We're sick of all the negative nasty lies and innuendo from the republican party and the conservative media.

Stated another way, it would be like a family making $50,000 per year deciding not to spend $ 6.08 – basically Obama is skipping a Latte.

Well, I'm sure the crazy retugs can find something wrong with this...may I make a suggestion for your criticism of these cost saving measures...making the department of homeland security consolidate subscriptions is unpatriotic???

I'm so glad we have a president with the common sense that most of us have. We all do these types of things every day, and little changes do add up to big savings.

It is a beginning, now to find a way to cut three trillion dollars? The very few taxpayers who still have jobs are still paying more than 50% of their earnings in over all taxes each year. The only way to have true tax reduction is with reduced Government spending. This is only a little less than 1/4 of a billion dollars; it will not reduce the taxpayer's burden.

Here is another $5 million. Get rid of the 30 plus Czars Obama has appointed who seem to have the power to dictate our lives but do not answer to the voters or Congress. They are also managing tasks that are normally given to members of the Cabinet who are accountable to voters and Congress. These czars make between $158,000 to $172,200 each.
