WASHINGTON (CNN) - Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said Friday he would not appoint himself to fill the remaining time left in Sen. Mel Martinez's, R-Florida, Senate term.

Crist, who is running for Martinez's seat, would not speculate on who he might appoint to fill the remaining term, but the governor also noted that "there is not a long list of candidates" for the position.

"This is a very serious thing and I recognize that," Crist told reporters at a briefing in Florida.

"There is not a short list," he said. "There is not a long list, but I am getting a lot of calls and recommendations and volunteers."

Crist told reporters that Martinez informed him of his decision yesterday.

He also said the governor's office will likely have "an application process, a questionnaire, an appropriate vetting" before appointing a replacement.

"I'm confident we will be able to reach a decision in the next few weeks before the senate goes back into session," he said.

Earlier Friday, Martinez announced publicly that he was resigning his seat. Late last year, Martinez said he would not seek a second term in the Senate.

Why is it that if you don't agree with Dems, you're automatically wrong and against the country? Why is it that the majority of our soldiers are Republicans? Why is it that poll after poll shows Republicans give more to charities than Democrats? Why do they call Liberal activism progressive or grassroot, and Repulican activism hate speech or planted brown shirts? Why don't Democrats admit that without all of their congress and senate votes except for 21, Iraq wouldn't have happened? Why can't Dems admit they've been in charge of the economy for almost 3 years now? When will the party of tolerence and debate become just that? Why is a minority conservative considered an outcast? Why do Democrats and Liberals spew such hate and call names on all of these boards. Why is racism and anti-christian remarks part of the liberal talking points? Can one of you Liberals explain all of this to me?
