Dean on Palin’s health care claims: ‘She made that up’

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told CNN Sunday that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had deliberately made up charges that the Obama administration’s health care bill would lead to euthanasia.

“About euthanasia, they're just totally erroneous. She just made that up,” he said. “Just like the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ that she supposedly didn't support.

“There's nothing like euthanasia in the bill. I practiced medicine for a long time, and of course you have to have end of life discussions - the patients want that. There's nothing... euthanasia's not in this bill.”

Dean was referring comments Palin made late Friday in a post on her Facebook page. In her post, the former Republican vice presidential candidate said President Obama’s health care plan would create a “death panel” that would weigh whether her parents or son Trig were “worthy of health care.”

She discounted the administration’s view that the president’s plan would cut health care costs, saying the only path to lower costs was less treatment.

"And who will suffer the most when they ration care?" she wrote. "The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."

Palin has mostly steered clear of interviews with reporters since leaving office last month. "Democracy depends on you. That is why our troops are willing to die for you," she told the media in her farewell speech. "So how about in honor of the American soldier, ya quit making things up?" She spent several days last week in New York, meeting with her book publisher.

I'm so sick of this. People are getting crazy. We just want to help people who can't get affordable healthcare, or are excluded because of pre-existing conditions. Haven't you had enough of the control these insurance companies have on YOUR HEALTH? How you employer HOLDS YOUR PHYSICAL WELL BEING in their hands????? Come one people! No one's going to take your private health care options away. There will be another OPTION for you IF YOU WANT IT. No one's telling you what to do. Just give people a public option.
This is crazy. Can't you see insurance companies, healthcare providers, drug companies all want to keep control and make tons of $$$$$$$$$$ OFF OF YOU and your WELL BEING?
So done with this. Fine, don't help the less fortunate people out there. Fine. Bet you consider yourselves CHRISTIANS too, huh???

Liberals/democracts seem to refuse to see or believe the obvious even when it affects them. Instead of addressing issues, they they attach the person. Grow up dems. You are truly pathetic. You refuse to question anything. You accept all from your Masters as the truth, and keep trying to pick fights with conservatives/repubs over personalities instead of debating issues. When are you going to wake up to the fact that ALL of the politicians in Washington are liars and are not representing us the voters, including you. Where is your anger that you no longer have a voice in what happens to you? As far as town hakll meeting being orchestrated, bull s..... We are angry and telling the politicians WE DO NOT TRUST YOU.

what we have now would greatly encourage euthanasia

When I lost my job I was in the line at the county ER BenTaub for 6 hours

    level 10 pain

I thought about the scene from "Soylent Green" where Edward G. Robinson is put to sleep at his own request.

A big beautiful room and beautiful attendants wre furnished.

The attendants gave him a liquid to drink with beautiful music..

I though about another line to a dumpster where people take a potion and climb in the dumpster.

Now THIS is the "plan" that would describe the GOP and Cheney.

Forget all the useless poor homeless people with no hope.

If anything describes the GOP, this is it.!!!

This is being presented as a he-said-she-said, when in fact Palin's allegations are demonstrably false. Under the bill, the government will not make healthcare decisions for participants. That claim is debunked on the Politifact website under "our latest guide to the health care distortions." The claim related to euthanasia or allowing people to die is also debunked. Palin is lying.

    sad american,

that's great Illegals go to doctors offices instead of the ER so that will save money you're right. But exactly WHY are we covering those that don't pay into the system better than those of us that do??

Oh and is there some new increase in doctors in the US that i haven't heard about? Medical school rolls going up becasuse all i hear is there are LESS doctors.

So wait, its already hard to get a doctor's appointment now although not impossible.

When we add 50 million to that system without adding doctors to the system, sure the ER's will be slower and it'll lower costs but what about the wait times?

If a wait time for an internal medicine doctor is now say a week on average won't it ballon to 2 or 3 by adding all the illegals in there?

that's the problem with liberals. they only think one step in front of themselves and not to the reprocussions much further down the line.

Palin whines about comedians making jokes about her family, but she doesn't miss an opportunity to exploit them for her own twisted agenda. She's the lowest of political bottom feeders.

Why should we have to pay for people, old people, who want millions is health care to eke the last breath and heart beats from worn out bodies?

That's harsh, but the truth. Sara Palin, when she found out she was going to have a defective child, could have taken steps to insure she had a healthy one, whom the rest of the country won't have had to care for.

As I've said before, she wouldn't be where she is if she had buck teeth and a bad case of acme. Sarah "dumb-dumb" Palin can't read, doesn't understand what she reads, or she lies.

I know all conservatives are not stupid, easily led, and highly reactionary – but as usual in "comments" sections here and elsewhere, it's hard finding a conservative "family values" Republican diatribe free of spelling and grammatical errors. What a mob.

Thing is, insurance companies are already making decisions like that. You don't have to dig too far online to find tales of people whose treatments for things like cancer have been denied by their insurers, and who died while waiting for their appeals to be heard. It's been going on for years. Why are the Repubs not shocked about that?

audio support - Please look up the definition of euthanasia, then you will understand why we say Palin was talking about euthanasia. she probably didn't use the exact word for it because she didn't know how to pronounce it. Don't cha know!

to Welches, Oregon.....are you serious! Talk about digging deep to sling it.... The "Christians" are not and I repeat, not after Obama because of race....we do not like the direction he is taking the country and we would feel that way if he was red, yellow or white. While there may be a minority of people who go for the race card... I assure you the majority are not calling or playing that. We are allowed to voice our concerns against his ideas, plans, or direction if we don't agree. This IS America, the land of the free...everyone can voice their opinion..looked you were able to ramble on here and no one stopped your nonsense.

I am truly disappointed in Ms. Palin. She has shown herself to be a follower, liar, and a promoter of racism. She's the operator of the bandwagon called stupidity. Unbelievable that an individual who wants to become President of our United States could be so divisive and loony at the same time. Please Ms. Palin put the shut to the up!. You are too ignorant to lead an ant!

I am sick of all to lies and promotion of racism. To RUSH, PALIN, BECK, HANNITY, LOU DOBBS, BOHEMER, O'RIELLY, AND STEELE ( Michael you are just a token as well as Jindal when will you two get it!) , All of you are advocating violence and the spreading of lies just to regain power. The Power is the people!

You nut jobs are doing Nothing to help the Americans . And America, you are showing your true racist and ignorant colors to the world. We are suppose to showing the world how to value each other and live in equality.

America, Read people, read for yourselves. Make your own decisions. Stop letting others lead you around like animals and do your thinking for you. I sure you have an IQ above 2!

Our President is doing all he can to bring about the change he promised during his campaign. We must support him with our intelligence and logic and ideals. That's what we promised him when we elected him! Its not about black or white! Its about helping Americans get the health care they need and putting America back on track..

Two irrelevant failed politico's throwing crap at each other. Typical of politics in American today. How sad that CNN would even bother to give these two a forum.
Dr. Dean stands to gain a tremendous windfall if the Government starts to pay for medical care. No more checks and balances. Even tho the INsurance companies are greedy profit mongers, at least they keep Some of the bit time health care corporate giants in check.
Palin is irrelevant and o so wrong but then again Dean is also irrelevant and o so wrong.
We do NOT need a government run beaurocracy to further screw up the "health care system" (What is that by the way ?

There really isn't anything in the bill about a "death panel". Palin is just scaremongering as usual. What is in the bill is money for families to visit an adviser who will tell them about different health care options, for example hospice and other end of life services. Hospice care, not death panels and euthanasia.

By the way, I saw someone called Palin "Dick Cheney in a dress" in an earlier comment. That image is somehow both hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

One last thing. Those of you who claim CNN is not allowing republicans to post; how were you able to post? Also, perhaps CNN isn't censoring you, maybe more people just think Palin is a bozo than not. I'm not saying anything bad about her family, her religion, or her baby; I just think she is an idiot. And CNN isn't left wing. They have Lou Dobbs, and had Glenn Beck until he left for Fox.

Ms. Palin needs to be asked who provides her family's health insurance since the ex-First Dude is a native. Could be the State of Alaska.

Why have poor Trig be subjected to the government's proposed "death panels" when PRIVATE health care companies already do this so well!?

Oh Sarah, you're so smart. Oh, wait, you're actually single-handedly making this country dumber every time we have to read about anything you ever say...ever. Literally every word that emanates from your torpid brain makes this country dumber for having heard it.

You sadden Jesus. Jesus would DEFINITELY be for defending private health care companies and continuing to leave 40 million+ americans without health care. Especially in the richest country in the world. Jesus definitely NEVER talked about helping the sick, the tired, the poor. In my bible, I have him always defecating directly on top of homeless people's heads.

For dumb right-wing nut jobs seemingly unable to pick up on thick sarcasm...that was a sarcastic comment. Jesus is currently ashamed to be associated with Sarah Palin. He doesn't like to "pal around" with heartless wenches.

Ms. Palin – is almost always misinformed and ALWAYS inappropriate. Certainly she must have known prior to writing down that claim that it was extreme and bizarre in nature? This latest claim on her part poses a remarkable threat to her credibility or her being taken seriously in discourse. It is time she realizes that there is a difference between sensationalism and substance.

What Dean also said is that a public option will not result in a single payer system. Also that "anyone who likes their present insurance can keep it". The propose new plan states that an employer would have to pay an 8% penalty if they don't provide healthcare. Does anyone disagree that the current cost of healthcare is much more than 8% of a person's salary? What will prevent all the employers from sending their folks to the "public plan"... additionally, who do you think makes more money/benefits, a clerk working at Blue Cross or a SEIU employee working for the government??
Please address the 8% option which will force a single payer system.

As I read the headline, I think of all the people on this site who routinely ask CNN to stop printing stories about Sarah Palin, and ask why CNN writes about her. They continue to write about her because she remains relevant, and a factor in conservative circles, like it or not. So using the anti-Palin logic, has anyone asked CNN why they wrote a story on Dr. Dean? He's no longer a factor, even to the extreme leftists who now dominate the democratic party, and he is utterly irrelevant to this debate. Maybe owner and CEO of the democratic party, George Soros, can find a job for him.
