The prison in Standish, Michigan, is slated for closure but would stay open if Guantanamo detainees are sent there.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Federal officials will travel to Standish, Michigan, on Thursday to tour a state prison that could be used to house terror suspects detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, U.S. government officials said Wednesday.

Among those who will check out the facility, the officials said, will be representatives from the departments of Defense and Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Prisons.

One administration official stressed no decision has been made about where to relocate Guantanamo detainees. Multiple options are under consideration. That official added Thursday's visit is simply to gather information about the prison.

Everyone knows that we don’t have enough prisoners to take care of in this great country!

Lets just release them and then on the way out shoot them as enemy combatants. This would save taxpayers money.

GITMO should be a privately owned and operated business. It's not fair that it's government run, the private sector can't compete with it. It would be so much better if they were making a profit from detaining the terrorists.

The only reason they were sent to Gitmo was so that Bush could circumvent the Constitution of the United States. It is time we again became a nation of laws that we all follow.

The only reasons the detainees are seen as boogie men are their skin color and their religion. We have hundreds of home grown terror cells whose members are White and Christian. Nobody seems to be losing sleep over them. And yes, Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist. Stop saying otherwise!

If people of this town in Michigan wants to bring the terrorist suspects to their prison because it will give them jobs for a very long time, I say let them have em.

Try them already. Then either lock 'em up and throw away the key or set them right back where they were found. And those of you who are too scared to house them in the U.S., come on, if there's one thing we have to be proud of it's our ability to lock people up. We do, after all, have the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world. Iran and China got nothing on us. Have a nice day!

You could send them to Wyoming where Cheney hangs out....I see no problem with this. All you that are screaming "fowl" sorry – your guys (gal) lost – Obama is U.S. President voted in by the majority of voters and he should be working for us – ya'll had your turn....and if you keep up the nasty noise it may be a long long time before you get to come out in the playground again – so take a chill pill and stop the lies and bigotry (ha – like that will happen in my life time! – at least we were able to get a President into the White House who has a clue!!) like in an old song still near and dear to my heart "THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN" –" hurts don't it!!

Why don't we just regress a couple hundred years and send them all to an isolated island... out of site, out of mind... let them terrorize each other.

Seriously... anyone who posted that we should leave them in Gitmo forever because they are prisoners of war needs to read a history book. If the whole world used that theory, John McCain would still be in a prison camp in Vietnam.

I do like the idea of Hardin, MT (I grew up in North Central MT). It is isolated and broke, they could use the boost to the economy... and if there were any escapes... I guarantee the locals would take care of the problem before the U.S. Marshals could even formulate a plan.

I want just one reason from our caring right wingers as to why our prisons are certainly good enough to keep the most heinous criminals in American behind bars, yet aren't secure enough to house a few guys from the middle east? Give me a reason. Seriously. What is the difference? You KNOW they aren't going to get out. So what is the big deal? Come on right wingers. Show me what I have to fear besides fear itself.

What about terrorists who are sons of the soil with Europoean heritage who calmly walk into a public place and decide to eliminate anything that walks, crawls and breathes EN MASSE because his girlfriend jilted him or his boss gave him a pink slip?

It is nice that they are considering Michigan for Gitmo Detaines knowing that Michigan has the highest Muslim population of the country. It sure would be easy for possible terrorists/extremists to blend in with the population while figuring out a way to break there partners out.

    Just something to think about.

The American people have forgotten 9/11, they've forgotten those people at Twin Towers jumped unto their death. Now these people are on the side of terrorists who killed their fellow citizens. 9/11 could have been averted IF Bill Clinton have done something to stop Al Qeada when it attacked the Twin Tower in 1993. Denial of the FACT these jihadist are all after killing people of this country borders on insanity and ignorance. Since the taking over of hostages in the 70's (Iran hostage) during the time of Carter, extremist groups have been targetting US citizens here and abroad. Be grateful GWB was the President when 9/11 took place, he took an immediate action to defend this country, he did not wimp out like Clinton when Twin Tower was attacked in 1993 and attack of USS Cole in Yemen. Bush was not a perfect President, but under his leadership this country was SAFE.

No prisoner has EVER escapred a Fed Supermax facility. We held mass-murderer and home-grown terrorist Timothy McVeigh in one, and that was fine for him. We have the blind sheikh and others in them.
Criminals should be proven criminals and thrown into jail. The facility at Guantanamo was an attempt to avoid law and has only brought shame and disrepute on our fine country. Why do republicans fear the law and hate America?
