HCAN targets Snowe, Collins ahead of Obama speech

As President Obama prepares to deliver his health care message to the American people Wednesday night, the umbrella group Health Care for America Now and union allies launched a weeklong media and grassroots campaign in Maine to pressure the state's GOP senators to back a public health insurance option.

Sen. Olympia Snowe has been in quiet talks with the White House about a  "trigger" option, which would threaten the insurance industry with a new public health insurance plan in several years if it did not meet certain coverage standards.

The new $280,000 campaign aimed at Snowe and fellow Republican Sen. Susan Collins will include radio, print and television advertising in the state through Saturday, along with mailers and an online petition calling on Snowe to "stand up to the insurance company lobbyists."

In one of the 30-second television ads, "Insured," a cancer survivor relates her fear of losing health insurance if she changes jobs.

"We have to have reform that allows people to keep their health insurance if they like it but that forces the insurance companies to behave themselves," says Maine resident Lee Roberts. "We need Senator Snowe to continue her independence and show us that she cares more about the people of Maine than the insurance lobby."

In "Maine Small Business," a small business owner argues that the proposed overhaul would help his business become more competitive.

The groups said Tuesday they have also sent letters to President Obama, Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus emphasizing the need to "regain momentum" and move forward on the bill within the next week.

In recent times, the insurance industry has had plenty of times to do something positive about the health care they offer the public. They promised President Carter they would, but they did not. When President Reagan came into office the insurance felt no pressure to do anything. The same thing followed with the two Bushes Presidency. They were successful in defeating President Clinton, but not this time. We want the whole hog which is the public option.

Snowe and Collins probably will ignore the campaign - they are pretty popular in Maine. They do what they think is best and don't seem to pay any attention to propaganda. I wish my Senators were like that.

I'm not saying I agree with every vote they make, but they actually think before they vote.

I have a great idea. Let's let the DEMOCRATS have a single payer govt run HC solely paid for by a tax increase on DEMOCRATS.

Yeah, you want a single HC system when someone else is paying for it.

No more taxes, no coverage for illegals, no to GOVT run HC. Period.
Try that on for size DUMocrats

I have listened to Senator Snow Town Hall's and the senator is
    NOT for a public option.
She seems to have a clear understanding that there is no reason to
tear down health to accomplish controlling cost and availability.

Do not allow Snowe and Collins to make any more changes.....They did enough damage in the stimulus compromise......If they won't get with the program move around them.....Nothing personal...I admire and respect them both....But what's A & R got to do with it? Let's get a real bill passed.....

Wake up fellow Americans! Our politicians are nothing more than purchased lackeys for big business. Nothing will get done on health care until the system goes belly-up and is in total fiscal ruin.

Want to change this? Only vote for third party candidates and totally repudiate the two party system which is now obviously totally corrupt. Our partisan government is useless!
